Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 82: Across the Void (6)

As Violet watched the hoard of beasts turn and flee a deep sense of satisfaction welled up within her. She knew that it was because of her defeating the king that caused it, and in turn had potentially saved the lives of most, if not all of the beasts that were following her through this strange place they found themselves in.

Some of the hoard did remain despite their comrades turning tail and running though so the fighting did still continue for a little while. Long enough for Violet to make her way back to the group, and more importantly back to Luna's side.

"Good job keeping the group alive." She said with a quick bump of her head to Luna's side.

With a tired smile she turned to face Violet. "And good job dealing with the big guy. Don't know how much longer we would have been able to hold on if they would have kept comming."

"Well it was a good fight, but I don't know about you. But I need a rest after that. Seems like we won't be getting interrupted again any time soon." Then glancing around at the rest of the beast that still stood she noticed that their numbers had dropped again.

Now only 16 beasts remained alive. But considering the shear number of corpses that surrounded their haggard group it was impressive that they managed to slay that many with so few losses. 'Guess this is a true gauntlet that only the strong can, or will survive.' Though the dragon.

Still she was tired and decided to just plop down on the ground right then and there. Seeing this most other beast followed suit. It seemed like they were all quite tired after that prolonged battle. Luna naturally lay down on Violet and snuggled into her side, a wing extended over her and together they rested.

After a few moments of peace Violet did let the building notifications come through. But after seeing the wall of notification about slain beasts of all kind she mentally adjusted it to only view the king and the total number of foes slain.

She was quite happy with the progress that she had made ever since this whole event started. She would never have imagined leveling up so many times in such a short time frame.

Violet did wonder what she was meant to do with the couple of skills that were sat at max level though. She instinctively felt that something could be done about them, but she wasn't really sure exactly what. Plus she definitely didn't have either the brain power or time to do anything about that currently.

So opting to just put that out of mind for the time being Violet instead focused on resting and recuperating for the time being.

[Time Remaining - 2hrs 43min remaining]

They rested up for a while longer but with the timer continually counting down none were willing to waste what little remained. So reluctantly Luna and violet slowly got to their feet with only minor grumbles, their bodies hurt, they were tired and all they really wanted to do was sleep for a week. Yet they refused to do so, after all the work that they had put into this so far it would be such a waste to give up so close to the end.

Seeing the dragon and strange two legged creature stand up, the rest of the beasts also slowly rose to their own feet. None were in great shape either but just like Luna and Violet, all the assembled beast knew what needed to be done.

So collectively they rose.

Slowly the group once more continued onwards.

They were in no rush to reach the end of the island as it could well mean more combat, but at the same time they did not dally. Simply moving forward at a steady pace to stretch out their sore muscles.

Once they reached the far end however they had to wait for a little bit for the mana string to once more switch its polarity to allow their passage. Once it was possible to cross Violet dove forward, her personal army hit on her heels.

For the next few islands they thankfully had no surprise ambushes, or any combat at all really. It seemed like all of the beasts on the surrounding islands had fled after the massive battle. Something that they were all quite grateful for as it gave them more time to recuperate their reserves.

Time continued to pass as island after island was crossed. The various islands were a obstacle just as much as the beasts had been on this final stretch. More and more frequently they had to go a long way around to avoid a particularly nast island. Not because of the beasts inhabiting them, but because of the nature of the island itself. Well maybe partially because of the beasts that lived there but still.

They encounterd giant floating islands of pure fire with no solid ground. Poisonous swamps that looked deadly enough to kill within minutes, a island that was entirely water where frightening shapes could just be made out moving beneath the surface. They also spotted an island of shadows which no beast present complained about avoiding, they all remembered the horrors that called that domain home.

Attacks on their group did eventually resume as they got closer to the end of this strange domain. Thankfully however, the intensity never reached the state of continual skirmishes. It was limited to intermittent battles and ambushes.

Not to say their weren't any hard fought battles, but compared to the horde they had battled earlier it was quite manageable for the now experienced group.

The coordination that the group showed only continued to improve, a level of trust had been fostered during their journey across the void. Whilst it would be a stretch to say that they had become friends, after battling side by side a level of trust and respect had definitely been developed. This respect was especially true for the dragon leading them.

All members of the group had witnessed her climactic battle with the behemoth and the resulting route of their foes after her victory. That coupled with her continual guidance through the maze of islands led them to show considerable respect towards the young dragon that fearlessly lead from the front.

Eventually the cohort did arrive at that final island and crossed that final gap to arrive in the final domain of this central valley. What greeted them was a lush jungle, towering trees welcomed them whilst vines and undergrowth simultaneously blocked their path forward.

And in the flickering shadows of the early evening light movement could just be made out.

Taking a moment to gather themselves the group of once desperate beasts readied themselves for yet another gauntlet.
