Chapter 242: Valeria's Prophecy

Aegon's mind was churning with theories as he tried to uncover the mysteries of Olena's intentions. He understood that she wanted everyone to stay away from the demons, but he couldn't understand why.

It simply didn't make sense.

He had seen House Valeria and also interacted with the Dragons. Most of them, the giant calamities, spent their time sleeping on Mount Cereberion as if their life's whole purpose was just to laze around.

But their temper was even worse than their laziness. They could erupt in anger in no time and cause pure devastation even for a small matter.

Perhaps that was why the world made them so sleepy.

How could Aegon expect the Dragon Queen herself to do nothing when the most important person in her life was assassinated?

She was powerful enough to erase most of the Mobius Alliance from the face of the Triana Continent and would only be stopped by the Demon King himself.

That raised another obvious question. Would an angry dragon care about some ants?

Aegon knew the answer to that already. That's what made him so confused about all of this.

"Grandma said something to the Dragon Queen during her death, right?" Aegon asked. "So she asked her to remain silent too? But why?"

"Now you're making even me confused," Xiu sighed. "But you're right. She definitely did this to make sure we don't go after the demons immediately after, and also so that we can raise you properly in peace."

"Perhaps there's more to that too," Aegon said. "She wanted me to grow up in peace. If we just see it from the surface, it seems like she was just tired of House Augustus and also cared for me, so she did that for my well-being. While that may be true, I feel there's more to it."

"Hmm, I think it's related to you being a Valerian, or should I say the last Valerian?" Xiu pointed out while her fingers worked around his head. "She was too desperate to continue the bloodline, which is too suspicious."

"Is it?" Aegon raised an eyebrow. "Everyone wants to continue their lineage, Xiu."

"Not me," she shrugged. "I'm the last, and since I'm not marrying or anything, my bloodline is dying with me."

'As if I'm letting that happen so easily, but that's a subject for another day,' Aegon rolled his eyes. "What I meant was that it isn't abnormal. The Valeria Bloodline is prestigious, and you can even say the best of all. She was just afraid of it disappearing. Wouldn't it be a waste?"

"You aren't understanding, Little Sun," Xiu sighed. "Mom was...scared. She rarely let it show as she didn't want to burden Dad or my brother, but I knew she was desperate and very scared seeing that her bloodline was going to die with her."

She pursed her lips and added in a low voice, "That's what prompted her to take such risks. She once told me that Ascension was very risky and there was a high chance that she'll die trying."

Aegon frowned. Now that certainly showed her desperation well.

"She loved her family a lot, Little Sun," she continued. "Enough to even fight her own house for us. She even threatened them that she'll destroy her cultivation along with her lineage, all so that she could be with us."

"Then it makes even less sense," Aegon felt his headache growing, though fortunately soft fingers reduced that. "She was willing to let go of that lineage for her family, but then she did the opposite."

Xiu remained silent for a while before saying, "There's a difference between those two. In the first one, she didn't pass their trials, so House Valeria still kept many secrets from her. But it was different when she passed and succeeded as the House Head."

"You mean...she learned something about our bloodline that made her desperate?" Aegon asked. "It makes sense then. Those Elders have been pestering me for those trials. Wait, is there something that binds me to that bloodline through those secrets?"

"You can be worry-free about that," Xiu chuckled. "In any case, want to call Rovan to make sure of our guess?"

Aegon wanted to argue that it was useless since the man wouldn't reveal secrets to him, even if he respected him because of his status. There were vows of House Valeria which kept their secrets guarded well.

Still, it was worth a try, so he connected the call through the communication stone. Soon, the man's calm voice came through it.

[Greetings, Young Master.]

"Hello, Uncle Rovan," Aegon smiled. "There's something I want to ask you. It's confidential, so I'm pretty sure you won't answer, but still throw some hints, okay?"

[Is it about the Previous Supreme?]

"Woah! You guessed it right!" He exclaimed lightly. "Yes. I recently learned about everything that occurred sixteen years ago. So now I'm full of questions."

[Haha, can't say I didn't expect this. Are you curious why House Valeria remained so passive despite our Supreme getting assassinated?]

Aegon hummed in response.

[You'll have to become the new Supreme then. I apologise, but I can't disclose that information.]

"Oh well, this at least confirms some of my hypotheses, so thanks," Aegon said. "As for becoming the new Supreme, I'm a little hesitant now. Will I be bound to our bloodline or something?"

[By some oaths or sorcery? Certainly not. Once you become the Supreme, there's nothing stopping you from breaking the old laws. But once you learn the secrets, you will wish to preserve this lineage yourself.]

"Any hints why?"

[I will give one. Should the Valeria bloodline be vanquished from a land, that land shall know no surviving life.]

Aegon frowned as a sudden pressure of responsibility seemed to break his back in half. Just then, Xiu's gentle and warm hands eased the burden as she smiled at him, her eyes full of love.

He felt himself relaxing under those eyes.

[That is all I can say, Young Master. Please don't take this lightly, as it is the truth. I can assure you of that, so it is my humble request that you cherish your life, not just for yourself but for everyone you cherish and love. For without you, they cease to exist too.]
