The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 161: The Guide

At the summit of the massive peak, the clouds and fog veiled everything, a gigantic altar stood.

The altar appeared and disappeared within the fog, like a colossal beast standing there, filled with the traces of the ages.

A vast and ancient aura rushed forward, causing both Sun Wukong and Emperor Donghua to halt their steps.

"Is this the altar?"

Emperor Donghua asked Sun Wukong with his eyes.

"No."

Sun Wukong turned his head around, glanced over it, and understood everything in an instant.

"This entire towering peak is an altar."

The whole mountain was an altar, with the grey mist and lightning being the display of the altar's power.

Approaching the center of the altar, various totems began appearing on the ground before Sun Wukong, thousands of lines interweaving together, stretching up to the highest point of the altar.

He looked at these totems, and in an instant, Sun Wukong's body froze.

As if alive, those totems surged into his eyes, transforming into countless patterns interlacing in his heart, and then formed the pattern of a Light Tree.

This spectacle astonished Sun Wukong, and he quickly focused on it.

It was a tree that embodied the order of the heavens and earth, the cycle of life—Sun Wukong had created something similar—the Wanling Tree.

But this tree was evidently much more complex and profound than the Wanling Tree.

The appearance of the Light Tree lasted only a few seconds before dissipating from Sun Wukong's sight.

The light in Sun Wukong's eyes faded, reflecting the curious face of Emperor Donghua.

Were you just daydreaming? Or did you see something?

Emperor Donghua asked with his gaze.

Sun Wukong pondered for a moment.

"...A world."

He continued, "I saw a world."

That was the structural rules of a world.

Sun Wukong raised his head to look at the altar, and he understood in his heart.

This was the last legacy of the Hongmeng World.

The creatures of the Hongmeng Land had left behind their wisdom through this altar.

Sun Wukong sensed that the egg was right ahead.

The white fog ahead of him parted, revealing a path leading above the altar.

The two of them walked over and saw the egg floating in the center of the altar from afar.

It was the only light on the altar, hovering up and down, surrounded by the carcasses of Demon Beasts.

A lament was sounding around that egg; it was the will left behind by the Demon Beasts before their deaths, lingering here after eons.

"We've arrived."

Just as Sun Wukong was about to go forward, he suddenly felt an unfamiliar presence behind him.

He turned around, and tens of figures walked through the fog.

Those were the powerful beings who had followed them here.

But how did they get through the grey fog and the sea of lightning?

"They are with me."

As if hearing Sun Wukong's inner question, a voice spoke.

Sun Wukong looked up to see the pharmacy's Shopkeeper walking over from behind the crowd.

"Sun Wukong, thank you for leading us here."

The Shopkeeper said.

Sun Wukong saw the rabbit in his arms, and the bracelet.

"Why did you bring them here?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"To witness."

The Shopkeeper looked towards the altar and said, "To witness the revival of this land."

Sun Wukong furrowed his brow: "You knew all along?"

"I knew."

The Shopkeeper nodded and said, "This is the last piece of preserved Hongmeng Land, and the creatures of the Hongmeng built this altar before their extinction with the purpose of reviving this land."

Sun Wukong's doubts were mostly dispelled.

The other beings exchanged glances, looking toward the egg on the altar, understanding dawned upon them.

"That egg is the hope for saving this land."

"This is the reason why Sun Wukong came here."

Everyone looked at Sun Wukong.

At this moment, whether they disliked or liked Sun Wukong, they all hoped he could succeed in reviving this land.

"Unfortunately, Sun Wukong is not here to save the land."

At this time, the Shopkeeper sighed and said: "He's only leading the way for the true master of the Hongmeng Land."

The crowd was in an uproar.

Sun Wukong looked at the Shopkeeper.

The Shopkeeper with regret said, "The revival of this land still requires a sacrifice; the current Sun Wukong... does not have such a sacrifice."

Sun Wukong might be an Overlord, but he grew up too fast.

This meant that he had not truly unlocked the secrets of the egg.

To revive this land, just having the egg was not possible.

The Shopkeeper set the rabbit down on the ground.

Sun Wukong looked at the rabbit, a flash of golden light in his eyes, but he said nothing.

After the rabbit hit the ground, it ignored the gazes of others and quickly hopped towards the altar.

With a "boom!", without Sun Wukong lifting a finger, Emperor Donghua flashed forward and crushed the rabbit dead with one foot.

"It's useless."

The Shopkeeper said, "The rabbit was just their eyes observing the outside world; my guest will be arriving here shortly."

The moment the words fell, a gust of sinister wind blew by, and a faintly discernible shadow appeared in front of the altar.

"After waiting for countless eons, finally back."

It was a disheveled old man.

Chains of pitch-darkness lay under his feet, clanking with each step he took toward the altar.

And with each clank, a totem on the ground would light up, auspicious light appeared on the altar, resonating with the Heavenly Dao.

This was an ultimate Great Method.

With the Heavenly Dao resonating, the surrounding beings were all unable to move.

Only Sun Wukong turned around, looking at the old man with a scrutinizing glance.
