" Goodnight my little angels." Melinda who sat by their bed, blew a goodnight kiss at her two asleep children before quietly turning of the rooms lantern then making her way out of the room.
" What's going on..." Melinda almost exclaimed in surprise but hurriedly covered her mouth to avoid waking up Mel and Sal.
She had just tucked the children in for the night only to feel the contract between her and her husband, weakening.
" Is darling in some sort of trouble?..."
" Is he going to be ok..."
" Maybe I should summon him just to be sure."
" But what if it's nothing and I end up getting in his way."
Melinda was worried but decided in the end, not to rush to conclusions, thinking to herself that he might've just encountered an enemy he couldn't defeat easily.
But as she lay'd in bed alone, in their bedroom, her heart became more and more unsettled as the connection between them weakened more and more. In the end she decided to summon him.
But to avoid any sudden disturbances, she headed down stairs to the sitting room to summon him, and since Su Ping was to weak to reject the summoning from the contract, her summoning was a success yet, the moment he appeared, Melinda felt as if her fragile heart was assaulted by a volley of arrows.
" Sweetie, please wake up!" Melinda caressed his face.
" Don't you dare close your eyes on me! Wake up for goodness sake... please wake up." Melinda's muffled cries filled the entire room. No matter what she did, Su Ping didn't show any signs of awakening.
While crying, she suddenly realized that something else was also summoned along with her husband. She saw three spheres of darkness attached to her husband through 3 dark chains.
" Are those things why he's like this?" Melinda sniffled while wiping away her tears. She felt hurt, thinking that someone had forced her husband into such a state, she couldn't help blaming herself.
" If I didn't let you leave with that demon, this wouldn't have happened... It's all my fault... it's my fault you ended up like this."
" How could I let you go when I knew something like this would happen." Melinda cried while reaching towards the black chains protruding from her husband's back.
"..Kyaa~!" Melinda let out a sharp cry the next moment but hurried to covered her lips before someone would hear.
Melinda stared at the chains with apprehension, she didn't expect to instantly get hurt from touching them alone. Nevertheless, she felt like the pain she felt was rather strange, unlike an attack.
"Greater sight..." Melinda casted a magical spell she had learned from her husband. Her vision suddenly changed, now she was able to see things far more clearly, as well as the faint particles of magic in the air.
The difference between a skill and spell, is that, Skills are rooted in proficiency or system rewards and may or may not use mana, while spells on the other hand, are learned magical abilities that always cost mana to perform.
Skills feel more "mundane" or technique-based, even if enhanced by the system, because they are only gotten innately, through growth or after ones proficiency meets a certain requirement, while spells are overtly supernatural and cannot be used unless one comprehends it, whether from a scroll, skill book or writing, moreover, the person in question must be able to cast the said spell.
The reason, being because some spells have certain requirements like racial factors, materials and the like, not just anyone can cast them, but as for the spell, Greater sight, like several others, it's only requirement was mana consumption and Melinda just so happened to meet it's requirement.
She displayed a look of surprise when she saw a steady stream of mana being pulled out from the three dark spheres through the chains and into her husband.
" It's actually a healing spell of some sort?" Melinda's eyes brightened, she turned towards her husband and placed her fingers above his nostrils, a jolt of excitement coursed through her when she felt the faint touch of his breath.
" Your still alive..." Melinda beamed with happiness but she was quick to stop her agitated heart. Since he was still alive, she needed to do everything she could to make sure he stayed that way.
" Darling needs magic power to heal. I have to get him some magic power... But how." Melinda churned her mind to think up something.
" Mana stones. Mana stones should work... I need to get some mana stones." Melinda affirmed her goal, she carefully lay'd her husband's head back on the floor before running upstairs and back with some blankets, bedsheets and pillows in hand.
Melinda placed him on the bed sheets before carefully covering him with the blankets, then making sure his head was properly rested on the pillow, while also avoiding the chains attached to his back.
She then hurried to her room, Melinda searched everywhere before finding a small wooden box with fine craftsmanship.
opening it, the moon's luminescent glow was reflected onto her face by several coins made of gold, bronze, copper and silver. These were all her life savings, jewelry, as well as her own dowry. She had been saving it for her children so as to get them an opportunity to be admitted into a prestigious Academy.
Melinda didn't hesitate before wrapping the small wooden box in some cloth. It pained her a little to be doing this but right now she was more worried about her husband than anything. After quickly putting on some proper clothes, Melinda left the house under the veil of night.
Since their village didn't possess any extravagant shops or a bank that had mana stones, she decided to go from house to house throughout the village, asking if anyone had some mana stones.
She decided to start with the house of
the villager most versed in magic, a dropout from a prestigious magic academy.
