There were some major differences between dragons and wyverns. First was size, dragons are massive beasts while a wyvern was a little bigger than human to small horse sized. Other than that it was their appendages and wings, while dragons had all four legs and a distinct set of wings. Wyverns would have wings attached to their arms and to the body, and legs.
Af for other than appearance dragons were intelligent creatures and capable of using their own magic and blessing other creatures. Wyverns did none of those things and were much more wild. They had the intelligence of perhaps a dog. They wouldn't be able to use the translation spell on them.
The goblins had extensive knowledge from scrolls and other transitions about their prey. Wyverns were always a topic that goblins discussed. Other mounts as well but every creature that can't fly somewhat always wants to be able to.
There wasn't much else to talk about on the journey. They had to pass by the ocean because the larger swamp area was protected by some very unfriendly creatures. It was more of a ridge line for a long time until they climbed down to scattered small beaches in places.
"We've never tried this before," said Joe, "but we never really had a reason to before."
"What are you saying?"
"Remember the poison I have with the horror rabbit?"
"Yeah," said Kurt. He still had a pouch or two and the opportunity never really came up again. Or had it? He had almost forgotten the technique.
"Well I'm hoping we can make rain with your powers, preferably hail actually. But I want to lace it with a stinging and numbing compound. I'm hoping it will cause them to fall out of the sky."
"We will get hit with it though," said Kurt.
Hank shrugged, "it's not so bad but we don't have thin wings."
"I mean…I've never tried to make it the most or spray really." He made a water fist then lifted the water into a ball in his hand. "Hmm." Kurt was a little confused on how to make it disperse in a way that would give maximum coverage. He tried something but the water just fell flat.
"I got an idea," said Joe and handed Kurt one of the coins he had made. "Can you lift this with it?"
Kurt tried for a moment but it was hard and the coin fell, then he thought he was just over thinking it. And then he made the ball just a lot bigger, before it wasn't much bigger than the coin, now the coin looked small in comparison. It was keeping it small that was hard anyway, that much mass of water moving he could easily carry a small coin.
"Okay," said Joe, "let's take a step back."
Kurt threw out the water ball, and Joe spoke an incantation. And the entire thing exploded after.
"Okay," said Kurt, "I think I can do better next time. I just need to know when to let it happen, just what's the last word there again?"
"Ra."
"Can you say it louder, at the end for me? The spells don't translate."
"Yeah," said Joe. He handed Kurt two bags filled with similar colored powder. "So when we are ready, let's start with this and see how they react."
"What if they run?"
"They won't abandon a nest that large."
"I can make a really big one," said Kurt. "Like there isn't enough room right here unless I do it in the sky."
"What if they can't fly at all after?"
"That's the best part," said Joe. The healing paste works on it. "That would be the best case scenario really, drop them, tame them, heal them, repeat for the next batch."
"That's no fun," said Tom.
"True but if it works half decently which is more what I expect."
"Half decently?"
"I expect it will cause them to have trouble flying as well, but not completely disable them. Maybe a few if they are hit really badly with it will fall. We I'll know after the first attempt really if it is worth it, or we go back to a long drawn out plan of luring them."
"If we are lucky," said Tom. "The actual nest will allow a drop like that to happen. The little ones can be unpredictable, they say."
"We still have to go in," said Hank.
After a day, they had reached the point they were to start heading a bit inland. There was a cliff face with caverns, and there were wyvern flying among them.
"Well," it looks like dropping it on the nest is out," said Tom. "They probably got several holes up there. They might even connect for all we know."
They had come in land a bit but not close enough to warrant much concern from the wyverns they would take the night to recuperate and spend the next day attempting to claim them all.
Many goblin warriors were gathering bags of rock, they could use a sling. Even though the scouts will be doing most of the heavy lifting. The most crucial was the shamans they needed to get in close. Having a warrior around helps with that.
Another thing they were doing was making places to bring the wyverns in between. Once tamed a bit you could get several to follow a single rider, but not if there were a lot of untrained ones messing with them. In other words they had to either take them all, or separate the ones they did one at a time.
Much of the plan lays on bringing them here, then bringing the whole flock together. That way they could bring a lot more than the number of goblins they had.
"The thing is," said Tom, "there might be a lot of them, and if that's the case it might be worth it to convince Layla to come down for a second and open a gate here to Helmsbrig. Of course I wouldn't want to put the Queen in danger. But if we have more then we can fly all at once."
"It's going to be troublesome," said Kurt. "We can see what happens, we had a similar plan to fly them around."
"We still do," said Tom, "but we can fly her back with mounts quickly. We can't do that without the mounts."
"I don't know how to fly them!"
"Ohh," said Tom, "I mean it's just like riding a ram really."
"I've never ridden a ram."
Kurt could really cross the terrain with easy, his water boots would allow him to jump over and past everything. He didn't 'need to fly' he could make a jog out of it.
"Really? I would have thought."
"Well hold on tight and lean the way you want, pull the head a bit up to look and it goes up lean back, down lean forward. And you know," Tom rocked back and forth, "right, left. Don't worry about the wing flaps too much just don't dig into them."
