The moment he woke up Ethan was hit with pain, like a lot of pain. His body felt like it was burning up and regenerating at the same time. Hot and cold mixing to form one constant throbbing of sharp stabs all over his body. When he finally managed to open his eyes the first thing he saw was a person made from ice grabbing his arm to help him up. The person looked like a soldier you would expect in medieval times, wearing full plate armor, at least its body was shaped like it.
Back on his feet he looked at the guardian who gave him an approving nod. "Well done Ethan, you managed to create one soldier unconsciously because you felt threatened or were in pain that's already remarkable with a fresh class like you received. When you feel better we will go over the class in more detail. I told you I do this because I believe you can reach the top and that's why I will provide you with information the system wouldn't disclose. Because while we're still in the tutorial we're both of the House of Winter so some restrictions vanish. That's why Ouroboros, while he is your patron, he's not in your house so the help he can provide here is very limited. Will you take the chance and work with me?"
The guardian extended his hand, a smile on his face as he offered Ethan not only training but also information. Something he lacked severely, Ethan still felt uncomfortable that he couldn't control his emotions but after thinking about it for a while he took the offered hand.
"I'm in your debt Jeriel, for doing this so tell me a bit more about this class you gave me...also what is heavenly favour? I saw it in the system notifications." he let go off his hand and inspected the soldier he created a bit more. While doing that he created a staff made from his, his hands feeling empty after his last one got destroyed.
"Let us begin with the easier topic. Heavenly favour…to break it down it's a currency, like gold and silver or the paper money of some civilizations it can be exchanged for goods and services. While mortals can earn it, heavenly favour is usually in the realm of immortals and gods." Ethan opened his mouth to ask something but was stopped before one word came from his mouth. "Yes, immortality and godhood are two different things, I can feel your thoughts here in this world of my memories, but back to your original questions."
The guardian sat down on a block of ice and gestured for Ethan to do the same. "Heavenly favour works like normal currency but instead of trading with other mortals you can trade with the system. When used you can achieve certain things, influence a vote, change an ability or skill, a class like we just did for example. It's the most powerful form of direct influence we have with the system. How you can earn it is actually a bit tricky. Because you have to assist the system, how the system decides what counts as help or not, nobody knows. What I can say is that Aeloria had a lot of heavenly favours because of her role as a balancing force of the multiverse."
Ethan raised his hand and quickly asked a question. "How much did you use to change my class in this way?" The guardian laughed and gestured for him to put his arm down.
"You're not in school Ethan but to answer it, we used 50 heavenly favours to change your class, including your abilities on the same rarity as before, while keeping the same stat distribution. Your circumstances are rare, blessed by one of the old ones, with a special variant element and some interesting skills, while still in the tutorial. But don't worry, I'm glad I used them because when this tutorial ends, I will finally rest alongside my goddess."
A sad smile appeared on Jeriel's face as he talked about his long lost goddess. "I hope your questions are answered in regard to heavenly favour? It's a currency for the gods and immortals to influence the system which can be earned by helping the system."
Ethan nodded and looked back at the ice soldier who was standing like a statue behind him. His eyes wandered over it before he addressed the guardian. "Can you tell me a bit about my class? Especially what these soldiers are capable of?"
"Certainly." Jeriel stood up and gestured for Ethan to do some the same, then he punched the soldier in the chest, cracking his body in the process. A fine spider web of them spreading over most of its body. "Your eternal ice has a special effect as it will slowly mend the wounds sustained by attacks. On your current level it's insignificant but later it will be a great boon."
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
Both of them could watch as the finer cracks sealed back up again in the soldier, it would take a few minutes to fully restore it, too slow for actual combat. But every little bit helped out. Especially since Ethan couldn't feel any pull on his own mana reserves.
"If you want to speed things up you can use [Arctic Reinforcement] to heal them but also to increase their attack power, this boost is also negligible at your level but will make them deadly once you're stronger."
Ethan used his new ability and the cracks in the soldiers body sealed up rapidly, the attack it was hit with didn't break anything off so it just sealed the cracks. At the same time the body of it looked a bit bulkier.
"While that ability heals them and provides an attack boost, your other ability [Frozen Vanguard] increases the movement speed and gives their attacks a bit of range, the range comes from an aura of frost that moves forward when punching or swinging a weapon."
Ethan activated it but realized he didn't even know how to control the soldier in front of him. He furrowed his brow and tried gestures and talking but the soldier remained..frozen in place…before he finally tried to reach it with his mind. Like a rope that has been taut, the connection snapped into place. It wasn't like with Nora or Pale, there were no thoughts to be exchanged, just commands to be given.
So Ethan spent the next ten minutes making the soldier walk, punch, jump, sprint and so on to test the limits. Combined with his new abilities he was moving and fighting against shadow enemies, the strain it put on Ethan's mana was immense when using so many skills in quick succession but it helped him to understand.
"Very good, you're on the right track with it now we come to the most important skill. [Frostforged Legion] As you guessed the abilities on paper look a bit small, especially their descriptions make them sound a bit boring. But this skill can change the battlefield, combined with your control focused main class it will make you a formidable opponent, a wizard should always fight from the back after all. You can create soldiers just like you would with a block of ice or an attack, for now that's alright but later on I would advise you to dismantle the skill and expand it. Like…hmm I think a demonstration would be better."
Jeriel snapped his fingers and slowly a soldier formed next to Ethan's but instead of stopping it grew bigger and bulkier until it stood around five meters tall. Its body is clad in armor with some more protective layers in certain places like the joins, neck or chest. Ethan could see inscriptions inside the ice before it turned white and hid anything away.
"This is a soldier too, as you see it's a lot bigger, equipped with custom made armor and filled with inscriptions to give it more durability and even a rough understanding of its surroundings. A real master that actually had the class could make them almost sentient, but that's far away for you. Now we come to the exciting part. Weapons."
He snapped his finger again and a giant halberd appeared in the soldier's hands, the blade big enough to even chop down the guardian's trees with a few swings. The soldier, or sentinels as Ethan decided to call them, moved away from them and started to chop boulders apart like they're made from butter.
"Here you're lucky again with your ice variant, eternal ice will do well for weapons. I have to constantly supply the soldier with energy to keep the halberd in working condition, alas I'm not a real [Frostforger] like you."
Ethan watched the destruction for a while before he equipped his own puny soldier, going for a more standard variant of equipment with a sword and shield. Then he did the same as before, having the soldier use the weapons while also activating abilities. After he felt comfortable with it Jeriel tasked him with creating more soldiers. While he wanted to make hundreds he only managed ten of them for now. When using no ability and just having them move they were right at the limit of his mana regeneration. Jeriel nodded approvingly and wanted to start the next lesson when he suddenly stopped and furrowed his brow.
"They're here, it seems our enemy has reached the mountain and started to climb it. We need to prepare for its arrival."
He clapped his hands and both of them vanished from the realm of memories.
