122 - Daggat: Looking to the Future


"So, how did we do?" Daggat asked. He was set up in a house, he didn't know whose, with several of the more wounded fighters. The worst of them, it seemed. Daggat shouldn't be here. He had only lost an arm. Keaton had survived the battle and had a hearth tended in the room. The man himself was changing the bandages of a groaning woman.

"About thirty casualties. A dozen deaths… my house." Ketil said, dryly.

"An arm," Daggat added, looking at his stump. It was wrapped in more bandages than he had seen in one place. It took an entire day to keep Daggat from bleeding out and patch up the wound. A good amount of the time was spent unconscious. He wasn't really sure how much time had passed.

"And an eye," another voice added. Pote wasn't too far from Daggat, with a bandage wrapped around his head. Ketil had come to check on him, and Daggat took the opportunity to see what was going on.

Ketil wasn't unharmed either; he had a bandage wrapped around his neck like a scarf. Luckily, Hogo hadn't severed any arteries when he tried to bite off his head. Tough bastard.

"What about my people?" Daggat asked.

"Klaw has a few broken bones, Zuss dislocated a shoulder, and Elyndris nearly roasted to death. But they are all walking around, doing stuff. Hunter is fine, and Anath heals quickly."

"Well, that's good. Mostly alive then." Talking hurt, but that wasn't going to stop Daggat.

"Yeah."

Daggat smiled at him, "Just like… you."

Ketil sighed, "Alright. Fine," He turned to face Daggat, "Thank you."

Daggat feigned innocence, "Thanks? For what? My memory is a bit spotty… losing an ARM and all. How did that happen again?"

"Thank you for saving my life, you little prick."

Daggat chuckled.

"Seriously," Ketil continued, "I… didn't think you would do something like that. I am sorry for treating you the way I have."

"Don't worry about it. I AM a prick."

"You… lost your arm, saving me," Ketil said with a soft voice.

"Pssh… only for a bit. Hardly a setback. Hey, Pote, did you get some good experience in the battle?"

He nodded, "Level fifteen now. Most folk are around level ten or eleven, too. How's your… uh, wound?"

"It's pulsing with a sharp, throbbing pain. I can still feel my arm, which is weird. Especially since I can still move things with it." Daggat went to grab the blanket with his missing arm, and it moved as if he had actually grabbed it. "Telekinesis."

Daggat started to get up, but struggled. He was feeling weak and more than just his no-longer-an-arm ached. Keaton rushed to his side; he had been tending to the other heavily wounded.

"Nope, down, stay." He said.

"Did you just tell me… down?" Daggat asked incredulously.

"Yes, because you are wounded and need rest. Please, just relax."

"I can't relax cooped up in here! I still have two legs, let me stretch them."

"As your doctor, I forbid it."

"Hunter is my doctor."

Keaton rolled his eyes, then walked over to a window. "Fine," He poked his head out, "Hunter! He's awake."

A few moments later, heavy footsteps announced Hunter's arrival. He ducked low and stuck his head through the window.

"Daggat!"

"That's me."

"Are you okay?"

"Eh,"

"He wants to walk around," Keaton said.

"Oh. Don't do that, you should rest." Hunter confirmed.

Daggat sneered and wiggled a loose tooth with his tongue, "How am I supposed to know what's going on?"

"That's why I'm your second in command, right? Anath is gathering ears and toes."

"Toes?"

Hunter beamed, "Klaw's idea. So you can snack on them later."

"But why TOES?"

Hunter pretended not to hear, "Elyndris was mad that you spent all the money, but now she's practicing the new spells. Zuss and Klaw are supposed to be resting, too… but they are doing whatever they please. As usual."

"I made an agreement that I would help out for a few days. Can't do that, bedridden!" Daggat jumped out of bed, then stumbled a few steps. He suddenly felt lightheaded.

"Please, your stitches will come undone," Keaton said.

"You should listen to him," Hunter said half-heartedly.

