10x Rewards: Becoming Invincible With My Sign-in System

Chapter 241: Opinions

By the time Aegon reached home, it was already evening. The Twilight sky above him lied about the time, but people had developed ways to learn about it.

Xiu welcomed him with open arms and gushed over him as if he was a kid, which he probably was in her eyes.

She had prepared dinner for him, which was far from normal as always, but Aegon wasn't even surprised to see that. He had long gotten used to his aunt's habits.

Once it was done, they played some random games while laughing with each other. It had been a long time since they spent time with just the two of them, so they found it even more blissful.

At the end of it, they found themselves under the Azure Beat Tree, with Aegon receiving a lap pillow from Xiu as she gave him a head massage.

'I needed this.'

He hadn't even realised that until now. The whole month-long study, then forging, all of it exhausted him from the inside out. While the hot springs helped, they couldn't be compared to this motherly affection that Xiu showered him with while massaging him.

All of his fatigue seemed to wash away under her soft hands.

"This is the best," Aegon hummed in joy and said. "When did you even learn massaging?"

"When I saw you working really hard. I just knew you'll need it," Xiu chuckled and said. "It's helpful, right?"

"It definitely is."

If Xiu announced she had a system like him, he wouldn't even be surprised. She had so many skills in her arsenal that it was ridiculous. And most of those skills were aimed at helping him or making his life easier.

"Want to talk about it?" She asked.

Aegon hummed in response. He already knew this topic would eventually come up, but he wasn't nervous or anything. He never had those feelings before Xiu because he knew she would understand him.

"What do you truly think of her?" Xiu asked softly, as her fingers passed through his long silky black hair.

"Impressive!"

He smiled and replied, eyes still closed as he enjoyed the massage.

"She's very calm and composed. And she doesn't lose those easily, so her judgement is right almost every time. It's scary how accurate she gets, not to mention how quickly she understands things. I find that soothing."

Xiu rolled her eyes and knocked on his head lightly. "Don't say the obvious. I knew you two would like each other a lot already. Tell me what you think about the incident sixteen years ago?"

Aegon remained silent for a while before shrugging.

"Uhh, am I being a bad person if I say things blew out way too much?"

Xiu smirked and said, "Explain, Little Sun."

"I mean, all the blame goes to the demons. They did everything that took Grandma's life, but we're blaming everything on ourselves and hurting each other. It's kinda ridiculous."

Xiu burst out laughing hearing him and said, "If Opa was here, he would spank you."

"As if!"

Xiu shook her head and said, "You really have a unique way of thinking."

"I think it's pretty normal," Aegon said. "What Senior did was wrong, but I don't blame her. I don't think anyone does except for herself."

Xiu nodded slightly and rested her back on the tree.

"Her miscarriage brought changes to her, but she didn't notice it herself. It was bound to happen since Brother was like a pillar of support for her."

She looked down at Aegon's face with a strange expression and said.

"I want to blame her, but I don't think I have that right. You have it, but you don't blame her. Actually, that might be the reason why her self-guilt grew so much. Nobody blamed her for that, while Brother suffered alone because of that."

Aegon nodded and said, "As for your brother, am I supposed to blame him for choosing fifty million lives over mine? If he hadn't chosen that day, all those precious lives would have been lost."

That was where Aegon was truly conflicted. On one hand were his selfish desires where he prioritised his loved ones over everyone else, but then his humane side woke up.

Would he have accepted a father who let fifty million people die for him? Was his life more precious than all of them combined?

He didn't think so.

But then again, maybe he did.

Humans were complex creatures, and Aegon was experiencing it firsthand. That was why he couldn't blame Arthur for his choice.

He was forced into a situation where he had to choose, and he did.

"He chose his duty over family, so I can understand everyone's reaction, but I don't think he's the one to blame for everything that happened that day. All of it should be pinned down on the demons, yet we're just hurting each other."

By the end of his words, Aegon was huffing in anger. Perhaps it was because he remembered how much Arnold was hurt by all of this.

He pretended to hate his son, but anyone could see that wasn't the case. In fact, he was hurting every day to be away from his only son. He lived in agony because of that one decision.

Of course, Aegon couldn't even blame his grandmother. Even if he could, he wouldn't, as that woman was the reason for his current life. If she wasn't there, he would be in the hands of the Demon King and living like a puppet yet again.

Thinking of that, a shiver went down his spine, which Xiu noticed immediately but didn't voice out.

"Xiu, was my grandmother really that impulsive?" Aegon asked. "I still can't understand how she would take such a big decision which would hurt the two most important people of her life. It doesn't make sense."

"You're asking the wrong person," Xiu shrugged in response. "I never understood Mom truly. She was like an open book that anyone could read, except there were countless hidden sections that few could open up."

Her hands continued their work on his head as she said.

"For your answer, she was impulsive, but she still thought a lot before taking such a big decision. I think she was just tired of the Augustus family despite the fact she loved it so dearly."

Aegon couldn't argue against that. Anyone would get emotionally tired after seeing so many of their loved ones become martyrs. Being family of an Augustus wasn't an easy task.

"And all of it broke when she almost lost her grandson. She snapped and chose a different upbringing for you so you don't become another self-sacrificing Augustus. Or maybe she just wanted to make sure we're all alive."

Aegon opened his eyes and looked at her with questions swirling in his bright golden eyes.

Xiu chuckled softly and said.

"One thing we all have in common is bad temper. Really bad temper. And don't think I'm joking at all. It doesn't matter who you take, be it Brother or Sister, Opa or even me. We all had such terrible tempers that it was a miracle we all coexisted."

Aegon listened to her attentively.

"Mom was very perceptive of her surroundings, so I think there's more to her actions than what we see on the surface. Maybe she wanted to distract us this way so that we keep ourselves alive. She bound us to you. She forced us to choose between revenge and you."

He finally began to understand her implications.

"If she hadn't asked for that promise, I can assure you that half of us would have gone to war with the demons to seek revenge. The anger and grief we felt on that day surpassed anything we've felt before, so I'm not even exaggerating. So she perhaps did this to restrain us in our own pain and also to give you a good life."

The more Aegon thought about it, the more plausible the theory seemed. The fact that Arnold got back on the path of revenge so soon after he got freedom from taking care of Aegon showed that Olena understood her family very well.

"She should have known that it would only delay it for a bit," he muttered. "She also didn't want House Valeria to attack the demons. I also refuse to believe that Auranyth actually didn't go berserk on the demons after Grandma's death. Dragons don't function like that."

His eyes lit up as he said, "She didn't want anyone to attack the demons. It's clear as hell. She knew something about them which scared even her. She knew something was wrong with them."

Xiu's eyes widened as she listened to his words. She hadn't thought of it like that, but now that Aegon pointed it out, she realised how odd the situation was.

Olena was practically assassinated by the demons, yet she actually made sure nobody took revenge on them.

Considering the nature of Valerians, it didn't sit well. Not at all.

That was the moment Xiu realised that even such a request which seemed selfish on the surface had many meanings.
