Nightblade (Darkest night)

Chapter 125: Uncanny foes

‎That was easier said than done.

‎ While the people that they were facing were probably not on the same level as them, they had the advantage of numbers.

‎Nrvax and Alissa had trained with the best of the best at using their abilities.

‎No one could make the killsquad without being the absolute best at what they did.

‎But paranormal battles simply had too many variables.

‎Even with greater skill, stronger opponents could be subdued by uncanny foes, with the advantage of superior numbers.

‎And while skill was a big determinant of the outcome of the fight, the Talented's abilities also play a key role because of their elusive and unpredictable nature.

‎Of course, at the start of the conflict, Alissa and Norvax had previously had the element of surprise on their side, but that was quickly fading fast.

‎The cloud of dust from earlier was fading, and only the giant piles of wooden crates afforded them cover from the enemy.

‎From his vantage point, Norvax had a view of the warehouse's entrance.

‎The elemental type Talented that Norvax had taken out was being attended to by one of the other Talented

‎"From the looks of things, they never moved with a healer. They probably didn't expect much of a fight, or they underestimated our capabilities that much. "

‎If the group had moved with a healer type, which was incredibly rare, then the fight would have already resumed.

‎Norvax turned back, studying the situation through the infrared feature of his visor.

‎"So now all I can see are five, no, make that seven heat signatures, including the guy whose hand I severed. "

‎" You what?!"

‎Alissa stared at him in disbelief.

‎Norvax grinned at her flabbergasted reaction.

‎" This is a fight, sweetheart. 'Accidents' are bound to happen, and there are bound to be casualties. Besides, they had it coming from the moment they attacked us."

‎Norvax shrugged, ducking back under the cover of the pile of crates.

‎"I'm just giving as good as I get."

‎Alissa got into a crouch, staring at Norvax intently.

‎"So what's the plan?" she whispered.

‎For now, Norvax was using guerrilla tactics to slowly grind down the enemy's mind.

‎Of course, if you succeeded in doing that, then the fight was as good as done.

‎"For now, I think it's best to wait and observe for a while," Norvax pondered

‎If we are lucky, we won't have to do a single thing. Jeff and Aisha will soon be here with reinforcements, and then the odds will be on our side."

‎" Come out, come out, Norvax. Talented shouldn't hide from each other like this," the peculiar woman, who was evidently the leader, said in a sing-song voice.

‎Alisa's mouth fell open in shock.

‎"She knows your name?"

‎Norvax raised his arms in a gesture of surprise.

‎" Probably from when she was running around in my head."

‎The woman continued speaking.

‎" If you don't, I'll be forced to take some very unsavoury...and possibly drastic measures."

‎She was only met with silence.

‎Letting out a weary sigh, she grinned.

‎"At least I tried," she said, shrugging nonchalantly.

‎In the next second, the ground reverberated beneath their feet.

‎Norvax's eyes widened slightly beneath the silver visor of his suit.

‎" What the hell is happening?"

‎Norvax's eyes widened the a short while later narrowed in realization.

‎Then he cursed out loud.

‎Within a few moments, stress marks appeared in the concrete floor of the warehouse.

‎" What's going on?" Alissa hissed, creeping closer to him.

‎"That woman, she's completely lost it. She probably has several telekinetic-type Talented with her." Norvax suggested, scratching the silvery chin in his helmet.

‎" What we're witnessing is telekinesis on a large scale. If I'm to guess, she's probably trying to just lift the whole warehouse clean off the ground."

‎Inwardly, Norvax grinned, his lips curling in amusement.

‎" There's no better chance to strike. We'll move now while they're distracted."

‎Norvax paused, turning back to Alissa.

‎In his mind, a new variable suddenly popped up.

‎" If you could read my thoughts From A distance away Then what about Alissa..."

‎Alissa stared at his unmoving form.

‎" What's the matter?"

‎Norvax turned back cocking his head slightly.

‎ If Alissa was compromised, then he'd have to tread carefully.

‎" Change of plans."

‎All around them, the old warehouse was groaning and coming undone.

‎Cracks spread throughout the floor, creeping up the walls with wrenching groans.

