Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 81: Across the Void (5)

Luna's spear darted forwards instantly killing one of the many beast charging towards them. The group of beasts that had followed them so far was managing to hold their own currently.

Bodies were truly beginning to pile up around them but they acted as a barrier to slow down the ever encroaching foes. Luna was a reaper on the front lines, she dashed around reinforcing any friendly that was looking to be getting bogged down.

Only 2 beasts so far had not needed her help at all, this naturally being both the alpha wolf and the giant trunked beast. Those two were acting as bulwarks of violence, their might was unquestionable. From the rapid and vicious blows of the wolf that tore any opponent to shreds in moments. To the ponderous but inevitable blows of the giant.

Any foe that got too close to them soon learnt the error of their ways.

No it was the other beasts that lacked their pure strength that Luna focused her attention on, diving from hot spot to hotspot. She reaped lives in the dozens, yet the beasts never stopped comming.

It was strange, she had never seen any creature act like this. And the beasts themselves… they were lacking. Not just in strength, for they were undoubtedly considerably weaker than any beast should be at their level. No it was their intelligence that was truly lacking.

Not a single beast she had fought so far had a spark of awareness in its eye, they were all glassy eyed and unaware. She could only assume that they were all under the influence of the behemoth that Violet was currently in battle with.

Regardless, this was a definite boon for her side as weak and dumb foes throwing themselves at you was manageable… for now at least. She just hoped that when Violet won her fight the beast would regain their senses and flee, she didn't want to have to face this onslaught of the foes became intelligent.

**

Violet dove to the side as the king stomped down once more sending a fresh wave of spikes in her direction. She countered with a spear that dug into the already gaping wound on its front leg.

The muted boom as the spear exploded from within was like music to her ears, only enhanced by the cry of pain the king let loose a moment later. Diving back in once more she raked her claws back at the same spot, whilst she again failed to pierce the bone she felt the risistance falter slightly.

It would seem that continually aiming for this one spot was working out so far.

This continued as Violet would dive in to deliver what damage she could, before having to flee backward to avoid the retaliatory strike. The kings response tended to arrive in the form of earthen spikes or a stomp from one of its undamaged legs.

It was here that the beasts immense size was its true downfall. For whilst it may be fast for its size, for someone like Violet it was more than manageable.

As this was going on she would periodically pepper the beast face with spears and bolts, the king would in turn either block with a wall or simply tank the damage. By now the beasts hide was littered with craters and was seeping blood from a hundred wounds. Whilst individually these would not be worrying, added together. Well death by a thousand cuts was a saying for a reason.

The beast looked to be in a sorry state bisually. Yet Violet knew that it could stil take a considerable amount of punishment before its injuries became truly life threatening. The void cannon blast she unleashed at the start of the fight was still the most significant wound she had dealt, and she knew that she would need it again if she wanted to end the fight in a reasonable time frame.

Glancing over at the ongoing battle she caught sight of Luna dashing through the hoard slaughtering her foes with ruthless efficiency, seeing this filled Violet with a giddy sense of excitement. After all it was not often that one was able to battle a true hoard of beasts.

Her attention was forcefully brought back to her current battle when a large chunk of stone struck her neck painfully. Letting loose a growl she stepped forward and appeared by the wounded leg once more. This time instead of her claws she used her jaw, with crushing force she snapped down on the now exposed bone and was rewarded with a satisfying SNAP!

Ripping her head back she finally tore off the lower part of its leg with glee.

She was still forced to dodge away as a foot was already flying down towards her. Yet she was elated and began to once more summon the magic circle for her void cannon.

Now she just needed to knock the beast over and she had a good chance to finally put an end to the beast.

Once the spikes stopped appearing she dive back in now attacking the second front leg on the same side intending to repeate her actions.

It took some time but she soon managed it once more, the lower half of the behemoths leg was torn away to the bellows of pain of the king. With excitement she launched a barrage of bolts towards the beasts face, it tried to block them but the sheer number caused the king to step back. Only it was still missing its legs and stumbled.

This stumble turned into a full collapse as Violet's barrage never ceased during this.

BOOOOM!!

The entire insane shook as the king collapsed to the ground, Violet nearly lost her balance and she was prepared for it. The other beasts participating in the main battle were sent sprawling. Only Luna managed to stay upright thanks to a quick warning from Violet.

However, she could spare no more thoughts as her attack was ready and she refused to let this chance go.

Stepping forward she appeared right before the beast head, on the side that was missing its eye. And unleashed her prepared cannon at point blank range.

She aimed for the already dedicated eye socket. And struck true.

A barrel sized hole was punched through the beasts head and out the back of its skull. The king shuddered for a moment, then grew still.

Feeling the awaiting notification Violet grinned in triumph. Then looked over at the ongoing battle where the sorted beasts looked to be frozen in shock.

ROOARRRR!

A victory cry burst free as Violet once more sent a wave of her aura flying out. It covered the distance and bolstered her allies and demoralised her foes.

Then as if in response to her victory a secondary pulse of mana erupted from the island itself and before her eyes she watched as all of the connected islands mana strings reversed their polarity.

Any beast still in transit between islands was promptly sent flying into the void below. The beasts in the island, already terrorized by the meat grinder before them and just witnessing their leader be slain by a dragon. Made the only logical decision left to them.

They fled.
