Finn had no idea how much comfort these words brought to Syl. All this time, her body felt heavy at all the uncertainties happening around her.
To know there was a place where she could go no matter what felt like lifting a heavy burden from her shoulders.
Before this, it felt like a single mistake would ruin not just hers, but her family's lives, after all.
The two of them looked at each other, as if memorising the other's face. Sadly, the Town was not too big, and before they knew it, it was time to part.
The carriage stopped just a couple of meters away from the gates. "Ah, time for me to jump down," Finn said with a sigh, standing up.
Sylwen watched as he opened the door and prepared to go down in that new appearance of his.
Her eyes fixed on his wide shoulder, and then to his sinewed arms that held the jamb of the door. When his hands let go, it would be a while before she would see him again.
Before he jumped down, his name escaped her lips. "Finn," she called, her voice softer than usual.
He blinked, turning, and his eyes widened when he felt her lips on the side of his face, slightly brushing against his cold lips.
He gaped, but sadly, his hands had already let go.
She smiled. "See you soon."
…
The carriage traveled on, and Sylwen looked out the window, watching the scenery outside pass by quickly.
Sylwen rested her chin on her palms, and her cheeks were red.
No wonder Finn did it. It felt nice.
And it was nice to see his flustered reaction.
A smile graced her beautiful face.
She wondered when she could do it again.
…
Back in Lotus Town
A silly smile was also plastered on a certain redhead's face.
Then, as he turned a few corners and passed a few streets, he discreetly, bit by bit, removed his disguise.
By the time he reached the Adventurer's Restaurant, Finn had already gotten rid of the wig and makeup, though the grin on his face was still large.
Leiah and the others were in the restaurant as well. Even Victor and Reesa were there.
In fact, he didn't make clear plans to meet up with any of them. However, when the real guests appeared earlier than usual, they knew he should've gotten out then.
So…when he did not, they thought that either he was trapped hiding inside the palace or was already in the dungeons.
The group was actually in the restaurant making plans on how to rescue him from possible imprisonment.
"Should we get the guild master to help?"
"How? This is a political move in the end. Our positions are too weak, even together."
"Poor guy might be starving now. He liked to eat so m—"
The door opened, and they blinked.
This was the supposedly imprisoned Finn, arriving at the restaurant safe and sound, complete with an idiotic smile on his face.
"YO!" he said, unaware of how worried his friends had been the whole night!
They all stood up and went to him, dragging him to a corner. "FINN!"
"You're alive!"
"Did they torture you?"
They were speaking in hushed tones, of course, but it was still startling. "Wha… why would they torture me?"
Looking at him like this, everyone heaved a collective breath of relief.
Reesa shook her head and looked at Finn, though. "You look happy," she pointed out. The party blinked.
"Did you find your sister?"
At first, they were a bit confused. They did not see a little girl with him.
"Yes, among a lot of other good things that happened," he said, gently patting the large body bag next to him.
"That's a big bag. Did you get a lot of treasure?!" they asked, leaning down at it.
Marcus couldn't help but poke at the bag, making Finn flinch away. "Be careful! That's my little sister!!"
"..."
"???"
…
A couple of minutes later, in one of the private rooms, the group stared at each other in silence.
This was broken by Victor, who narrowed his eyes at the egg—now arranged on a pillow over the coffee table.
"So let me get this straight: Your sister… is an egg."
Finn nodded. They looked at him oddly.
But of course not as oddly as Earth humans would've. After all…, it wasn't exactly unheard of in this world.
"Perhaps it's a half-sibling," Reesa said. "And one parent is a beastkin."
"Yeah, but halfkins can't transform. Only beastkins can."
"That's true."
Finn's lips twitched. Look at these guys, rationalizing all this craziness for him.
At this, he couldn't help but look at them solemnly.
"Guys." He said, their banters halting when they saw how solemn he was.
"Thank you," he said. "I owe you guys a lot."
When he said this, he was slightly bowing in their direction, and his heart filled with gratitude.
He made a mental note: When the Inn was big enough, he'd dedicate a few rooms that would prioritize them.
Syl's, too, of course. Hers would probably be the permanent house. He already had a preliminary design for her room in his mind, in fact.
She'd have a lovely area with indoor plants, a small lounge, a shelf—
Ahem
He realized he entered a daze, imagining what it would be like to permanently live with Syl, but he knew he was getting ahead of himself.
He cleared his throat. "Anyway, you guys deserve special treatment."
Seeing him like this made them all blush and feel awkward. "Yo, we didn't do anything!" Marcus said, playfully slapping his shoulder.
"You did everything, Finn," Leiah said. "We only tagged along at first."
Finn shook his head. Without them, he probably would not even dream of making it in time. He wouldn't have learned some of the etiquette and rules within the day, nor would he be able to disguise himself well. "Just remember, I am thankful.
"And you can treat the inn as your second home in the future."
