North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 599: Timed Mission_2

Jimmy thought for a moment: "The shooter has been killed, and the bullet detection results are normal. But this reason may not be convenient for closing the case within the department. Our internal investigation results show that there is indeed another shooter. If we close the case directly now, it may cause trouble later."

Kevin: "Do something."

Jimmy took a deep breath, "What do you need me to do?"

Kevin: "Before Christmas, we need some good news."

Jimmy: "I understand, give me a little more time, I should be able to handle it."

Kevin nodded, "How about a drink?"

Jimmy got up and grabbed the Whiskey and glasses from the study; it's the same liquor Kevin usually drinks while smoking cigars in the study, and Jimmy has often drunk it himself—every time it runs low, he brings over a bottle or two to replenish.

Kevin: "The trouble at your office should be resolved by now, right? Have you settled the arrangements?"

Jimmy: "Yes, all adjustments are done; now it's up to the higher-ups if they have new ideas. The current situation should be the final result."

Kevin: "What about you?"

Jimmy: "I'm temporarily acting as the Homicide Team lead. If nothing unexpected happens, I should be formalized next year as Supervisory Special Agent SSA."

Kevin nodded: "Next year, I'll try to adjust Nia's position; for now, it's inconvenient to handle. After you get married, I hope you both can leave the front lines. Doing management is always safer than being outside."

Jimmy: "We're somewhat different from your police station; even if promoted to SSA, it's still about managing a small team and leading people to investigate cases. But don't worry about me; as long as Nia is safe, I'm used to fighting on the front lines."

Kevin: "I understand, but you always need to consider your future position. You understand your disadvantages, right?"

Jimmy understood Kevin's meaning; saying this face to face means he doesn't consider Jimmy an outsider, "Yes, the ceiling is still a bit far, but it would be harder to advance further."

Kevin: "If, I mean if, there are any issues later, are you interested in coming over?"

Jimmy rotated the glass in his hand, took a sip, "That's a discussion for another time; the ceiling is still a bit far, so I haven't considered that yet. Things have to be done one by one, and for now, I'm just patching up my weaknesses, hoping not to get stuck by hard conditions."

Kevin: "I get it. But since living in New York, it's better to keep on good terms with certain people. Alex asked me to meet him last night; it seems he has some thoughts about you."

Jimmy: "What happened?"

Kevin: "Just mentioned you twice, expressing gratitude, but he mentioned his son Elliot seems to be looking for you."

Jimmy chuckled: "I sort of get it now. He's likely an advocate for gun control, and Elliot got kidnapped this time, probably piquing his interest in guns."

Kevin thought for a moment: "It's possible; this is New York, where gun control is mainstream. I understand, if he contacts you, deal with it based on your own thoughts."

Kevin and Jimmy talked about people in government that need attention and some upcoming events they need to attend, and then ended the conversation; Jimmy took Nia home.

Nia had recovered, and it had been a long time since they were together, so naturally, they celebrated her recovery well.

The next day at work, when Jimmy arrived at the office, Mark was already there, "Jimmy, we've found some leads."

Jimmy: "What leads?"

Mark: "Someone from VA heard we're looking for Joseph Carter and provided a lead; there's a street dealer who knows many people getting drugs from him."

Jimmy thought for a while, picked up the phone on the desk, and dialed the forensic office, reported his identity, and quickly got transferred, "Jeff, this is FBI Jimmy Yang.... Yes, do me a favor, conduct drug tests on the two deceased from the amusement park shooting, check if they've used anything... Yes, it's related to the case, it's urgent... Thanks. Goodbye."

Jimmy hung up the phone and said to Mark: "Is there any lead on that dealer?"

Mark: "Just know he's a Latino male, short hair, with unclear tattoos."

Jimmy: "This lead isn't very useful; they're just buying stuff, probably without a special relationship. But it might be worth investigating. Since they're all buying from there, it's likely someone led them, and we may find acquaintances."

Mark: "Yes, I'll keep following up."

Jimmy: "No issues with the psychologist?"

Mark: "They saw different doctors, and each psychologist has many clients; they should be okay."

Jimmy: "We need to find their stronghold. Let Julia investigate his whereabouts later."

Julia arrived at the office on time, Jimmy: "Julia, go to the tech department later, work with them to investigate Joseph Carter's whereabouts, trace backwards, find where he intersects with Daniel."

Julia nodded: "Got it, I'll organize yesterday's leads first."

Mark stood up, "Then I'll check out the dealer; we'll investigate separately."

Jimmy: "Go ahead."

His car keys were still with Mark, making it convenient for him to drive out, but if something urgent happened, Jimmy would be without a car.

Thinking it over, Jimmy called Tim Dunn from the administration department to confirm he was in the office, grabbed a pack of unopened tea leaves from the nearby cabinet, and went to the administration department.

Seeing Jimmy was a headache for Tim; an early call meant bad news, and if it wasn't convenient to say what needed discussing face-to-face, it wasn't a good sign, "Your car broke again?"

Jimmy was surprised, amused, and handed him the tea pack, "Why do you think that? It's just some good tea leaves I wanted you to try."

Tim: "That's it? You're sure?"

Jimmy: "Yes, just that. And, could you assign another car to my team? The two new recruits don't have cars yet; borrowing mine each time is inconvenient."

Tim was relieved hearing it was just the tea, but then bemused by the latter request, "Alright, enough talking; I'll check."

Tim placed the tea pack in a drawer, clicked around the computer with the mouse, "Those two are newbies, right?"

Jimmy chuckled and nodded: "Yes, all new this year."

Tim: "I'll give you a Victoria Crown, one of the vehicles swapped out earlier and still unused, should be perfect."

Jimmy: "Sounds great. Thanks."

Tim: "Have them come by later for paperwork."

Jimmy: "Okay, I'll head back first."

Tim waved and urged him to leave quickly.

Back at the office, Jimmy saw Isabel from Public Affairs sitting on the couch, "Isa, what brings you here?"

Isabel turned to see Jimmy, got up, and walked over to his desk, "Mrs. Mason asked me to check on the investigation of the park shooting and the amusement park shooting; when can we hold a press conference?"

Jimmy grimaced in discomfort, having been pressed by Kevin last night, and now Mrs. Mason's side was pressing too, "The case isn't fully investigated yet, only halfway done. Is it urgent?"

Isabel nodded, "As you know, media applications on our side are overwhelming right now; we can't drag on with this case. If you can't reveal the investigation status, we'll find ways to delay it a bit."

Jimmy pondered, "I'll ask Ruiz; if it must be revealed, we have some interim results."

Isabel: "I'll wait for your update; call me quickly."

With that, Isabel left his office.

Jimmy sighed; Julia turned to look at his conversation with Isabel, her appearance when sighing indicated the difficulty in resolving this issue. But aside from her young status, Julia felt it wasn't her concern, turned to her computer, and continued investigating clues.

Jimmy got up again, aiming for Ruiz's office; ever since having Mark and Julia as subordinates, his work changed a lot—nowadays, he was more like a shuttle between different departments.
