Lin Chuan bowed slightly, tapped his right foot on the ground, and vanished on the spot. The sudden disappearance dumbfounded Old Li, followed by a dark figure flashing past from his right side.
Bang...
Lin Chuan's fist smashed heavily onto the left side of Old Li's forehead. The dull thud instantly caused stars to burst before Old Li's eyes and left his mind blank as he staggered and fell. Then, with a whirlwind kick from Lin Chuan, Old Li flew out like a kite with its string cut.
"Old Li!" One of Long Wu's underlings hurriedly rushed over.
"Trash!" Long Wu roared with fury, saying, "How can you be knocked out so easily!"
"Long Wu!" Lin Chuan looked at Long Wu coldly.
Long Wu was so frightened that he took several steps back. He forced himself to calm down, then looked at Lin Chuan and said, "What... what do you want to do!"
"I want to break one of your arms." Lin Chuan said, hands in his pockets.
"You..." Long Wu turned pale with fear and shouted, "Quick... charge!"
The underlings behind him immediately swarmed up. However, these men were not a match for Lin Chuan at all. Lin Chuan was extremely ruthless—on the battlefields of North Africa, with his own might, he swept through over a hundred rebels from a certain country and was hailed as the blade of the nation, the assassin of the soldiers. Facing these scums of society, Lin Chuan did not take them seriously at all.
"Damn it, daring to bully our boss, go to hell!" Several men brandishing knives and clubs charged up.
The leader was a young man holding a one-meter long machete, dressed in a white shirt. Lin Chuan skillfully turned his body following the trajectory of the opponent's blade, then fiercely grabbed the man's arm, and with a crack, squeezed down hard along the lines of the bones.
Clang...
The machete fell to the ground, and the man immediately knelt down from the pain, screaming miserably.
Bang...
Lin Chuan stepped on the back of the man in the white shirt and immediately soared into the air. Mid-flight, he kicked a follower of Long Wu in the face, sending the man flying. Seeing this, the other followers knew that charging in would only lead to being beaten, so, gritting their teeth, they rushed forward, ready to take the beating.
Lin Chuan performed a 'double swallow kick', simultaneously hitting two men in the face with both legs, and both men crashed to the ground.
Long Wu, trembling and biting his cigarette, felt a million grass-mud horses galloping in his heart. He had spent two hundred thousand only to end up with this outcome. He knelt down with a plop and said, "Bro, please... don't break my arm, can't I just buy off my arm with money?"
Lin Chuan was stunned and then remembered that Zhou Kai and the others needed three hundred thousand to set up a motorcade. He promptly raised three fingers: "Three hundred thousand."
"That much!" Long Wu trembled all over and said, "Bro, a surgery would just cost tens of thousands!"
"Then let's go with breaking the arm." Lin Chuan suddenly moved towards him.
"No, no, no!" Long Wu quickly shook his head and said, "I'll pay the three hundred thousand."
"Go, have someone bring over the three hundred thousand." Lin Chuan replied.
"Bro, I... I've got a hundred thousand on me." Long Wu awkwardly said, "Can I use two after-eight-wheel trucks to offset the debt?"
"After-eight-wheel trucks?" Lin Chuan was energized and smiled, "You have them?"
"Yes, I have two." Long Wu hastily said, "I used these two trucks for construction projects in the early years. I'm not doing it now."
"Alright, I'll have someone pick up the trucks tomorrow." Lin Chuan nodded.
After collecting a hundred thousand in cash and receiving a promissory note, Lin Chuan temporarily spared Long Wu and his crew.
...…
In the bungalow area of Changlin Community, a few sparse lights were on. In the past, there were dozens of households living here, but now, only a dozen remain. Those who could afford it had moved out to buy their own houses. The rest were the old, the weak, the sick, and the disabled who did not have the capability to buy houses and had to make do with living here.
At the Lin family house, the lights were bright.
Lin Chuan's mother was already waiting at home for her son to return. The table was set with hot, steaming dishes. She leaned on her crutch at the doorway, peering out, a trace of worry on her face. It was already so late, and Lin Chuan had not returned, her heart feeling as if it were tossing and turning on choppy waters, insecure and uneasy.
"Mom, I'm back," Lin Chuan called out from afar.
"Chuan, you're finally back." Lin Chuan's mother, leaning on her crutch, hurriedly welcomed him.
"Sorry to make you worry," Lin Chuan said with a smile.
"Have you been drinking?" Lin Chuan's mother sniffed the aroma of alcohol on Lin Chuan.
"Hmm, I had a few drinks with Zhou Kai and the others," Lin Chuan quickly explained, "But I haven't eaten yet."
"Then hurry inside and eat." Seeing her son return, she finally felt relieved.
After entering the house, Lin Chuan washed his hands, and his mother served the dishes. Lin Chuan shared with his mother the news about finding a job, and upon hearing this, she was overjoyed.
"Really?" Lin Chuan's mother said excitedly, "What job?"
"Working for the municipal government, as a driver," Lin Chuan smiled.