"That's it, I'm going to be my own doctor," Daggat said, then made to leave the room. Keaton went to stop him.

"Don't bother," Hunter said, "He is very stubborn."

Daggat's assistant floated next to him on the way out, "I have a list of good evolution candidates, whenever you are ready. Two of them even have one arm, if you get used to this… way of life."

"Later," He said.

Hunter was waiting for him outside the building. He was really big now. Four times Daggat's height. He had a cheeky smile.

"What?" Daggat said.

"Hmm?"

"You look like you have a secret."

"Oh… no secret." He grinned wider, "It's just… I'm level EIGHTTEEN now."

"WHAT!" Daggat checked his stats. Still fifteen.

"So is Anath and Klaw." He chuckled. "Hogo was worth a lot, and Elyndris ate his arm as soon as he died. You should have seen it. Willow tried to bite Hogo's corpse first, but was too slow."

Daggat's stump started to throb, "Where are the silver wolves?" Daggat pulled out a bottle of alcohol from the inventory and took a big swig. He noted that someone had placed his severed arm in the inventory.

"They're around. I'll take you to them. Should you be drinking?"

"What? It's for the pain."

While wandering towards the silver wolf camp, he crossed into the busy part of town. Humans were busy cleaning debris, speaking with the new batch of humans, or taking stock of the damage.

Daggat waved at them as each noticed him. One at a time, they stopped working and just stared at him.

There was a tension in the air that dragged Daggat and Hunter to a stop. Daggat chuckled nervously.

"Why are they looking at us like that?" he whispered.

"You had a powerful effect on them, Dag. When you changed… the battle shifted. They gained hope. Most attribute the battle to you."

"That's ridiculous. YOU won that battle, Hunter. How did you do that with your spell?"

The oni blushed, "I don't know. Ivory said something about wind pressure and backdraft or something."

One of the humans marched up to them. It was Pat, on her feet and looking well. She had a baby in one arm and a box in the other.

"Morning," Daggat said.

"Daggat," She started. Pat looked exhausted, as though she had to force herself to talk. "As mayor of Harrowpine, it is my right to give you thanks. For leading my people through the storm in my stead."

"Oh, mayor? I kind of liked Chief." Daggat said.

She ignored him, "This is a small token of our thanks."

She presented him with the box. He floated it over to his hand. It was heavier than it looked. Using telekinesis, he flipped open the lid.

Gold jewelry. A couple of earrings, a thick necklace, and two bracelets. With them was a handful of glimmering gems. They did not radiate any specific essence.

"Oh, wow. Thanks! But… two bracelets? Bit insensitive, don't you think?"

Pat's face turned red, "Thank you again. For saving our town… what was left of it, anyway."

The box disappeared into the group inventory. "No trouble at all. Now, please excuse me, I have someone to yell at."

He waved at other humans who had gathered; some cheered his name, others grunted. Most were too tired to react.

The silver wolves were together, having taken up position on their own side of the village. They were laughing and drinking. An orc was spread open over a large fire, roasting slowly. Three other wolves were chewing on the bones of some creature.

It was good to know that the silver wolf goblins reveled just as well as the head takers had.

"Daaag!" Willow slurred, seeing him. "You lived!"

Daggat threw a rock at him telekinetically.

"Ow, why?"

Bragg pointed and laughed.

"'Cause you're a damned coward!" Daggat yelled at him.

"What?" Willow looked hurt.

"You fucker, I LOST AN ARM. Most of my party almost died. We fought tooth and nail against Hogo… and when did you decide to help? AFTER WE HAD PRACTICALLY BEATEN IT."

"I told you not to fight it…"

"And I did anyway. Guess who's dead? NOT ME. If you had actually helped, then maybe I could flip you off with both hands right now."

"Daggat, calm down, you might upset the wound," Hunter said.

Daggat's tone switched back to normal, "Oh, sure, just… let me yell at these guys for a moment." Daggat turned back towards them and continued in a furious voice, "Bragg, you stop laughing. You're on my shit list too."

