Goblin Teeth: A Monster Party LitRPG

113 - Daggat: Pre-war Shopping

"Hey, Klaw," Daggat asked.

"Yeah?"

"Why is it sideways?"

The altar had been uprooted from the ground like a tooth. Underneath the stone block that made up most of the bulk was a large, spike-like base. It faded from stone to some crystal and had green lines running through it. A faint light glowed from within.

Next to it was the deep hole it had previously occupied.

"Well, you wanted us to take it with us. Thought I'd get a head start. Was a bitch for me and Hunter to lift; had to use burst of strength."

"Does it still work?" Daggat asked Zuss.

"I think so," She said, looking at it, "What are we doing again?"

"I want to see if we can turn in a quest here. Maybe ask a question or two. See if we can use it to help us. Can you wake it up?"

Zuss kicked it, "Get up."

The altar hummed to life, a sound previously muffled by the earth. The collection of bones and stone bits seemed to be a part of the altar, and they stayed intact even as it had been tipped over. The mass shaped itself into a vague form of a goblinoid creature. It could have been a goblin, hobgoblin, or even bugbear. It was hard to tell.

"Why have you unearthed me?" It demanded.

"We're going to move you somewhere. Didn't know you were so… pointy." Klaw said.

The altar turned at an awkward angle, making itself comfortable. "What do you want?" it asked.

"Can quests be turned in here?" She asked.

"Only quests involving the hunting of monsters."

"Oh, good." Daggat said, "We happen to have a quest for hunting monsters."

He summoned the bag of ears and dropped them in front of the statue-like creature. He had separated the bones beforehand.

The altar turned to face Zuss, "You are my keeper. You may refuse to grant the reward, should you wish."

"It's fine," she said, "What other quests can be turned in here… er, at you?"

"Monster slaying is all I am permitted."

"No killing mortals?" Klaw asked.

It shook its head, "You would need an altar to Ithrenial."

"Fascinating… what do each of the altars do?" Daggat asked.

"We govern our makers will. Sahrzuel, my maker, holds dominion over monsters. Ithrenial, war. Mythraziel, craft. Vaelion, Chaos, and Zenthaviel, balance. This is all I know."

"What of Mihr? Is Hunter's boot thing, Rashail, an angel? What about the Questing Altar? Who made it?" Daggat fired off his questions at a feverish pace.

The Altar growled, "You are not my keeper."

Daggat sneered at it.

"I am," Zuss said, "Answer the questions."

"Mihr is not within the pantheon. I do not know Rashail. The Questing Altar serves the guilds, not an angel."

"I've heard these guilds mentioned several times… what are they?" Daggat asked.

"Daggat, come on! Ask these questions later." Klaw grumbled.

"Alright, alright, it's the last one." Daggat said, "Zuss?"

"Do you know?" She asked the altar.

"Guilds are within Ithrenial and Mythraziels' circle of influence. I know nothing other than what I have said."

Daggat grumbled, "Fine. Well, here's the ears." Daggat kicked the bag.

The Altar reached out a hand towards the bag. It seemed to shrink. Gold mist seeped from the opening. It made another gesture, and two silver boxes and one copper appeared in front of the statue.

"Two silvers? That's it?!" Daggat snarled.

"And a copper," Anath added.

"This is a secondary reward, not the primary task." The Altar said.

"Fine, fine. Let's open them. We'll distribute it to whoever could use the reward best."

Everyone nodded their agreement.

First, Daggat opened the copper box. Like the others, it disappeared, leaving behind a bag of three tokens. Well, it was something at least. He added it to the party total, which now totaled twelve. They had been slowly gaining tokens over time, but with only 10% of their experience going towards them, it was slow. Still, he could buy something useful with twelve of them.

Next, he opened a silver box. It faded into light, leaving behind a silver, metallic scroll.

"Hmm… anyone know what this is?" Daggat asked.

"It's a scroll," Hunter said.

"Yes. Thank you, Hunter." Daggat said between clenched teeth.

