Luke, Xiao Hei, Bart, and others all stood outside the warehouse.
With a smirk that didn't quite reach his eyes, Bart said, "Dempsey, I hear you've got a crush on me?"
"Heh heh..." Xiao Hei let out an evil chuckle.
"Nice one with the cold jokes, Bart." Dempsey hid the license plate behind his back; he hadn't expected anyone to be outside the warehouse. The Mustang was parked right at the door, and he had intended to put the license plate in the car and then bury it somewhere inconspicuous.
"I've got other matters to attend to, we'll chat another day." Dempsey forced a smile, ready to get into his car and leave.
"Buddy, what's that in your hand?" Bart walked up to the side of the Mustang, blocking Dempsey's path.
"It's none of your business." Dempsey placed the license plate behind him with his left hand, and with his right, he reached to pull open the car door, seemingly eager to force his way in and leave.
"You despicable rat!" Bart swung his hamburger-sized fist directly at Dempsey's cheek.
Dempsey was on guard and raised his left arm to protect his face; the punch landed on his arm, pushing him back a few steps.
The license plate dropped to the ground.
"Fuck!" Dempsey rubbed his arm, which was somewhat sore.
"You had it coming!"
The two men scuffled, trading punches and elbows. Although their technique seemed crude, every blow landed with a thud.
Xiao Hei thoroughly enjoyed watching from the sidelines.
Luke picked up the license plate from the ground, 5CFb382.
The number matched Buton's license plate, and coupled with the identical style black pickup truck in the garage, it looked like a sure bet.
However, you can't rely on speculation alone in an investigation; it's all about the hard evidence.
Luke went into the garage to inspect the pickup truck. He carefully checked around it, noting scratches on the right side and sand on the tires, consistent with the suspect vehicle.
Luke snapped his fingers, and Xiao Hei, understanding instantly, pulled out a gun and aimed it at Dempsey, "LAPD, the party's over, hands up."
The name LAPD still carried a lot of weight.
Dempsey panicked, distracted.
Bart landed a punch on his face, sending him tumbling to the ground, "Bastard, see if you dare peep on me again."
Xiao Hei glanced at Bart, "No need to thank me."
Then he cuffed Dempsey.
Luke gestured, "Marcus, take Dempsey into the warehouse.
Bart, you and your brothers wait outside."
"I owe you one for this," Bart spat at Dempsey.
As the warehouse doors closed and the lights came on, Luke looked at the man wearing a cross, "Your name is Dempsey?"
"Yeah, that's me. What do you want?"
Luke tapped the pickup truck with the license plate, "What's this about?"
"I don't know what you're talking about?"
"Under concrete evidence, playing word games is pointless," Luke said.
Dempsey defiantly retorted, "Then let's hear your so-called concrete evidence. LAPD can't just arrest people without cause!"
"I've already told Buton, and I have no interest in repeating myself." Luke threw the fake license plate onto the truck. "If you come clean, I'll take you back to the station.
If you don't admit it, we'll just leave, and that is as simple as it gets."
"Ha, since when has the police station become such a hot commodity? Even if your chief invites me, I wouldn't want to go."
"The five tough guys outside feel the same way." Luke pretended to leave, "Marcus, uncuff him."
Marcus was momentarily caught off guard, "Why? We're just letting him go?"
Luke indicated the door meaningfully, "LAPD is about evidence, but some people aren't so particular."
Xiao Hei caught on, and smiling at Dempsey, said, "I've heard those five freaks like stuffing grenades up people's asses, you better have had some experience with that.
I'm not trying to scare you.
I dislike those guys outside just as you do. Those whiteys are freaks and capable of anything. God help you."
Dempsey's buttocks clenched, uneasy, "You can't do this."
"What's wrong?" Luke asked.
Dempsey pointed toward the warehouse door, "Those people outside, they're capable of anything. They won't let me off."
"Do you have evidence?
Without evidence, we can't just arrest people randomly, plus we're from the Robbery and Murder Department, handling the living isn't usually our job." Luke walked a few steps, turned around,
"Of course, considering your situation, it's very likely we'll meet again."
"Heh heh," Xiao Hei snickered with malicious glee. "Next time we see each other, I hope you're still in one piece. That's my sincere wish, God bless."
Luke and his partner walked straight to the warehouse door, poised to pull it open.
Dempsey became desperate, "Hey, you can't do this, you can't throw me to them; they'll tear me to pieces."
"So what should we do? Shall we take you to the station?" Luke countered.
Looking at the warehouse door, Dempsey could see the shoes of five men through the gap at the bottom, growing more uneasy, "OK, I'll go with you to the station."
Lighting a cigarette, Luke said, "Give me a reason to take you with us; like you said, LAPD can't just arrest people."
"Listen, as long as you take me to the station, I'll tell you everything, OK?"
Luke was an old detective, not so easily fooled, "You've got ten seconds..."

"Clang clang..." At that moment, the several burly men outside had started to push at the warehouse door.
Dempsey's mental defenses completely collapsed, "Stop counting, just don't hand me over to those bastards, I'll tell you everything."
"Then don't waste any more time."
"Huh..." Dempsey took a deep breath, "I was the one who dumped the body in the sea."