"Driving for a leader?" Upon hearing this, Lin Chuan's mother became even more delighted: "That's great, you must do well in the future, and not let down the leader's expectations. Understand?"
"I got it," Lin Chuan nodded.
For his mother, her son finding a formal job, a decent job that they could be proud of, was certainly something worth boasting about. Eagerly, Lin's mother served her son food and picked dishes for him.
The mother and son lived in a cramped space. Although they were poor, they were happy together. His return gave her immense happiness, and being able to be by his mother's side also filled Lin Chuan with contentment. Dependent on each other, Lin Chuan looked at his mother, who now had a full head of white hair, and silently vowed in his heart to ensure a happy life for her, one free from material worries.
......
The next day, Lin Chuan woke up early and went to Zhou Kai's house, then he dragged the kid out of bed. Zhou Kai's parents were rarely home, which contributed to the kid's sloppy character.
"Brother Chuan, what's up?" Zhou Kai, with red eyes, hurriedly covered himself with his bedding, protecting his underwear.
"Get up," Lin Chuan responded.
"For what?" Zhou Kai sat up slowly.
"There's money to be made. Are you in?" Lin Chuan smiled and said.
"Yes!" As soon as Zhou Kai heard about money, his eyes lit up.
"Then hurry up and get ready, I'll wait for you outside!" Lin Chuan dropped this line and immediately walked out.
In less than five minutes, the guy had already finished brushing his teeth and washing his face. He came bouncing over and asked, "Brother Chuan, where can we make money?"
"Here, take this!" Lin Chuan handed Zhou Kai a package.
Zhou Kai hurriedly opened it, and the sight of stacks of bright red bills instantly made his eyes sparkle. He took a deep breath, "My God, Chuan, where did you get all this money? You... you didn't really go rob a bank, did you?"
"Stop talking nonsense." Lin Chuan glared at him and said, "Go round up your buddies."
"Alright!" Zhou Kai quickly pulled out an iPhone 4 and dialed his friends in a flurry.
Half an hour later, everyone had arrived – Lu Dapao, Huang Bo, and a few other guys with names not worth mentioning, wearing dungarees and sporting hair dyed in red, yellow, blue, and green. They were all seventeen or eighteen-year-old boys, at an age of naïve confusion as well as extreme rebelliousness. Hearing that there was money to be made got them all excited.
"All of you, hurry up and greet Brother Chuan," Zhou Kai glared at them.
"Brother Chuan," the boys quickly bowed.
"Alright, everyone get in the car, we're going to find Long Wu!" Lin Chuan declared.
"Ah?" Zhou Kai was stunned, "Bro, you're not joking, right? Just the few of us are no match for Long Wu."
"Don't worry, Long Wu has agreed to give us two trucks with eight wheels at the back," said Lin Chuan. "Today we're going to get the trucks from him."
"Really?" Zhou Kai was overjoyed, his fleshy body trembling with excitement.
The group excitedly piled into Lin Chuan's car and sped off towards Long Wu's territory.
Long Wu was in his tea house, his territory. He spent his days leisurely drinking tea and fooling around with women, his life couldn't be happier. Any matter was handled by his underlings, leaving him to enjoy his peaceful and domineering days. But eventually, Lin Chuan disrupted his calm life.
"What do you guys want!" The little brothers at the entrance of the tea house stopped Lin Chuan and the others.
"Go, call Long Wu down for me," Lin Chuan responded.
"Grass, is Long's name something you can just call out?" Right as the underlings were about to start a fight, Long Wu came down from upstairs with a smile, "Yo, it's Lin Chuan, perfect timing."
"What about the two trucks with eight wheels at the back you promised me?" Lin Chuan questioned.
"Come on, I'll take you to them," Long Wu quickly said.
Without any hesitation, Lin Chuan followed Long Wu who led the group to an underground garage where many vehicles were parked. They walked all the way inside where Long Wu used a remote control to open a large garage that quietly housed two trucks with eight wheels at the back, both looking fairly new.
"Zhou Kai, you have experience in auto repair, go check if these two trucks are okay," Lin Chuan said.
"Okay." After graduating from a technical secondary school, Zhou Kai had spent a year at an auto repair school. He hadn't really worked much since returning. He first checked the engine oil and then the hydraulic brakes before starting the trucks with a key.
Both trucks started normally, and although there was severe shaking, they would be fine with a few new parts.
Zhou Kai jumped down from the truck and Lin Chuan asked, "How is it?"
"Good!" Zhou Kai, unable to contain his excitement, nodded vigorously.
"Take them away!" Lin Chuan waved his hand.
Although Huang Bo stuttered, his driving skills were quite good. He had a tow truck license, which although bought, didn't impede his ability to drive well. Soon, the two trucks were driven away.
Long Wu watched the group leave with a strange smile on his lips.
"Bro, why give them such good trucks?" Long Wu's underlings were not convinced.
"Heh heh, you think it's that simple?" Long Wu snorted coldly, rubbing his smooth head and his arm still in a bandage. Only after some time, he'd need to go to the hospital to remove the cast. He sneered, "Those trucks aren't something they can just drive off with."
