Layla remained quiet. Kurt remained quiet. There was a lot of tension in the air. And a smell. A smell of death, even after they took the bodies it still went.
"Umm, Kurt?" said Layla, said meekly.
"What is it?"
"I think maybe we should tell Carl, or at least one of the people here to tell him."
Kurt gave a low snarl. Again she was right. None of this was Carl's fault. "Fine, I'll go see."
"Be careful though, we still don't know if any are waiting out there."
Kurt made his way out of the warehouse slowly, checking the sides. It seemed like there was nothing. He walked to the main office. And came in. The receptionist looked at him.
"Is it? Is it over?" the receptionist said.
"We think so, is Carl here?"
"No, but I can deliver a message from you, I know about the.."
"Yeah. We are going to be leaving without him, tell him to just keep going along the path. Eventually we will catch up to him. Tell him we are sorry this happened, and to you once we leave there should be no danger, I doubt they will come back, we won't be."
"I was told to tell you, he doesn't blame any one of you for this. Most of us don't either, the ones that know at least. And that he is obligated to tell the crown about this, this was very serious. I wish we could have…done anything. The fire clan doesn't have the right to do what they did, but…" said the receptionist.
"No you should have stayed right out of it. If you can. I wish I could. We will figure out a way to pay for repairs, Carl should be able to arrange it."
"I'm sure, sir. Can we, ummm, resume normal business?"
"There is a bit of cleaning, but I think the danger is gone. We will be leaving shortly, we just wanted to…"
"Good, good."
"I think I should go."
"Sir, good luck."
By the time Kurt went back to the gate it was already gone. Layla had finished.
"Are you still mad?" said Layla.
"I don't even know anymore."
"Well we just have to get to those mountains," Layla said pointing to a mountain range in the distance, "and find a good place, then you can take all the time you need Kurt."
Layla was not trying to poke Kurt in anyway, and he could tell. She was walking on thin ice around him. "Then let's just go as fast as we can, I wanna go home."
"I do too."
The trip actually didn't take long at all, Kurt had never seen how fast Layla could fly. But it was very fast when she wanted to apparently. Kurt was still a bit faster, but still he was at a very brisk pace. With the water boots. It had gotten dark so their movements were harder to see.
They had gotten to the foot of the mountain range, on the other side would be Lake Longbow, the Arrow mountains separated the area. Normally they would have had to do a big detour for the path around the mountain, but when you can just jump four stories high, you tend to find different paths.
Since they didn't need to get all the way to the lake they decided to just find a nice cozy, quiet, cave that was very hard for a regular human to get to, and practically impossible to just stumble upon.
The cave had been on the other side of the range and you could see Lake Longbow in the distance, it was named Longbow because it had a mostly crescent shape, but not regular, and if you squinted at it from the mountains it would look like a silhouette of a, slightly misformed wide longbow. Still, it was large enough in both width and length to be a proper lake. It was a great view to behold.
The town, of the same name, was a little settlement near the center of the lake; there were various fishing boats along it. It seemed like a very peaceful place. The foliage was beautiful, the winding road to the town seemed rundown but wholesome in a way. It seemed like a place someone would want to vacation or retire to. Rich scenery, open waters, and places to go and see.
Layla told Kurt this would be perfect. He decided to take in the view while Layla would open the gate. He needed a little time to think about what happened, about what he was even doing at all. He felt something strange but didn't think much of it, he had not been feeling great after the battle, and wanted to rest. Very quickly though Layla returned, and she wasn't alone.
Kurt turned to look at who Layla had brought, he originally thought it was just someone from the other side of the gate like Sara or something. But that's not who it was, the man seemed familiar. Kurt had seen him before, and the man began to rise into the air. Then it hit him, this was one of the Fae Layla had rescued. Why bring them here? Why make the gate fully open again?
"Why did you bring one of the Fae here?"
The man looked confused, "this is where I'm supposed to live, my well and all."
"Your Well?" said Kurt.
"Yeah, Kurt, I needed to," said Layla.
"Needed to? You needed to?"
"Fine, this was the last step of the plan," said Layla, turning away with a hrumpf.
Had she really done it, did she really move this Fae well to right here, on…that could change everything. Everything has been changing a lot lately.
"This is Earth, Layla, this isn't Terra," said Kurt.
"I know that."
"Why would you bring a mana well to the other side of the gate?" Kurt's eyes were bulging out of his head.
"I think it is beautiful, the name is Paul by the way, Kurt right? I think I owe you a thank you for rescuing me." said Paul, bowing toward him.
"That's not the point."
"Fair is fair, Kurt," said Layla.
"Huh?"
"You came to our world, why wouldn't we come to yours?"
"That's…not…"
"Ohh but it is Kurt, I don't understand why you're so surprised. I always told you that I was ambitious."
