Star Hawk Rises

CHAPTER 81 Epilogue: GOODBYE CRAIG!

I mentally threw the throttle all the way forward by routing power from the engines into the thrusters and launched the frigate out of the dry dock. I fired off a few positioning thrusters to make the ship slowly spin. Then I deactivated the gravity in the housing habitat, so I could watch the cop's slightest movement send them off into a new direction. I chuckled softly to myself as I saw them start bumping into each other, buildings and rubble, a couple even started heading towards the ceiling. Once I had finished rolling the ship over, I engaged the thrusters again to start heading out of the Solar System.

"My ship is already damaged, but I can't stay here, I don't know if anyone else is compromised. Best not to risk it." I muttered to myself as I looked at Clara on the cameras and wondered If she could fix the airlock while in transit.

"Well, there is only one way to find out" I declared as I switched the radio to a direct channel, selecting Clara.

"Clara, what ya up to?"

"Kenna? Uh, nothing, really I was just sitting here minding my own business hoping I wasn't sucked out an airlock or something!"

"Sorry about that, we were kinda boarded, I have them pinned down in the housing habitat, but I was wondering if you could repair the damage while we are in transit or do I have to go back to the dry docks for a new airlock?"

"What? No! I am not going out there! Activate the repair bots, they will take care of any damage and repair everything."

I shifted my attention away from Clara as I started thinking about how to activate the repair bots, not having remembered noticing any onboard. Weirdly, as I was thinking about activating them, I felt something turn on somewhere in the ship. I slowly glanced around the ship running through the cameras, but after I searched half the ship, and triple checked the airlock and the breached wall, I couldn't find anything walking about that wasn't human. It took me a few minutes of staring at the hallway until I noticed it. The wall was slowly assimilating the welded plate into the wall, making it a part of the wall.

"Damn, that's serious tech right there." I whispered as I stared at it in amazement.

After a few more moments of staring at it, I turned my attention to the airlock and watched it slowly rebuild itself and just simply sat there watching it, feeling my mind getting slowly blown. After a while, I noticed the reconstruction of the airlock suddenly sped up, causing me to glance at the wall and see it was already completed.

"This is next level!" I exclaimed as I turned my attention to the cameras and sensors, quickly noting that we had passed the perimeter and were clear to enter subspace whenever we wanted to. I glanced back moments later at the airlock, seeing it was complete and a system in the ship was asking me to pressurise the hallway, so I did. However, I maintained the emergency doors in case one of those cops wasn't in the housing habitat or managed to escape it. The doors were opened and then closed to allow my own security to move about the ship as they regrouped and turned a mess hall into their command centre for some reason, I suspected it was the food and drinks. The ship secure and back in working order once more, I turned my attention to the housing habitat to make sure they were all still stuck before focusing on the cameras and sensors. I activated the ship wide broadcast for everyone so I could make an announcement.

"Alright, ladies, gentlemen, and uninvited twerps, please put your tray tables in their upright and locked position because it is time for departure. Today the English clan has asked us to scout out a star system for them, they are hoping to move there. Our job is to fly in to scout it out, get information on resources and planets, see if any are hospitable for human life, then report back. We will be entering subspace momentarily, so buckle up and for the twerps in the housing habitat, I suggest you try sticking your head between your legs and kissing your bum goodbye… again."

I laughed when I saw a few of them panic, but I couldn't care less about them anymore, 'damn stowaways!' I muttered as I cut power to the thrusters and engaged the subspace drive, and felt the ship begin to descend, moments later the stars turned into streaks of light. I sat there staring out into the endless void of space as I began to wonder what the point of the Galactic Federation was? Why were they attacking and destroying worlds only to rebuild them, so many lives were lost for no better reason than to have fun at displaying their might. Why did I have a void pilot class instead of a pilot class, what was the difference? I let out a sigh, knowing I would not get the answers to these questions in the middle of subspace. During this time, my attention wandered to the cops floating around the housing habitat, and it occurred to me that I had a captive audience to pose questions to. I turned the ship wide broadcasting channel to the housing habitat only and started asking questions.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

"Hello, floating audience, how are you today?" I asked innocently.

"Go to hell, you evil bitch." one of them screamed out.

I quickly found George floating upside down with his arms crossed as he glared ahead of him, he looked grumpy. I decided to ask him the question that was on my mind.

"Hello, George, would you like to tell me why you are attacking me and my ship? I also don't understand why you are trying to arrest me, aren't cops in your country supposed to explain that before they try to arrest you?"

