Zombie Bodyguard

Chapter 1377: A Test of Patience

From the start, Ai Wei harbored murderous intent, targeting vital spots with her strikes, and coupled with the sharpness of the Soul-devouring Blade, her attacks were truly fierce. However, Langde fought like a cornered beast, showcasing one hundred percent of his strength right from the start, moving much faster than Charlotte.

Moreover, he wouldn't just sit and wait for death. He had other plans in mind, believing that if he could capture Ai Wei alive and take her as a hostage, there would be a glimmer of hope for himself.

"Want to kill me? You'll have to catch up to my speed first," Langde grinned, baring his sharp vampiric fangs. His face twisted into a ferocious expression, completely at odds with his usual scholarly demeanor.

"Now it's my turn." Langde sneered coldly, flapping his bat wings, swooping low towards Ai Wei, his hands extending with pale but razor-sharp nails. After all, he was a seasoned Blood Clan Elder, and his speed was so quick that Ai Wei found it hard to keep up.

Nevertheless, not keeping up didn't mean Ai Wei was at a disadvantage. Facing Langde's attack aimed directly at her heart, she not only didn't dodge but moved forward to meet it head-on, slashing at Langde's neck with her blade.

Her approach was a life-for-life exchange, where a strike to crush her heart would be met with a slash to decapitate him. With the sharpness of the Soul-devouring Blade, decapitating Langde was more than feasible. Among the Blood Clan, breaking the heart or slicing off the head invariably spelled death.

The fierce fear the ruthless, and the ruthless fear those who disregard their lives. Ai Wei was fierce and reckless, her aura even more imposing.

Langde's heart shuddered, realizing his words hadn't suppressed her but instead intensified her killing intent. Nonetheless, as an experienced Blood Clan Elder, in the midst of the confrontation, he decisively flapped his bat wings, abruptly darting sideways.

Ai Wei swung her blade, narrowly missing Langde's back hem, slicing off a strip of fabric. At the moment she cut his hem, Langde, who had already dodged to the side, suddenly swayed his wings behind him, slashing towards Ai Wei's neck in their final fleeting interaction.

The Blood Clan's bat wings were vast and came with sharp hooked claws, serving as a horrifying weapon, fully capable of injuring a Blood Clan body. If Ai Wei was struck, even if not decapitated, she would be gravely injured.

This was the difference in capability; Ai Wei had only recently advanced to Elder level, lagging far behind mid-high level Elders in strength. Charlotte and others squinted, seemingly about to intervene to rescue her, knowing that Ai Wei's life was more critical than revenge.

But the next moment, she regained her focus. At the critical moment of life and death, Ai Wei forcibly twisted her body, barely escaping the vital point of her neck. Yet Langde's attack was swift and sudden; she avoided the vital spot, but her face was still slashed by the sharp hooked claws.

A long wound stretched from her face to the root of her ear, blood seeping from the cut, appearing genuinely shocking.

"Tsk tsk, what a shame for such a pretty face," Langde taunted nonchalantly after steadying himself, trying to provoke Ai Wei by touching upon a woman's paramount concern—her appearance.

He couldn't kill Ai Wei; if Ai Wei died, he wouldn't survive either. Only by capturing Ai Wei alive as a hostage could he have a chance of survival. But with Ai Wei wielding the Soul-devouring Blade, capturing her alive was no easy task, so he resorted to psychological warfare.

But Ai Wei's response disappointed him; she turned back around, letting the blood on her face flow without wiping it, her expression remaining utterly unfazed, her gaze still laced with consuming hatred.

What disappointed Langde even more was how the wound on Ai Wei's face healed rapidly, returning to its smooth and tender state in just a blink, the traces of blood adding a hint of wild allure.

The Blood Clan possessed self-healing capabilities, yet such a quick healing speed surprised Langde. He didn't know that Ai Wei was already a novice Elder and had consumed the blood of the Blood Angel, which contained zombie blood, thus inheriting some of the zombie's regenerative abilities.

"Lin Tian, Langde doesn't actually wish to kill Ai Wei. If you truly want to kill someone, you wouldn't bother with so much nonsense. Look at Ai Wei's expression; that's real killing intent," Zhang Lingyu whispered to Lin Tian, in a voice audible only to the two of them.

"You guessed correctly; Langde not only won't kill Ai Wei, but he must ensure she remains alive. He's aiming to capture Ai Wei alive as a hostage. This Elder isn't foolish," Lin Tian said with a faint smile.

Zhang Lingyu slightly tilted her head, glancing at the smile lingering on Lin Tian's lips, and remarked, "He's not foolish, and his plan is sound. But unfortunately, he encountered you, the Evil God, destined for death."

"Ha, you call me the Evil God, yet when faced with you, Lord Heavenly Master, is there truly a way to live?" Lin Tian also glanced at her, their eyes meeting, seemingly understanding each other's thoughts.

Langde's eyes flickered; he slowly retrieved an object from behind him, resembling a short staff, entirely black, topped with a bat. The bat's wings formed sharp blades, and the staff bore blood-red patterns resembling blood slots.

It was a short staff weapon, one Lin Tian had seen before. The Blood Clan appearing at Fanyin Temple used such a weapon. But before the Soul-devouring Blade, the bat short staff was clearly outclassed. Even a high-grade version of Langde's bat short staff could not compare to the Soul-devouring Blade.

Langde obviously understood this, realizing the bat short staff couldn't withstand the Soul-devouring Blade. He flapped his bat wings, unexpectedly starting to circle the scene.

He rapidly moved around Ai Wei, who followed him in motion. She was in the inner circle, with a smaller radius, so she barely kept up with the speed.

But barely keeping up means barely; experts can spot the flaws, especially sly old Langde, who seized any moment when Ai Wei's movement faltered to suddenly strike, whipping the bat short staff to target Ai Wei's vulnerabilities.

But Ai Wei relied on the sharpness of the Soul-devouring Blade to rescue herself in critical situations. Both moved swiftly, quickly exchanging blows, each strike fleeting, the rapid movements stirring fierce air currents, kicking up dust and dry grass, forming a large and small tornado.

The two tornadoes occasionally collided, sometimes separated, appearing as if they were locked in a stalemate. But Lin Tian knew that both were waiting for an opportunity.

Langde awaited Ai Wei's major flaw, then effectively capturing her. And Ai Wei hadn't yet shown her trump card; she was waiting for Langde to reveal his greatest weakness because she knew the gap between them, knowing she only had a ten percent chance of winning, requiring a precise strike.

Among the Blood Clan, speed was one of their greatest abilities. Whoever couldn't endure would become the loser. Without external pressure, Langde could unleash his force, and Ai Wei would surely lose. But in specific circumstances, they were in a stalemate.

"Here we go!" Lin Tian's eyes narrowed slightly, suddenly speaking.

In the scene, after just exchanging blows, Langde separated and, instead of resuming his previous circling, suddenly threw the bat short staff in his hand. With immense force and close proximity, the staff nearly instantly reached Ai Wei's heart.
