After hurriedly saying a few apologies, Kuboert fled from the crowd, standing in the corner of the banquet hall, breathing in the chilly air seeping through the window cracks. He loosened the tight collar around his neck to let himself breathe a long sigh of relief.
He felt exhausted, his muscles sore, and most unbearable was the throbbing pain in his head, as if a volcano kept erupting. It wasn't the first time he'd participated in such a long prayer—in fact, this year's warming ritual had been considerably shortened—and skipping breakfast was clearly not the cause of his headache. He just felt as though all the strength had been drained from his body, as if he had fought for seven days and nights, and he barely had the energy to think.
"What's wrong with me?" He used Divine Arts to examine his physical condition. But he didn't find anything unusual or any spell affecting him. As a Priest of the Light God, illness and poison struggled to invade their bodies. "Could I just be too tired?" Kuboert couldn't help but wonder.
The attendant brought some juice, the sweet and sour drink slightly alleviating his discomfort, at least the blood vessels on his forehead wouldn't throb painfully with every heartbeat. He closed his eyes, hoping to quickly rest for a while in this corner, and perhaps take a nap if possible, which would be the best case scenario.
A cloak of black and red appeared before him, blocking his view. Kuboert looked up, from the visitor's feet all the way to her head, and then his mouth fell open in shock. Zilvra stood there with a glass of bright red wine, looking straight into his eyes.
"How did you get in?" Kuboert quickly glanced around, momentarily forgetting his throbbing headache. "Where is Lynch? If he didn't come, how did you pass through the entrance's Magic Array?"
"You mean that giant Detect Evil stone?" Zilvra sneered dismissively, "Just to be safe, I had my follower block its power."
It was then that Kuboert noticed a yellow-eyed middle-aged man standing silently about five steps behind Zilvra, watching this side. Although he showed no expression, Kuboert felt as if he saw a predator's gaze searching for prey; beneath that human mask, there lay a fierce beast.
Zilvra also noticed Kuboert's expression, then tossed her wine glass to a passing attendant. The server was startled by the gesture, clumsily trying to catch the glass. However, Zilvra measured her strength perfectly, and the glass seemed to stick to the tray, not a drop spilling.
"Kuboert, Lynch once praised you, he said you had good insight. Now it seems you really have some discerning eye." Zilvra commented, raising her chin, squinting her eyes as she observed the surroundings. "There is a strange supernatural influence at work here, have you noticed it?"
Kuboert furrowed his brows, discreetly casting several detection spells under the cover of his wide sleeves. But besides the intense glow from Zilvra and the spell radiance of the Paladin guards, it was only the yellow-eyed human shrouded in magical power. The Priest did not detect anything unusual, but he knew Zilvra's character; she was prideful, and wouldn't bother to approach a Priest of different faith merely to utter a lie.
"What exactly is this thing?" Kuboert stood up and whispered to Zilvra, "I haven't found any strange magic power."
Zilvra rolled her eyes at him and from between her teeth spat words that only the Priest could hear: "It's neither Arcane nor Divine Arts! You idiot, if it were so easy to discover, why would I need to come to you? Do you think the priests of the Light God are so impressive?"
Kuboert furrowed his brows even tighter.
