Zhen Xueren raised an eyebrow but hadn't spoken the entire time, also wanting to see what Li Ling would do and what he was made of.
When he suggested sparing them if they survived, she pursed her lips, wondering why he was like this. Why not just kill them on the spot?
Her eyes suddenly narrowed as a certain thought came to mind.
Could it be that… this Li Ling fellow was doing this in order to harvest better blood resentment? After all, foes who were tortured intensively before being killed produced more potent blood resentment, but higher potency meant more difficulty when refining.
That was why she didn't think of this at first. When advancing the Blood Asura Descent, there were two things that were important.
The first was the Blood Strength, and the second was the Blood Resentment—essentially how high the realm of the person being harvested was and how intense their negative emotions were before death.
She normally didn't focus on increasing the blood resentment of her victims because it also increased the chances of undergoing deviation and demonization.
She liked blood strength, which was typical among Asura Path disciples at the higher realm.
Don't look at the entire Six Paths Demon Sect and think its cultivation was smooth. Demonic cultivation would be much more popular continent-wide if one only had to worry about the morality of it.
In truth, the reason the righteous path still dominated for so long was simply because demonic cultivation was quick and sweet at the early realms, but incredibly hard and dangerous at the higher realms.
Every single round of cultivation was precipitous, so they had to take various shortcuts and assistive methods to be able to progress higher, especially since they usually pursued combat power and neglected foundation.
Li Ling, who had such pure blood energy even at the second realm, enough that he could even inspire others, was a top-notch exception.
Otherwise, why would he be treated so well?
"Ah! Ancestor!!!" a Foundation Establishment elder of the sect wailed in lament, feeling his heart shatter.
Immediately, the others snapped out of their stupor and wailed as well, knowing that their best chance of survival was gone.
Without the Ancestor to hold down the fort and control the sect's formation, how were they going to survive Li Ling's challenge?
Li Ling snorted and returned to where he had been, beside Zhen Xueren. Then, with a soft smile that was quite infuriating to look at, he pointed upwards.
Zhen Xueren was unable to resist looking up despite her wide range of Void Sense, and those in the Black Heaven Sect had no choice but to, as the sun was blotted out the very next second.
Meteor Spell!
Well, the scene was quite nostalgic to the eyes of Li Ling.
It was the usual scene of shock, despair, screaming, and death as the gigantic, elementally powered meteor struck the weakened formation, broke through, and happily crushed everyone within without discriminating based on sex, race, or gender.
Truly a model entity of this era!
「System Prompt: You have gained 7,445 Slaughter Points.」
The reward was much less than Li Ling expected. A sect like the Black Heaven Sect should have over 1,000 Qi Refinement disciples and more than 50 Foundation Establishment elders, but according to Li Ling's calculations, there were only about 800 Qi Refinement disciples and 35 Foundation Establishment elders.
Taking away those killed in the first strike that he also harvested—which numbered about 80—there was still a deficit of a hundred first-realm disciples and more than ten elders!
Given that he earned such a huge amount from one Meteor already, it seemed a bit excessive of Li Ling to be making these petty calculations by the side, but he would naturally disagree.
If there was one saying from Earth that he believed in, it was the one that stated that rich people never stayed rich by being lax with their money, like poor people thought.
Instead, they were more miserly and penny-pinching than a beggar by the roadside, and Li Ling perfectly emulated this behavior!
Normally, no one would notice such missing numbers. Who had time to go and do a roll call in the midst of a war?
But who asked Li Ling to have a killing system that tallied numbers? Now, those poor escapees were discovered directly and would not be able to leave smoothly!
"Senior Sister, I suspect that some of them might have used a special method to escape," Li Ling immediately reported to the one with a stronger spirit sense than himself.
Zhen Xueren glanced at Li Ling askance. "That is normal. We can never get all the targets in every War of Annihilation, and it is generally taken that those who can escape have proven themselves capable and can go scot-free."
Li Ling could only tsk and accept it as it was. He didn't have nearly enough Slaughter Points to reach perfection of the third realm in both disciplines, so it was back to grinding for him.
At least, the good news was that the war against the Black Heaven Sect was over, meaning he was free to join another war or take on some tasks.
Naturally, Li Ling was not willing to easily join another war after what happened here. While Wars of Annihilation were ways to quickly accrue Slaughter Points, it was only in those bigger wars with larger numbers.
And those wars were filled with encounters like what Li Ling had just experienced, but he wouldn't always be so lucky to bluff his way out by relying on his Void Seeking Physique as a smokescreen.
"Well, I'm done here. Will Senior Sister be returning to the Holy City?" Li Ling inquired with a smile.
Zhen Xueren nodded and looked at Li Ling deeply. She then flicked a drop of black-colored blood that had practically congealed into mass, which Li Ling caught with ease.
"I don't like to entangle myself with too much karma; it's hard to liberate yourself later on. This token represents me and should give you some backing in the lower and middle layer of the sect."
Saying this, she took a step and vanished into thin air, tearing through the void to rush back to safety. Every second she stayed out here gave Zhen Xueren a bit of discomfort and worry.
Li Ling smiled knowingly and glanced once more at the rubble of the Black Heaven Sect before entering subspace with Void Step, rapidly traversing to the site of the war outpost.
When he came, he saw that the outpost was being packed up, as confirmation of the war being over had already been given by Zhen Xueren when she was captured.
Li Ling descended at the entrance of the half-broken-down Six Paths Pavilion and angled towards the Artifact Refining Store, ready to claim his commission from earlier in the week.
When the lanky True Human Hall disciple who manned the counter saw him, he was startled before he hurriedly reached under the counter to bring out a package sealed in bound cloth and covered with suppression runes.
"Path Lord Li, your commission is complete. We were about to deliver it to your residence in the Holy City, but seeing as you're here, you can claim it now." The fellow revealed with sweat on his forehead, as if being near Li Ling was akin to standing near a snake.
This was definitely different from his previous demeanor of calmness and slight respect when he made the commission, and his behavior—which indicated great respect and reverence when he came yesterday. In just a day, this fellow who revered him now feared him, and Li Ling could guess why.
Even if those Path Lords had been sworn to secrecy, there was a lot of shocking news involving this whole final battle that those who were not there could only imagine. The fact that more than two dozen Path Controllers and approximately a thousand Path Walkers died was not big news across the whole sect, but for the Six Paths Hall, it was deafening.
And despite all of this, Li Ling not only upheaved the entire outpost before the final battle, but there were talks and suggestions that he was a core reason why the final battle was a success. Yet when asked further, those involved said it involved the upper echelons of the sect and that the news couldn't be spread, creating an aura of mystery and danger around Li Ling, who was already becoming a household name.
Li Ling chuckled and took the wrapped-up item, which should be his specially commissioned spear, and then shook it slightly. Despite the force used, the wrapping did not budge, causing his face to shift slightly.
The lanky fellow hurriedly shook his head. "No, you must inject your blood energy into the spear. It only reacts to your blood energy and cannot be wielded by anyone else but you."
Li Ling heard this and tilted his head with surprise, but then let a small surge of his potent Blood Aura into the wrapping.
WHOOSH!
Immediately, the entire area was bathed in a resplendent glow as the newly born item was unveiled!