Ivory approached while transforming into humanoid form.

"Told you he'd be mad. In my defense, I was building the spell. Takes a bit of time."

"You saved Anath at one point, so you're fine," Daggat said.

"Daggat, we're goblins. Scavengers. What did you think we were going to do? Throw ourselves into danger? We play it safe."

"So, you'd just let MY party get hurt then?"

"You did that to yourselves. I wanted us to run."

Daggat glared at him, "You saved my life once. For that, I am thankful. But you are not living up to the image I had of you."

Willow widened his arms. "Well, I am sorry to disappoint. Unlike some people, I can't afford to throw my life away. I have people depending on me."

Daggat drained the last of his bottle, "Oh yeah? What, more gremlins that you drop off on the nearest human's doorstep?"

Willow's trident popped in his hand, "You better shut your mouth."

Bragg stepped forward, "Whoa, whoa. We don't need to fight. Look, kid, you don't know anything about Willow. So just leave it."

Hunter put a large hand in front of Daggat, "Come on, Daggat, let's go find the others."

"Fine, fine," Daggat said, "Let's go."

"You know what, it was stupid coming here. We're going to go on ahead… we'd hate to slow you down with our cowardice." Willow said.

"Fine," Daggat yelled after him as Hunter gently pulled him away, "We don't need you to get there."

Daggat flipped him off with his missing hand. He could feel it; that was what was important.

"Daggat, what was that?!" Hunter asked when they were far off.

"Sorry, they just pissed me off. Swooped in at the end of the fight… then tried to steal the experience too. Bastards."

"They did fight off most of the orcs."

"Oh. Those the orcs that are fleeing towards our manor? Great."

Ivory ran up behind them and stopped.

"Hey, sorry about them."

"Is that how they usually do things? Wait until it's 'safe' before acting?"

"Well, yeah. Most adventurers do play it safer. Though… I think he was mad at you for not running when he said to. But we did come here to help you!"

"'Cause you thought I was a weak gremlin," Daggat mumbled.

"You should be, though. You should only be level three or four. Not fifteen. You are fifteen now, right?"

Daggat nodded. She did have a point. But… it was a stupid point. He had been gaining levels at an alarming speed, compared to what he thought was normal.

"Well, we aren't weak."

"I see that. But… you are inexperienced. No offense! Tell you what, let me stay behind. I can meet up with them later."

"And why do YOU care? No offense, but you don't seem like the type to help someone for no reason either. Otherwise, you would have told us how you evolved to a lycan by now."

"Think of it like an investment. Depending on how things go, maybe you could help me with something."

"What?"

"Depending on how things go." She repeated.

"Alright, whatever. As long as you help out Elyndris with magic stuff."

"I'll help to an extent. I don't plan on giving away my spell components for free. But I'll give a few pointers for being adventurers. Working as a team."

"We work as a team."

She gave him a lopsided smile, "Not really. You try, but… not really."

"Hey, we've been figuring this out on our own."

"And you've done a great job so far!" Her tail wagged.

Daggat eyed her, "Alright then. I'm going to chat with them. We'll leave in a week or so, if that's fine with you. And we need to make a stop on the way."

She gave him a thumbs up, then turned into a wolf and trotted off.

Daggat and Hunter found Anath and Klaw working over the corpses. She would slice off an ear and a toe, then Klaw tossed them into the tunnel in the middle of town. Elyndris was nearby, not moving.

"Daggat!" Anath squealed, then rushed to him. She was a half-second from hugging him before she held back. She had a concerned look on her face.

Daggat rolled his eyes, "It's fine. Look, it's hardly gone." He withdrew the severed arm from the inventory and telekinetically hovered it by the stump.

He used it to wave at Klaw as he approached. Elyndris stirred and then hopped over.

"You know that's really fucked up, right?" Klaw said.

"Yeah," Daggat grinned. "Where's Zuss?"

