Chapter 223: Unhinged Researcher

The information section was the biggest, as even knowledge that might be considered useless was kept here. Failures that achieved nothing were also here because their foundational theories were simply too good to be lost to time.

As Liliana believed, just because one learned from failures didn't mean those failures had to come from them. Humans could observe those failures and make sure they didn't repeat the same mistakes.

Aegon and Liliana spent hours holed up in the Sixth Layer of the treasury, unraveling mysteries Aegon had never even thought existed.

The world he had been living in for years now felt foreign, yet at the same time much closer as he learned more about it. Knowledge of this scale wasn't present in his Opa's library.

Of course, Liliana helped him the most as she checked everything before he read it. There was simply no way she was going to let him read unknown dangerous texts, even if it put her at immense risk.

Aegon noticed how Liliana didn't seem to care about it even in the slightest. She actually felt happy to help him, even going as far as disturbing her own research for him.

He felt grateful for everything she was doing, especially since none of this concerned her. She did everything simply because she wanted to.

Shaking those thoughts off, he focused on finding something that might help in his mission. His main objective in coming to the treasury was that, after all.

Though this certainly wasn't a wasted trip even if he didn't find it.

"You have a perfect memory, right?"

He looked up from a thick, leather-bound book and answered her, "Yes. It's quite helpful."

"I know. I also have it," Liliana smiled and said. "But it's burdensome too."

"I can't disagree there," Aegon sighed. "That's why I developed selective memory."

"It took me some time for that," Liliana said as she stood up and showed him a thick book with very long pages, enough to be rolled up like a scroll. "It'll be helpful now."

Aegon set aside the book he was reading and went towards her. Looking at her with questions swirling in his eyes, he asked, "Did you find something?"

"Yes. I think this is exactly what you've been looking for," Liliana nodded and said. "It's the journal of a crazy researcher. A genuinely insane researcher. Everything he wrote in there is in runes."

"Huh? How did he even manage to do that?" Aegon exclaimed in shock. "It's impossible."

The world actively erased the existence of runes, so he couldn't believe someone had actually managed to write a book with them. Worse, it had lasted for so long without any signs of being damaged.

It changed his view of the world yet again.

"I thought the same before looking at this," Liliana said as she began to walk out of the information section. "Tell me, what's one thing you learned after spending so much time here?"

Aegon followed her while thinking about her question seriously. Considering it for over a minute, he answered, "Nothing in this world is absolute."

"Yes. The more you learn about the world, the more you realise how flawed and full of loopholes it is," she nodded. "What we thought was absolute isn't absolute. It's just that we haven't found the flaws in it."

Aegon stared at the thick book and said, "And this guy found that loophole?"

"Perhaps. Or he might have used ingredients that can resist the world's erosion," Liliana said as she found a wooden table and put the book on it.

Even years of isolation couldn't make this place dirty, so everything remained pristinely clean. Even the wood they sat on was in perfect condition, which prompted Aegon to look into it, and he couldn't help but sigh.

Noticing his expression, Liliana smiled and said, "Things here aren't ordinary. They're here for a reason, even if it's something as ordinary-looking as this wood. Don't ponder over minor details."

Aegon nodded and sat on the chair while she took the seat before him. His gaze remained focused on the book, but he didn't touch it without her permission.

The book itself was covered in a thin cover, with pages a metre in length. It smelled of Dustberry, which was a poisonous fruit and whose tree produced very durable wood.

"This researcher's name was Omer, and he lived around fifteen thousand years ago," Liliana said. "He was a Soul Cultivator like you, and a very high-ranked one at that. I knew of him even before this, so I can say he was one crazy man."

"Let me guess, this insane guy tried to mess with soul stuff?" Aegon asked.

"A Soul Cultivator with an insane curious mind. An inevitable outcome," Liliana shrugged. "This is just one of many things he worked on. The only difference being that he died while working on this."

"Playing with the soul is never safe," Aegon shivered, thinking of the vast Main Consciousness.

"Yes, he died while doing that, but he left behind everything he found in this," Liliana said. "And he was researching the same thing as you. Using the World Essence directly, like Soul Cultivators do."

She sighed and continued.

"The problem is that the insane man wrote everything in runes, so now we'll have to first translate it all to know his findings. Even with our perfect memory, it's going to be a hassle. I checked inside, and there are many runes that I'm unaware of."

"Hmm, that shouldn't be an issue," Aegon said, making her raise an eyebrow. "As long as you can understand the meaning and write it down, I can help you decipher all the runes."

Liliana stared at him for a bit longer before nodding. She didn't ask how he would do that and simply trusted him on it.

"There is one more problem," she said. "The runes aren't working because we are currently in this domain. We don't know the consequences of taking it out."

"So we're spending days stuck here?" Aegon understood her meaning instantly. "We'll have to go outside for supplies though, since we're mundane here. Heck, we might even need to camp here."

She chuckled softly and said, "I don't have any issue with that. What about you?"

"Spending time with the most accomplished creator while studying some unhinged researcher's journal?" He grinned. "Yes, I'm welcoming those days."
