112 - Daggat: The Crew Reflects on their Actions


Daggat found Bobby laughing with Hunter and the others around a fire. The humans were using Keaton's to heal, which was just as good. The two giants seemed to be getting along well. They waved as he approached.

"So, talked to Ketil. Dwarves are good to go. Bobby, can I chat with you for a moment?"

"Okay. Bye, Hunter."

Daggat drew him to a secluded place where they could talk. "So, I need your help."

"What can I do? I am not very useful."

"The trees are. I need you to ask them for a favor."

Suddenly Bobby looked nervous, "I don't know…"

"You remember the goblins?"

His eyes widened as he remembered, "We need to go! There are lots of them coming."

"And that's why I need your help. Look, Bobby, the people here are hurt. So is my party. We need time to heal. We can't walk and heal with a hearth. That make sense?"

"Uh-huh. But we don't have any more of those healing potions…"

"Right, but here is an idea. If you can help us, we would have a better chance."

Bobby looked towards his feet, "I don't like fighting."

"I know, I know… but we really need your help."

"I've hurt enough people," he mumbled. Daggat sighed internally. There wasn't any pushing this. He was having a hard enough time with Hunter.

"Can you at least slow them? I've seen you move the trees. Make it hard for the goblins to get close?"

"I can ask."

"If you can help save these people, then it would help ease the damage Mary caused."

Bobby's expression grew uncharacteristically serious for a moment, "I will speak to the trees. I cannot make any promises."

Bobby stalked off toward the forest to speak with the trees. Whatever that meant.

What was there left to do? Chat with Willow, talk with the crew, get some alchemy done, then nab anything that isn't nailed down before the enemies arrive.

He found Willow and his party lounging by themselves. Tips was sitting on Bragg's lap, one arm around him, chatting intimately. Willow had a hammock set up and was napping. The wolves sat at attention. Ivory wasn't with the group.

One of the wolves softly growled as he approached, and Tips politely moved off of Brag. Willow opened one eye.

"Daggat, what can we do for you?" Willow asked. He yawned.

"Just wanted to touch base. You guys sticking around, right?" Daggat asked.

Brag took off his helmet. His face was a bulbous mess of scars. No wonder he and Tips were so close, he was the very model of goblin beauty.

"Against our better judgment," he said.

"We will help. But, if things go wrong, we're not going to die for these humans." Willow said.

"Of course, of course. I'm going to take the lead on this defense. But I would like your input. You all have more experience."

"Why you? Wouldn't one of the humans want to?" Tips asked.

"Well, the only human worth anything is out of his one trick. The dwarf planned to, but I talked him into letting me handle things."

"Why would you want to?" Willow asked.

"It's a class requirement, I think."

"Class? You get a mortal soul somehow?" Bragg asked.

"Not yet. But I will. Just planning ahead. You guys know anything about Warcaller?"

"Yeah… that's the class of one of the old humans back home. It's all about leading a band of elite warriors. Being adaptable and bolstering your allies. That your goal?"

"Sure is. I know you need intelligence, which I have in spades. Pretty sure I have to successfully lead an army to victory. At least, the general got his class after he did. Hope this counts."

"Well, good luck with it. But, don't get your hopes up. We can't all have hybrid souls like Ivory." Willow said.

"We'll see. Our party already has three. There's a few minor things I want some help with, actually."

"What?" Tips said.

"Bragg, can you help out Klaw? He is cleaning some armor right now, and you look like an expert."

"Sure, why not? I'm stuck here anyway."

"Thanks. Tips, some archery... tips would do wonders for the survivors. They can shoot, but you'd know the best skills to choose. I have a feeling they will level once or twice mid battle."

"If they listen."

"I'll keep you guys in the loop." Daggat said.

Willow gave him a lazy wave as Daggat walked away.

The next few hours were spent visiting various humans. Pat had retreated to her home and was keeping company with a handful of her friends who had survived. Keaton was focused on caring for the wounded. Many of them had healed quite well, while others would still need a few weeks at best.

He found his crew at the late Desmond's house, the place set aside for the monsters to stay.

