The chicken coop was delivered at noon. Lin Feng set it up in the yard, herded the chickens and ducks inside, and then surrounded the coop with a net. After all, cats are made of liquid; they can squeeze through any small gap.
Once the chickens and ducks were settled, Lin Feng finally let Fat Fat out. Once out, the cat stretched, arched its back to relax, and let out a meow. It trotted over to the living room play area to see the babies, leaping inside and rubbing against them.
Erbao immediately grabbed the cat and buried her face in its fur for a good sniff.
"MEOW..."
The cat extended a small paw and patted Erbao's face. Just as it was about to flee, Sibao caught it.
"Kitty..." Sibao watched the cat's ears twitch back and forth, finding it amusing to pinch them.
The other babies crowded around, giving Fat Fat a thorough petting. Lin Feng could hardly bear to watch. He rescued Fat Fat from the babies' grasp. "Go on, go play."
The cat jumped out of Lin Feng's arms, landed gracefully, and went to its bowl to find some food. After filling its belly, it ran back to the yard.
Needless to say, it's definitely after the chickens.
Seeing the good weather, Lin Feng pushed the babies outside to soak up some sun. It would strengthen their immune systems and help them get some calcium.
Oh, my. When the babies saw the chickens and ducks in the coop, they started gurgling with delight. Fat Fat paced around the cage, meowing incessantly, clearly desperate.
Lin Feng played with the babies, teaching them. "This is a chicken... chick-en... and that's a ducky... ducky..."
Erbao learned quickly but got them mixed up. Pointing at a chicken, she called out, "Ducky, Ducky!" Then she clapped her hands joyfully and shouted at the ducks, calling them chickens. Lin Feng corrected her, but Erbao was stubborn.
Sibao, however, got it right. "Chicky! Ducky, Ducky!" she babbled. She wiggled her little bottom as if she wanted to catch a chicken herself, then pointed at them and yelled, "Dada, Dada!"
Lin Feng didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Sibao, I think you're doing that on purpose, but I have no proof!"
Dabao wanted to try, but when he opened his mouth, he seemed to forget the words.
"This is a chicken, and that's a ducky," Lin Feng prompted.
Dabao was silent for a moment before managing, "Chi... da-da..."
"Chicken. Ducky, ducky," Lin Feng corrected his pronunciation.
Suddenly, Fat Fat leaped onto the top of the coop. Lin Feng had specially reinforced the top with a sturdy panel. Fat Fat prowled around in a circle but couldn't find a way in. Finally, it started scratching relentlessly at the surface.
The chickens and ducks inside panicked, squawking and clucking in alarm. After a while, Fat Fat had achieved nothing. Seeing it was no threat, the chickens and ducks grew brazen.
The babies were having the time of their lives.
Lin Feng surveyed the garden, thinking he would install some playground equipment, but that would have to wait until the babies were older. He checked the time and went into the kitchen to turn down the stove. When he came back out, he saw Sibao just about to stand up in her stroller. He had specifically bought the safest, highest-quality strollers. If it had been any other model, a baby bouncing in it like she was at a disco probably would have toppled the whole thing over.
Terrified, Lin Feng rushed over and scooped Sibao into his arms. As the babies grew and became more mobile, he had to watch them every second. Who knew what they might do next?
With the chickens and ducks around, the babies were no longer content to stay inside. Luckily, the weather was warm, and the sun was out every day.
The property security guard came by to tell Lin Feng that the old gentleman wasn't seriously hurt. His daughter, still worried, was keeping him in the hospital to recover. That was a relief.
That evening, the babies couldn't stop thinking about the chickens and ducks in the yard and constantly wanted to go out, which Lin Feng found quite troublesome. To make matters worse, Fat Fat was scratching and meowing at the kitchen door, driving him up the wall. They were just children, after all. A few toys were enough to distract them for a while.
For the next few days, their home felt like a private zoo.
"Honey, when the weather gets a little warmer, let's take the babies to a real zoo," Lin Feng suggested one evening.
"Okay! Let's go to Chimelong Safari Park!" Zhang Yuxi replied.
That night, Zhang Yuxi's milk supply was seriously low. It was time to wean.
"We'll start tomorrow night!" the couple decided.
The next evening, when it was time for milk, Lin Feng tried using music to distract Sanbao. It worked at first, but an eight-month-old's instincts were too strong to resist. When the time came, she wanted to nurse. The more he tried to stop her, the more she wanted it. It pushed even Sanbao, who had such a gentle nature, to her wit's end.
