Chapter 10: The Plight of the Elves

The Lord of Mayin City was rejected by Yan Luo, but showed no sign of anger. Instead, he became more interested in Yan Luo.

"Why?"

Yan Luo replied, "Because I don't have feelings for you. Although your appearance strikes my fetishes straight from every aspect, and if I were really to bed you, I could be entangled with you for over ten hours without feeling tired. The problem is, there's no emotion between us. I'm not interested in intercourse that only stems from carnal desire!"

Julia, who was next to them, was dumbfounded upon hearing this.

Too, too blunt, right?

Even though she was already aware that Yan Luo was a straightforward person, Julia couldn't help but fall into a daze hearing these words from his mouth.

The three truck drivers, overhearing, couldn't help but whisper to each other.

Who would've thought, Yan Luo is actually quite pure...

The Lord of Mayin City, hearing Yan Luo's words, was also momentarily stunned, and looked at Yan Luo with even more excitement.

"You human, truly delight me!"

Yan Luo said emotionlessly, "Private matters can be discussed later. The most important thing now is to discuss how much of our goods you plan to purchase, and get the statistics ready as soon as possible."

"Indeed, those matters can be discussed privately later."

The Lord of Mayin City smiled and invited Yan Luo and his group into the Lord's Mansion.

Yan Luo instructed the truck drivers to park the trucks on a nearby vacant lot and then entered the Lord's Mansion with them.

This was Yan Luo's first time entering the Lord's Mansion of an Elf City. The architectural style of the Lord's Mansion in Mayin City differed from Gass City. It featured many archways, the corridors were mostly semi-open, and the door frames of the rooms weren't straight but had some curves.

Led by an employee of the Lord's Mansion, Yan Luo and his group were taken to a room specifically for entertaining guests.

Inside the room, there was only a low table, with several mats spread around it.

Yan Luo sat cross-legged on one of the mats, looking at the Lord of Mayin City opposite him and immediately brought up the issue of purchasing goods.

Although the Lord of Mayin City was very interested in Yan Luo, business was still business. She couldn't offer Yan Luo a discount on such matters.

Similar to the conditions offered by Gass City, the items Mayin City could use to trade for human goods were mainly magic tools and demon materials.

Mayin City, surrounded by scarce resources, could not offer much in exchange for Yan Luo's goods.

Hence, she proposed, "If I send a few elf artisans to your world to help craft things for you, how much of your goods could be exchanged for that?"

Yan Luo frowned, "We don't engage in human trafficking!"

Moreover, having elves appear in the human world would cause a lot of trouble, which Yan Luo didn't want to happen.

In modern society, some people even go as far as cosmetic surgery to transform into beastmen or beasts, let alone elves.

The issue is that these elves they take back are genuine elves, not humans who have been sculpted to look like elves.

"It's not human trafficking," the Lord of Mayin City said with a smile. "We wouldn't sell our own kind. It's merely mutual learning—I hope to have a few elf artisans go to your world to help you craft magic tools while also learning something from your world. Anyway, elves have long lifespans, so going to your world for a decade or so means nothing to us."

The three truck drivers, hearing the Lord of Mayin's words, were taken aback.

It was only at this point they realized that the elves are a race with long lifespans, and a decade to them is nothing more than a short trip.

Yan Luo fell silent, his mind racing as he considered the Mayin Lord's proposal.

Is allowing elf artisans to travel to Blue Star a good or bad thing?

If he didn't assist in opening the gateway, those elves couldn't return, which means he could sever the connection between the elf artisans and the Elf Race.

If the elf artisans asked him to bring back messages, he could find ways to inspect them and ensure there would be no leaks.

…No, it's not feasible!

The current Blue Star is too weak. If the elves found out that there isn't a Sequence One powerhouse on Blue Star, they might get some ideas about it.

Thinking of this, Yan Luo looked at the Lord of Mayin City and said seriously, "I refuse!"

"That's a real shame," the Lord of Mayin City sighed.

She then had an employee of the Lord's Mansion tally up how much they had to exchange with humans.

Mayin City, unlike Gass City, wasn't resource-rich, but they didn't need to leave the city to have demons bring them resources. Therefore, the wealth accumulated by this city wasn't insignificant.

The Lord of Mayin City offered Yan Luo and his team some pastries while they waited for the statistical results.

At this point, the Lord of Mayin City brought up the topic of 'having children' with Yan Luo.

Elves are a sparsely populated race. Although each elf can have five or six children in their lifetime, there are some elves who never reproduce at all.

Coupled with elves who die from various accidents, the actual population growth rate of elves nearly matches the mortality rate.

The Lord of Mayin City is an anomaly among elves. She has had more than twenty children so far, but none of them have inherited her interest, as none of them wanted to have children with an elf they just met that interested them.

She believes the reproductive situation of the Elf Race must be improved, as the current elves lack risk resistance capabilities.

In the event of a disaster causing a large number of elf deaths, their population would be hard to recover.

"I envy you humans,"

said the Lord of Mayin City to Yan Luo and the humans with him, "You are among the few species that receive positive feedback from reproduction, which is why you can maintain such large numbers, and have strong risk resistance capabilities. Even after experiencing multiple disasters that could have wiped out other races, you still survived and managed to recover to your original numbers in an incredibly short amount of time."

Yan Luo felt that what the Lord of Mayin considered 'incredibly short' was perceived from the perspective of elves. For elves, even a decade is like merely a long trip, so the 'incredibly short time' they acknowledge might actually be hundreds of years.

"I want to change the situation, so I took it upon myself, hence I've had twenty-two children who grew up healthy," the Lord of Mayin City expressed her thoughts to Yan Luo.

Yan Luo was not interested in having children with the Lord of Mayin, but he was intrigued by her motivation for doing so.

"Can you receive positive feedback from reproduction?" Yan Luo asked with interest.

The Lord of Mayin looked at Yan Luo with a somewhat complex expression, as it was the first time she had met someone who asked such a question so straightforwardly.

After taking a gentle breath, the Lord of Mayin said, "In fact, elves can also receive positive feedback from this act, it's just that our sense of it comes slower. Therefore, most of the time, we don't get any positive feedback, and having children is simply an obligation of being elves. Since we have come into this world, we should assume some responsibility for our race."

"As for me, I've never found joy in having offspring. Mating is just repetitive movement, sometimes accompanied by pain, while childbirth inevitably brings pain each time. Even during the process of raising children to adulthood, the pain and distress often outweigh the joy and gratification."

"Even so, you are willing to keep having children?" Yan Luo asked again.

"It is my duty as the Lord of Mayin. I believe it's my responsibility to guide other elves, at least to provide some disaster-resistance capabilities when our race faces catastrophe."

After she finished speaking, the Lord of Mayin City asked Yan Luo, "So, are you willing to have children with me now?"

"No, I'm not willing." Yan Luo shook his head decisively, "My reason is still the same as before. My Lady, the more you said, the more respect I feel for you, but it's still not love. So, please forgive me once again for my refusal."

The elves' dilemma could actually be solved with artificial wombs.

In modern human society, many couples don't wish for direct childbearing. By using both parties' reproductive cells and placing them in an artificial womb, a child can be conceived.

Although this method has some flaws, at least it's an option.

Whether or not to sell artificial wombs to the elves, Yan Luo felt he couldn't decide alone and would need to discuss it with Wu Zechuan, Sasa, and the others when he returned.