Hunter was cooking some sort of noodle, using Elyndris's barrel as a table. Klaw was cleaning bits of armor with a wet cloth. Anath and Zuss were chatting, both of them with cups full of ale.

"Hey, good idea," Daggat said as he pulled out a bottle of ale. Zuss had been busy filling their inventory with all sorts of things. It was already almost full.

"Daggat!" Anath squealed, "Hunter is making noodles!"

"Never ate a nood. Looking forward to it. How's the leg?"

"I can bend it now. It snapped at the joint, so it was easy to heal. Though I think there is a scar on it now…" She slowly bent the leg. The equivalent of its elbow did have a mark where the chiton fused back together.

"So, good in three days or so?"

Anath nodded.

"Klaw, how's the heart?"

"It's good. That upgrade sorted me out. I think I can push my heart further without hurting myself."

"That's good," Daggat said as he sat down in a chair, "So… any thoughts on how this experiment went?"

"What experiment?" Anath asked.

"The village! I wanted to see what people are like. Gotta tell ya, they suck." Daggat took a swig from the ale. It was light, but sufficiently bitter.

"Something went wrong, somewhere," Hunter said.

"I don't THINK it was our fault…" Anath said.

"Well, if I didn't kill that human, then Mary wouldn't have done what she did," Zuss said.

"If she didn't do that, the people would still have had to fight the goblins," Klaw added.

"Yeah, but then Leofric and Lisa would be alive," Hunter said.

"And maybe the goblins would have missed the village," Anath said.

Daggat thought about it for a bit, "Yeah… I think we dropped the frog on this one. What did we learn, though? To be better next time."

"Umm… no murder?" Offered Anath. Zuss scoffed.

"Don't try to force your way into everyone's business," Zuss said.

"Maybe just stay away from people that shoot you," Klaw added.

Daggat scowled, "I don't know, guys. This all sounds so… limiting."

"You think not murdering people is too limiting?" Hunter asked.

"Yep. What if they piss you off? Or attack first?"

"Silly goblins." Hunter chuckled.

"Well, what are we supposed to do?" Klaw asked, "Look, we're not exactly a friendly-looking group. People might think Hunter is feral. I'm far too threatening. Zuss is spooky, Anath is creepy, and Daggat is just plain ugly."

"Hey!" Anath and Daggat said at the same time.

"I'm just saying, people are going to be threatened by us. Especially when we get stronger."

"Then we should lean into that." Daggat said, "Try to be as threatening as we are. Make people too scared to screw with us."

"I don't think that will work… we aren't actually scary," Hunter said while filling bowls with pasta.

"Says the eight-foot-tall, red-skinned monster," Zuss said.

"I didn't know oni was bad… my family didn't talk about evolving."

"I like Daggat's idea," Klaw said.

"Good. Then next time, we don't act so nice." Daggat said.

They ate the noodles while chatting and joking around aimlessly. They were an interesting texture and fairly bland. Daggat did enjoy the chew of it.

A knock at the door interrupted their meal, and Ivory poked her head in.

"Hey, so… there's a human here. It came out of the woods."

"So?"

"It claims to be a survivor of the goblin army. Thought you would like to know."

Daggat stood and stretched, "I'll take a look. Where is it?"

"The dwarf is talking to it at his house. I'll come with."

Klaw needed to stretch his legs, so he joined Daggat. Hunter came along as well, in case his aura was needed. A few minutes later, they knocked on the dwarves main door.

Pote opened it, "Oh, hi Daggat."

"I heard there's a goblin survivor. Wanted to see what's up. Thought my charming features could come in handy."

"Oh, thank you. Come on in."

Pote led them to the main room, where Ketil gave Pote an annoyed look. A young man sat in a chair by the fire, a blanket wrapped around him. He had a blank look on his face.

"Hey, Ketil. Who's our friend here?"

"Daggat, this doesn't concern you."

"Sure it does. Here to help, remember? So, who is it?"

"Gregory. His village was attacked, and he ran. He is lucky he found us first."

"Really?" Daggat turned to the human, "Is that true?"