He opened the scroll, reading the golden, glowing text. "Purify Gemstone. Increases the purity of a selected gemstone, once per stone."

"Sounds like a skill," Klaw said.

"I have a stone," Zuss said. She reached into the scarf that wrapped her head and withdrew a tiara. It was the same tiara they had earned from defeating the demon. Its gemstone was pitch black. Daggat noted that shadow essence drifted around it.

"Have you been wearing it this whole time?" Anath asked.

Zuss nodded.

"I forgot about that thing," Daggat said. He waved the scroll towards it. Nothing. He didn't see any way to activate it. "Yeah, I don't know how it works. Where's Elyndris when you need her?"

Hunter tapped on the barrel. He had been carrying it around since Elyndris had crawled into it. Since then, she had been silent.

"We'll figure this out later, then," Daggat said. Then, they opened the last box. It turned into a piece of paper with a string attached.

"Ugh… more paper! Where's the good stuff?" Klaw complained.

Daggat ignored him and read the paper.

"Moonlight Mercantile. Instructions- oh good, this one has a guide." Daggat cleared his throat and continued reading, "Step one: Place tag on a flat, featureless wall, taking care to keep the tag level. Step two: Firmly pull the string downwards with steady force. Step three: Enjoy low-priced, high-quality adventuring goods! Status: Open for business."

"What's all that mean?" Klaw asked.

"I'm not sure," Daggat said.

"Let's try it!" Anath said.

It took them longer than they expected to find a suitable wall. A back, white washed wall of Desmond's house was the first they had found.

Daggat placed the tag on the wall and found it stuck. Then, he pulled the string down.

As he did, the tag seemed to grow outwards and downwards. It was several feet across and tall by the time the string couldn't be pulled anymore. He released it, and the paper snapped upwards, rolling into a tight roll.

Where the wall was before was now a window. Iron bars ran up and down the opening, with a square-shaped hole at the bottom. The other side was not Desmond's house, but an entirely different room. Spell cubes stacked on shelves, books lay in shelves, weapons and armor were on display, and baskets contained potions.

Each member of the party stared wide-eyed at the sight. This was not at all what Daggat had expected. He didn't know WHAT he expected, but not this.

"One moment!" A small voice called from within. A minute later, a small figure climbed a stool in front of the window.

She was humanoid, but Zuss's size. Her hair was curled tightly, and her large eyes were made even larger by a pair of thick spectacles.

"What the f-" Klaw began.

"Oh! Uh… welcome to the Moonlight Mercantile!" the creature said.

The monsters stared at her for a moment.

"Is this… your first time using our window tag?" She asked after a moment of hesitation.

Daggat was the first to gather his wits. He held a hand to his companions, signaling he would handle it, "Uh, yeah. Using any window tag."

"Oh! Well, then, let me thank you for choosing Moonlight Mercantile. If I may ask, how did you receive your tag?"

"Quest reward." He said.

She frowned, "That's too bad. Means someone died with one of our tags in their inventory."

"What are you?" Zuss asked suddenly.

"I'm… a merchant?" She offered.

"She means your geneseed. Sorry, we aren't familiar with your kind. And we are also rude." Daggat said.

"Oh! I'm a half-folk."

"Them mortals, or monsters?" Daggat asked.

"Mortals… um, I am sorry to be rude, but are you planning on purchasing anything?"

"Oh, uh, sure," Daggat said. He turned to his party, "Anybody ever… buy anything before? How does it work?"

"My brothers always did it. But, you give them coins and they give you stuff." Hunter said.

"Actually, we deal in tokens." The half-folk said, "But we can convert coins to tokens, if you have them. But… our items are expensive."

"The tag said cheap!" Daggat pointed out.

"Cheap for established adventurers." She opened an interface they couldn't see. "Oh! You have twelve tokens. We have a few items you can purchase. Or a few services."

"What do you have?" Daggat asked.

"Here," she made a motion like tossing something towards them, "You should see our list in the status void."