"I reserve the right to remain silent and request a lawyer." he replied simply.

"Uh huh" I said slowly before turning my attention to the other people in the room. "Okay, same questions to the rest of you, does anyone feel like answering them?"

They all remained silent and ignored me, I was about to give up and turn my attention elsewhere when the man floating near the ceiling finally spoke up.

"I was a detective in the Chicago Police Department. One day when I'm minding my own business, working a case. I get this order from my captain to be at an address at a certain time, apparently a fed wanted to talk to me about a federal case. So I show up, and it's some CIA guy with a badge and everything." before he could continue telling me his story, he was interrupted by one of the guys yelling at him.

"Will you shut up, Craig! Plead the fifth like the rest of us and read the room before you go giving away classified information!"

I saw the man named Craig slowly turning upside down as he rolled his eyes before continuing anyway.

"You realise we are cops, not soldiers, right? Plus, it occurs to me that we have been trying to arrest a foreign citizen outside our jurisdiction, which is on earth, not up here in space. Seriously, I can't even figure out why we were sent up here in the first place. Anyway, this moustache wearing humorless badge tells me I have been selected for a special task force and I would be sworn in as a federal agent, all I had to do was sign an NDA. I'm up here, so you know I did. Once it is signed, he puts me in a black-out car, and we drive for hours until we reach this warehouse at an airport. For the record, I knew it was an airport because I could hear the planes engines. Anyway, I am standing there waiting for what comes next, and these guys slowly get brought in one by one until we are all there standing around with our proverbial thumbs up our asses waiting for what happens next."

"Seriously, Craig, shut up!"

"Will you shut up yourself! I'm trying to tell a story here." I watched him let out a breath as he calmed himself before continuing. "Anyway, we are standing around, and then this guy walks in all uppity and rich swagger like. He shakes our hands one by one and when he shakes mine, a screen suddenly appears. He tells us we have all been initiated into the system that has been hidden on earth for centuries, and we are all now a part of the noble Washington clan. He then went onto a spiel about patriotism and that kind of stuff. I think he was trying to appeal to our sense of duty and honour or something. He then eventually got around to the punch line."

"Shut up Craig! This is your last warning!"

"What, are you going to shoot me? That's not very professional police of you to shoot a fellow police officer now, is it? Would make you a criminal, wouldn't it?" Craig spat back at the man that was starting to get on my nerves. "Anyway, if you are all done interrupting me. The punchline, was America had been secretly building an orbital space station and was about to bring it online when a rocket from Scotland, of all places, intercepted the Orbital Station and seized control. The Washington guy said it was rightfully his, and he wanted it back. The woman known as Kenna Mackenzie committed the act of theft against a foreign nation, and we were being sent up to arrest her and bring her back to face trial. However, we had to go undercover because apparently she had made deals with aliens and most likely was using them to protect herself. From there we mixed in with a common clan headed for England and made our way up to the station. And took a job as station cops. After that, you pretty much already know the rest."

The next thing I knew, there was a bang and Craig was leaking blood from his head. And my eyes shifted to the man that had been telling him to shut up.

"Damn it, Craig, I warned you! But no, you can't stop and think, maybe some of us used to be soldiers and were returned to active duty before we came up here with the orders to silence any leaks."

"Fuck, I can't believe you shot him" I whispered, feeling a little shocked.

I suddenly felt a jolt as the ship started ascending, stealing all my attention back to the outside cameras and the sensors as we surfaced at the edge of our destination. As the sensors scanned the star system, I couldn't help grinning, the preliminary scans were already showing a lot of resources in asteroids and a few planets. However, as the sensors did a second sweep, I started to notice things I didn't like, the star system was already occupied. However, it did not look like it was by a space fairing civilisation, which piqued my interest and I shifted the power to my thrusters and flew into the star system, angling the ship towards the habited planet.

"Well, I'll be damned, this planet has non-space fairing life on it," I whispered, completely forgetting the mic for the housing habitat was still turned on.

"So? Are you going to steal from them too?" the annoying voice asked.

"You know what, asshole, why don't you go screw yourself! I purchased the Orbital Station base with a fricken medium perk, you asshole Americans had nothing to do with it, and I'm sick and tired of you throwing your damn weight around, no one is impressed, I didn't steal anything and your dumb asses are clearly in the wrong but instead your buckling down and using your guns to prove you are right, why don't you just shut up!" I screamed at him before realising I may have overreacted and quickly turned the broadcast off.

"Aah, fuck my life, I think I need a therapist or something at this point," I whined.