He nodded. There was an aura that drifted off of him, focused in the eyes. Bright and blinding green. Curious.

"How many were there?"

"I… I couldn't say. It was dark." He stammered as he talked.

"Ketil, he have any useful information?"

"He needs to rest. I've already questioned him. He didn't see much, the poor lad."

"How did he outrun the wargs?"

"We don't know they have any."

Something didn't feel quite right. Only one human escaped? This one didn't seem that impressive. He was level six at most. And the eyes looked familiar.

"Klaw, can you kill this man?"

Klaw casually stepped up and grabbed the young man by the throat. He then lifted him into the air. The human struggled, legs thrashing.

"Seems so," Klaw said. Then, a shimmering field expanded from the man. It pushed Klaw away, sending him staggering back.

Ivory was growling, essence upset by the spell she had just cast. "What are you doing?" She demanded.

Ketil drew his ax and stepped over the boy. Daggat shot Klaw a "really?" look. He didn't need to threaten it.

"Calm down, both of you." Daggat held his hands up, "Klaw is a paladin. He can't kill things unprovoked. Except, as it turns out, mind-controlled people."

"His eyes are not glowing," growled Ketil.

"To your weak sight, maybe. Ivory, can you sense magic?"

"I can smell it…" she sniffed around the boy. "Chaos magic. He's right."

"Ketil, invite him to your party," Daggat said.

"What?"

"Just… humor me."

"I'm not the party leader. It defaulted to Pote, since he already had the skill. POTE."

"Yes," Pote said, coming into the room with a steaming mug of something. The human quivered on the ground, not sure what was going on.

"Invite this man to the party. For just a moment."

After a moment, "I can't. He's already at a party."

Daggat clicked his tongue, "That ain't good. How much does he know?"

Ketil connected a few dots, "Nothing specific. But, he knows where we are, and the general layout of the place."

Ivory stopped growling, "You could have just said what you suspected."

"Nah, where's the drama in that?" Daggat leaned in to the human. "So, what did you send back? I assume you can send them messages."

"I'm… not allowed to say." The human stammered.

Daggat frowned, "Hunter, you hungry?"

"I just ate some noodles." He said.

"I meant, hungry for some magic."

"Oh. Good idea," Hunter braced his legs. Then his eyes went somewhat vacant, and his mouth opened. He inhaled with a deep, reverberating sound. Essence poured towards his mouth. Daggat felt his own essence being pulled away as well. He took this opportunity to try to fight against it, pulling back against the effect. He wasn't strong enough, and his essence drained away. He would need to practice. Ivory gasped as her essence was drawn out of her as well.

The magic in the human's eyes was snuffed out like a candle, as was the shield.

"What was that?" Ivory asked.

Hunter burped, his eyes glowed somewhat. Essence began leaking from him, bleeding away like steam. "Interesting taste…" he mumbled.

The human looked more alert. He trembled in fear as Ketil helped him up.

"It's alright, we've got you." He told him.

"Hey, human. What did you send them? Also, get out of that party. It's not good for you, trust me, I know."

"I was told to tell them all I could. He sent out five of us in different directions. One of them is dead…"

"Who did?"

"The big-eyed goblin. He has some sort of… hypnosis. It's strong. Half the village is under it. You have to save them!"

Daggat groaned. "Great. Well, now we know they know exactly where we are. No chance of them passing us by, and they don't have to search. That shaves off a day of prep time. Ketil, you take care of him. I've got to go."

"Alright… and um, good work," Ketil said.

"I'm going to help out here," Ivory said, "Good spotting."

Klaw and Hunter followed him out. He was going to need to expedite things.

Suddenly, the world seemed to shift. Not the world, but the trees. They rippled and… moved. With the thunderous sound of roots ripping free, they closed in. Tightening and forming natural walls. Humans screamed, and people began to move, expecting an attack.

Daggat smiled. Bobby had come through after all.

He opened the group message.

Daggat: <Looks like Elyndris might miss out on the fight. Zuss, Anath, meet me at the altar. Our schedule just got pushed ahead.>