Daggat entered the void. To his surprise, he still saw the window and the shop. Hovering in front of it was a blue menu of items. It was separated into categories. Services, spell cubes, potions, scrolls, tomes, weapons and armor, and miscellaneous. Both Daggat and the assistant read through the list.

"Some of these are pricey; perhaps we could negotiate?" Daggat asked.

"Prices are set. If you had the correct haggling skills, it would automatically adjust prices."

"I can be quite persuasive," Daggat said.

"I'm sure you can," she said with a forced smile.

"Oh, while I browse, do you know what this is?" Daggat waggled the scroll in front of her.

"You are new to adventuring, aren't you? It is a skill scroll. They allow you to spend a skill point to learn the skill from the scroll without needing the requirements. Are you looking to sell it?"

"You buy things?"

"Certainly! As long as the item is suitable for our clients. Skill scrolls, divine potions, enchanted items, things of that nature."

"How much?"

"Two tokens for a silver skill scroll." She said immediately.

"I can do three."

"That's nice. But I can do two."

Daggat frowned at her, then turned to the party. "Anyone want to be able to… purify gemstones?"

The answer was a resounding no.

"Sure, we'll sell it."

The transaction was simple. He slipped the scroll between the bars, and their token count increased by two.

Services included magic item identification, sending messages, and investing in the store itself. Magic item identification costs one token.

"Hey, lady, can I get this belt identified?" Klaw asked.

"Tokens are expensive," Daggat said.

"I think it does more than what we think," Klaw said.

"There's also this necklace I found, not sure what it does," Anath said. "And I could use more details on my sword."

Daggat mulled it over. It would be a good thing to know specifics. But if they were to identify most of their magic items, it would cost a big chunk of their tokens. "Lady-"

"My name is Yevna, by the way." The shopkeeper said cheerfully.

"Yevna, if we decide to sell an item you identify, does that mean we're out a token?"

"No, as a courtesy, we always waive the cost of identification if you decide to sell it."

"Well, alright. Also, how much gold for a token?"

"Ten gold pieces."

"TEN!" Daggat yelled. Yevna winced.

"That is the current rate, yes."

Daggat had just shy of a thousand gold coins. But ten gold coins were a lot of money. Still… there was an advantage to being rich.

They spent the next few minutes identifying magical items. Yevna inspected each item before reading its effects.

"Belt of Last Stand. Quality two. Grants the wielder a plus one bonus to strength and constitution. This bonus increases the closer the wearer is to death, up to a maximum of plus five. That's a nice item."

"Blade of the Desert Flower. Quality Three. The wielder of this elven blade may cause a gust of wind to blow with a strength equal to the user's charm. This ability may be used once per day."

"Wait, charm? That's weird." Anath said.

"Is it? Charm is the standard item use ability."

"Really?" Daggat asked with full knowledge he was the most charming in the group, "That is interesting."

They continued.

"Spear of bracing. Quality three. The user may lock this spear in place for one second. This ability recovers when sufficient mana is recovered."

"What does that mean? Mana is recovered?" Daggat asked.

"Look, I can sell you this," she scampered off and came back with a book. "Basics of Artifice, volume one. It will give you details on how magic items work."

"Ooh, how much?"

"Three tokens."

"May I… inspect it? For quality."

"You are marked with a copy skill. So… no."

"That's a bit invasive, don't you think?"

She shrugged, then continued. The necklace ended up detecting poison, which they had agreed to sell for two coins. The tiara was a mana crystal set into a simple tiara. It allowed mana to be stored in it. If enough essence was available, such as being worn by a hobgoblin with a shadow core, then that essence would be stored instead. Since the party had cores that stored magic already, and the forest was flooded with mana, they decided to sell it for three tokens.

Zuss did not want her daggers identified; she was confident she knew what they did.

Other items that interested Daggat were a collection of path guides, the cheapest of which was five coins, skill potions, which cost fifteen tokens each, a biotrait potion for the same price, and a few spell cubes.

"I can sell you a spell cube, but Moonlight Mercantile takes no fault if they are illegal in your area. Where are you?"

"We're fine. We don't care about legal," Daggat said.

