In the hollowed out trunk of one of the great trees a beast lay. It was not overly large when compared to most beast lords, it was around the size of a small horse. The beast in question was originally a beaver, yet along the way it had been forced out of the water, unable to compete with the stronger beasts that called the rivers and lakes home.

With its most recent evolution into a lord the beaver had forgone the last attachments to the water and chosen to turn arboreal. It still kept its long flat tail and its signature sharp teeth, but its paws, previously well suited for swimming, now focused on cutting, specifically cutting through wood.

It now made its nest within the great trees of this region.

The giant beaver was relaxing in its home, content to spend the morning in peace. It had just had a successful hunt the previous day so it was in no shortage of food currently. And with the constant rain that refused to stop, the region that it thought it knew so well was starting to change. And change had never been a good sign for this beaver.

Still whilst in its nest it knew that it would be safe, its presence was extended, showing its claim on the area. Whilst it knew that it would be no match for a stronger beast lord the beaver believed that's its presence alone would deter any beast in the previous evolution. For what kind of crazy beast would dare challenge a foe that is significantly stronger than it?

Well it turns out that the answer to that question is both a dragon and a leopardkin.

A spear of void shot forth, instantly covering the distance between Violet and the snoozing beaver. Its sharp point pierced deep into the beast hide, exploding with a muted boom and severely wounding on not its legs.

An instant later Luna stepped out of the void, her swords of ice already falling down, her strike aimed at the beast head. Saddly even though this beast is a weak lord, it is still in the fourth tier.

The beaver spun around, its flat tail sweeping upwards whilst bark like armour began to cover the beast hide. The tail impacted with the falling swords, deflecting them and sending Luna staggering backwards.

Completing its rapid spin the beast dove forwards, intending to capitalise on Luna's poor footing, yet when it swiped its claws at her, her figure seemed to shimmer and split in two. One moved forwards whilst the other moved to the side, the claw tore through the one moving forwards. Only for the figure to scatter into nothingness whilst the other figure avoided the charging beast.

Halting its dash forward the beast turned to charge once more, but was forced to block as a barrage of void bolts rained down on it. The flat tail intercepted the barrage, thick bark coating the limb and being shredded by each successive impact. Yet it did its job and prevented any from getting through to damage the body of the beast.

But just as the beaver was about to lower its tail a spear of void punched straight through the lingering defences and managed to pierce through the tail, stopping with only a couple inches emerging from the other side.

Then the spear exploded.

A chunk of the tail simply ceased to exist.

In a fit of rage and pain the beaver held nothing back. Shards of bark flew forth at its attackers, forcing both girls to dodge and block.

Not all of the projectiles were avoided, leaving nasty cuts on Luna and cracked scales on Violet.

Still the companions did not falter. Luna appeared once more besides the beast, the air itself seemed to freeze, the rain outside halted its fall. As time itself seemed to freeze the beaver lord found itself slowed dramatically, it could still move, but it was too slow to avoid the incoming attacks.

Outside of the bubble of frozen time Violet had been casting void cannon and it was now ready to fire.

As Luna delivered progressively stronger strikes with each blow she landed, she subtly moved to one side as she tried to freeze its feet to the floor, immobilising it temporarily.

Then she allowed the moment of frozen time to unfreeze. The rain stayed falling once more and a blast of void as wide as a barrel impacted the frozen beaver.

With a thud, the headless body of the defeated beast lord collapsed to the ground.

Upon reading that final line Violet excitement bubbled up, unable to be contained. She had worked hard to get to this point, fought against countless creatures, and survived them all. Her only moment of hesitation was erased when she felt Luna's joy bubbling through the bond too, evidently she had also received her own good news.

Sharing a look between each other they couldn't help but smile. And after Violet gave her companion a. Hearty head bump into Luna's chest the two exited from the battered interior of the tree.

Walking out they were greeted by Rhyana and Susan, who had stayed outside and not gotten involved in the battle. It did take some convincing from the companions side, but eventually they agreed to let them take the fight themselves.

So with the group once more back together they started making their way back towards their temporary base.

It did not take them all too long to return, and when they did the two companions waisted no time, immediately settling down a short distance from each other.

Looking over at Luna Violet spoke up. "Good luck on your advancement, I'll see you on the other side."

Luna too smiled over at her companion, her excitement bubbling up inside. She was naturally excited to see what class advancements she might see, but she was also quite excited to find out what new form Violet might turn into. "And the same to you, looking forward to seeing what new form you will have once this is all over."

And just like that the two of them settled down, opened up the system and proceeded with their respective goals.