‎Their pursuers also closed in on them from all directions, bearing down on them like ravenous wolves, herding them to one spot through the maze of crates and debris.

‎But Norvax refused to be easy prey, even outnumbered seven to two.

‎He had survived an encounter with a maestro and an even possibly more powerful being, a Lord.

‎In contrast, dealing with several Talented at the class A-4 rank or close was a walk in the park.

‎Turning his gaze to Alissa, he gestured in the direction of the crater.

‎" I'll attack them from up close, you'll support me from the rear. We'll first whittle their numbers down to size. If we can't do that, we'll slow them down enough for reinforcements to arrive."

‎Of course, there was a much easier plan. He could simply grab Alissa and bolt for the exit.

‎But there was no telling how many enemies awaited them beyond the warehouse.

‎Outside the warehouse, a peculiar sight was playing out.

‎To anyone watching the unfolding spectacle, the formerly stationary warehouse was playing a bizarre game of tug with itself, its walls tensing and shifting with almost lifelike contractions.

‎The entire structure strained and groaned in on itself.

‎And the whole while the mastermind of the whole thing watched disinterestedly, cruel amusement dancing in the depths of her eerie purple eyes.

‎Clad in a dark, long leather coat and long leggings with flaming red boots, the femme fatale gave off a dangerous air.

‎The leader of the small group of Talented was a squad commander within the Crows, going by the name of Candace Red.

‎Red was her real name, of course. It was a name that the rest of the Crows had given her, due to the unique fiery red colour of the flames she conjured, courtesy of the ability she wielded.

‎If she were ranked within the Praesagius, she would probably be class A-4, probably close to class A-5.

‎She wielded a total of four abilities.

‎That was how she'd been able to get into Norvax's head and siphon through his thoughts.

‎For a moment, she'd almost had him, but then the cunning man had figured her out.

‎From what she could tell, she'd made no mistakes on her part.

‎But then again, one couldn't be part of Praesagius' special squads without a keen intuition.

‎The man probably had an extraordinary sixth sense. This was supposed to be an easy mission, but surprisingly, several small complications continued to crop up, disrupting the flow of events.

‎Originally, Candace was fine with simply retrieving the vault, but then one of her subordinates had been injured, despite the friendly greeting they'd sent.

And then right in front of her eyes, the grey-eyed man, she knew only as Norvax, had literally ripped off the arm of another of her subordinates.

‎As a leader, she feels quite insulted.

‎So a little payback was in order.

‎From what she'd been able to see in Norvax's thoughts, he had another ally with him in the warehouse. But peculiarly enough, she couldn't sense any other person within the warehouse.

‎Unless, of course, it was a trick he was using to try and make her and her team let their guards down.

‎In which case, he was really good.

‎And they'd be dealing with a bona fide class A-5.

‎ From what she'd seen so far, he possessed immense strength and speed.

‎That would explain how his group had been able to injure Malik a.k.a Steve with only a couple of brats.

‎But then again, there was also the possibility that his thoughts were actually the truth. That would mean they were dealing with two lethal Talented.

‎" What a pain."

‎Curiously enough, none of them was attacking yet.

‎Norvax had thrown rocks at them, an ingenious weapon.

‎She'd been surprised when she realized the projectiles for what they were, stopping them in the air with her telekinesis.

‎And since the two of them were not making a move, she'd bring the fight to them.

‎Straining slightly, her purple eyes glowed brighter, and the entire building trembled tremulously. Then, with a groan, the walls broke free of the building's foundation, slowly rising into the air.

‎A wild grin appeared on Candace's face. Relinquishing her hold on the building, she spun around, sending an object approaching at an incredibly high speed.

‎The Telekinetic Talented behind her grunted, gritting their teeth.

‎The building began to collapse, breaking down into smaller pieces that could be remotely wielded.

‎Candace telekinetically grabbed onto the pieces of debris, forming them into a makeshift shield that was both her offense and defense. The debris intercepted a long, sleek javelin aimed at one of the telekinetic Talented behind her.

A split second later, an explosion of brute Force parted the air in front of her, forcing her back a few steps.

Licking her lips slightly, Candace's grin grew wider

" Aren't you the feisty ones?"