Yevna scowled at him.

"They ARE legal here. So is alchemy. Got any alchemy ingredients?"

"We do not carry alchemical ingredients. We have a neighbor alchemist shop which does."

"Do you have a tag for them? Like what we found for you."

"No, they are still our competitor. I can sell you a tag for Moonlight Mercantile, though. Six tokens, or a booklet of ten for fifty tokens."

In the end, Daggat purchased one tag, two spell cubes for Elyndris called Field and Crystal; they seemed most interesting: the book on artifice, a bestiary, a skill potion, and one biotrait potion. He converted eight hundred gold coins into tokens. That left him with just shy of two hundred gold coins, which would still be plenty to live comfortably anywhere civilized for a while, and twenty tokens.

"Well, this has been a pleasant surprise. Thanks. See ya when we need ya." Daggat waved at the half-folk shopkeeper.

She politely said goodbye, then pulled on the string still hanging from the rolled paper. The paper snapped down, then rolled back up into itself until it finally disappeared. The window was gone.

"Well, that was fun," Anath said.

"Now we can buy stuff whenever we want," Hunter said.

"Well… tokens are expensive. We got lucky with the gold from the manor. We need to be careful not to splurge TOO much." Daggat said.

"We can at least sell stuff we nick," Zuss said.

"As long as it's worth at least six tokens," Daggat said, "Now, back to the altar!"

They scrambled to the altar. It was now fully night, but the party wasn't bothered by the dark. Hunter had his torch for himself. Zuss woke the altar again with a swift kick.

"What can I do for you, Keeper?" It asked.

Zuss looked towards Daggat.

"Hey," he said, "So, we have a few hundred goblins headed this way. Don't you have an upgrade to keep monsters out?"

"Yes. Monsters of level five or below."

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

"Oh. Not, like, thirteen or so?"

"No."

Daggat frowned at it, then turned away from it, "Well, that was a bust. Waste of money, converting those tokens."

"We could buy some party upgrades?" Anath offered, "I saw a cool decoration set that Zuss would like. Everything is all spiky."

"Decorations are a waste of tokens!" Daggat snarled, "But… good idea."

Together, they sifted through the list of party perks. The priority for Daggat was the virtual arena, but that was going to be a ways off. Instead, they purchased Programmable experience for five tokens and Shared Experience Type for ten.

The first allowed Daggat to divvy up experience in a more controlled manner. Different percentages to certain people, different situations sharing experience differently, and other more complex use cases. Most importantly, it allowed him to set what kind of experience each person received first. Daggat, Elyndris, and Zuss had no choice. But Klaw wanted to start gaining monster levels again. Anath was fine split, and Hunter was keen on reaching level 15 of Hearth Tender. It meant that it would take longer for him to evolve again, but he would be more useful to the party with class levels.

Shared Experience Type was something Daggat had glossed over before; not sure what it would do to help. The Assistant was the one who discovered its use. In short, it unified the methods of gaining experience. Everyone can now gain experience from slaying and eating something. DOUBLE THE EXPERIENCE.

Alfred was still getting experience from the party's adventure, but that was unavoidable. It was part of the contract. But, he did grant experience by draining life, whatever that meant. If one of the party members could figure out how to do that, then they would gain experience even faster.

There were too many little things like that tucked away into menus and different systems. You could easily go years without finding these things.

Hunter ended up with the skill potion. There was a particular skill Daggat wanted him to upgrade. Sacred flame. Specifically to gain the perk Shared Will. It allowed those within the flames' aura to use Hunter's will instead of their own to resist mental effects. Having his allies be mind-controlled in the middle of a battle would be a terrible turn of events.

Klaw drank the biotrait potion. He was close to reaching the Apex of his titular claws and wanted a head start. The mutation, Great Claws, increased the physical size of his claws. When extended, it was as though he wielded four daggers in each hand. One more level, and they would learn what the claw apex granted.

With that, they retired to rest. The coming days were going to be busy. Hopefully, Elyndris would awaken in time for the goblins.