"Here." Zuss was lounging on the roof of a nearby building.

"CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?" Elyndris roared, "EIGHTEEN. EIGHT. TEEN. Oh, how's the stump?"

"Temporary." said Daggat, "Hey, listen, there's something I want to say. It's… uh… something Hunter got in my head a while back." The crew shifted around, generally uncomfortable with the sudden tonal shift. "So. We made it through. And we're stronger for it. I gotta say this before I talk myself out of it."

Klaw cut in, "Yeah, I'm level EIGHT-"

"I KNOW." Daggat took a deep breath, "Still. That was close. So I think that… from now on at least… that we. Ugh."

"Spit it out, goblin," Elyndris said.

"Take your time," Anath said.

"We should be more careful." Daggat forced out quickly.

Hunter scoffed, "You were just yelling at Willow about that."

"I know, but that's different. Look, we barely made it through. I thought Klaw died. I thought Anath was going to die. Maybe we shouldn't take risks like that."

For a moment, the crew was silent. Then Klaw spoke up.

He shook his head, "Nah, fuck that. You'll get the arm back."

Daggat continued, "Look, I hate to say it, but-"

"Why do you think I took Aura of Protection?"

"To protect us," Hunter said confidently.

"Nah. It's to stop you all from dying. Which is NOT the same. I took it because I know we're going to fight things that we can only beat if we fight like there is no tomorrow."

Daggat smiled at him, "There won't be if YOU are the one to die."

"Klaw is right. I don't want to slow down. Feels… cowardly." Zuss said.

"We grow so fast because we take risks others don't! Why stop now?" Elyndris added.

"We've had no choice so far." Daggat pointed out.

"If we only fight easy things… it might get boring," Anath said.

Daggat looked at Hunter. He would take Daggat's side, surely.

"I'm going to need to learn a lot more about medicine," he said.

Daggat thought he would be disappointed when Hunter took Klaw's side. Instead, he grinned like a gremlin.

He started to laugh, "Oh… I love you guys."

Anath made a slight gasping noise.

Daggat continued, "ALRIGHT! Then it is decided. Fuck slowing down! Throw all caution behind us. Upwards or death!"

"And we do not stop until the angels kneel!" Elyndris cackled.

Anath cheered. Eight limbs rose into the air.

"As long as we're not too not careful," Hunter said.

"Now that everyone's here, we should celebrate." Zuss said, "Or, at least start drinking."

"Already ahead of you." Daggat said, "So, a little bit of revelry, then we get back to work. What do you say?"

The answer was a resounding cheer.

The crew spent the next few hours deep into revelry. They drank and danced, cooked bits of orc and goblin and whatever else they could find.

Their post-battle celebrations were enough to win over some of the humans, who simply did not seem to be the revelry types.

At some point, Elyndris pulled Daggat to the side.

"What's up, wormy?"

"Don't call me that. Hey, listen, this is important. Focus."

Daggat looked at her intently, "Sure." Was there supposed to be two of her now?

The Assistant rolled his eyes and began to take notes.

"My repertoire of knowledge. It is fading. I need us to take a day, maybe two. I'll answer any question you can think of if I know it. Write it down. I don't know what I know until I am asked; there is simply too much."

"Wait, your knowledge is going away? Why?"

"I don't know. I think my soul is adapting to my new life. Some of it is gone already. I can almost feel the gaps."

"Yes. Let's do that then. Sooner or later. Then, we need to figure out these spirit mark things."

"Yeah… that's one of those things I think I should know more about."

Daggat sighed, "Great. First thing in the sober. Whenever that is."

He wobbled a bit on his feet while the others laughed at something Hunter said. His arm and cheek still throbbed, but the alcohol helped.

They still had so much to do. Had plenty to learn still. More friends and enemies to make. But, for now, this was a moment where they were completely safe. Those moments, Daggat realized, were getting rarer and rarer.

So, he let himself be swept away in the feeling. The next challenges are for future Daggat to worry about.