"Mama, Mama..."
See? When people are pushed to their limits, they're capable of anything.
Lin Feng held Sanbao. "Mommy's busy and not home today. How about Daddy makes you some formula?"
When he offered the formula, Sanbao swatted the bottle away, her anxious eyes searching for any sign of Zhang Yuxi. "Mama, Mama..."
Sanbao tried to wriggle out of Lin Feng's arms, determined to find her mommy and her milk. Lin Feng soothed her, trying to distract her with other things. Sanbao turned her head away, her little lip quivering, and then she burst into tears.
Sanbao was not a baby who cried often. How heartbroken must she be to cry like this?
Lin Feng sighed. "Baby, Mommy doesn't have any milk left. What am I supposed to feed you?"
Sanbao cried her little heart out in his arms.
"Don't cry, baby, be good. Just bear with it, and it will be over soon..."
Hiding outside the door, Zhang Yuxi heard every single one of Sanbao's cries. Her heart was shattering. Finally, tormented by the relentless sound, she couldn't stand it any longer. She pushed the door open. "Sanbao, Mommy's here!"
With eyes red and puffy like a little rabbit's, Sanbao looked up at Zhang Yuxi through her sobs and sniffles. She stretched her little arms out, asking to be held.
Lin Feng could only sigh.
Snuggled against Zhang Yuxi's chest, Sanbao nuzzled and nursed until she contentedly drifted off to sleep. Zhang Yuxi felt her daughter's back, which was drenched in sweat. Her hair was damp, too, and an indescribable heartache washed over her.
She felt as if she had committed some atrocious sin.
Once Lin Feng had settled Sanbao in her crib, he came over to console Zhang Yuxi. "Honey, I know how hard this is for you," he said softly. "But weaning is a necessary process. You know your milk is drying up, and as long as Sanbao is fixated on nursing, she won't eat her other food properly. We can't let that continue. Besides, if you give in now, didn't she cry for nothing?"
Feeling guilty, Zhang Yuxi mumbled, "Okay, okay, honey... I won't come out next time."
"Good. You have to resist. You absolutely have to!"
"I will."
The following evening, when Sanbao saw Zhang Yuxi come home, her eyes lit up. "Hold..."
Zhang Yuxi picked her up. "Sanbao, you've been so good today. Why the sudden urge for a hug from Mommy?"
Lin Feng, who had already seen through Sanbao's little trick, just smiled. Sure enough, once Zhang Yuxi was holding her, she couldn't let go. The moment she tried to put her down, Sanbao would start to cry. To get her milk, the proud Sanbao had lowered her little head. She had learned that a crying child gets what they want.
Zhang Yuxi was at a loss. "Honey, what do we do?"
She really shouldn't have underestimated the babies. They were already capable of their own little schemes.
Lin Feng tried to take Sanbao, but Sanbao made it clear: Mommy was hers today, and no one else would do.
"Next time you get home, I'll take Sanbao upstairs. You can just eat dinner and then hide," Lin Feng proposed.
Zhang Yuxi wholeheartedly agreed. "Alright."
As clingy as Sanbao was, she still had her moments of distraction. The instant she turned her head, she was passed into Lin Feng's arms like a game of hot potato. Sanbao stared at Lin Feng's face, slightly baffled.
Whoops, that was careless. I let my guard down.
She let out a wail and burst into tears.
"Don't cry, baby," Lin Feng soothed her. "Mommy has gone to work. She's gone to her job." Every time Zhang Yuxi left for work, Lin Feng would tell the children that Mommy was off to do the work she loved. They were gradually starting to understand that "Mommy at work" meant Mommy wasn't home.
But upon hearing this, Sanbao was having none of it. She cried even harder.
While Lin Feng comforted her, he also had to look after the other babies, but they were fine. Sanbao's crying wasn't as infectious as Sibao's; the others didn't immediately join in. Lin Feng had no choice but to let the other babies fall asleep on their own while he focused on soothing Sanbao.
Sanbao cried for over half an hour, her sobs eventually tapering off as she drifted in and out of sleep. When she finally fell quiet, her little cheeks were still stained with tears. Only after Lin Feng was sure she was sound asleep did he signal for Zhang Yuxi to come out.
Looking at Sanbao's red little nose, Zhang Yuxi's eyes reddened with heartache.
