The man had dropped his sword, both of his hands had clasped his neck, blood flowing from everywhere. He couldn't stop the bleeding. His hands were overflowing with the viscous red blood. Over the ringing of the in his ears, Kurt could hear the gurgles and muffled scream. The man is still desperately trying to stop his neck from bleeding somehow.
Kurt had never killed a man, never watched one die in front of him. He never imagined he would see something so gruesome in front of him. He forgot where he was, and could do anything but watch the dying man struggle to breath, struggle to stand, convulsing. He couldn't blink, turn away. Time started to slowly stand still.
The man's gargled sounds would haunt nightmares, the look in his eyes, the fear. Kurt was now a killer, this man was all but dead in front of him. Just before the man finally fell limp to the ground, Kurt was knocked to the side by something.
He tumbled to the ground, and saw that it was a goblin that had tackled him. Hank had pushed him, "Snap out of it Sir Kurt! We're not done."
Hank had probably just saved Kurt's life somehow, shaking his head trying to find some determination. Kurt stood gripping his sword, just putting it all away somewhere, somehow.
He turned to see both of Sara's tree golems were on fire, one seemed to have stopped moving. There were a few dozen goblins. The fire clan members were shooting off blasts, and fire whips.
Kurt leapt towards one of the members swinging the whips, the goblin warriors seemed to be having trouble with them. From above the man his sword struck the whip, Kurt felt a strange sensation coming from the sword, and the whip seemed to burn out. The counter magic worked! Several goblins took the advantage, and the man was down. Before Kurt had to attack.
The battle was a mess, but it was clear the fire clan was outnumbered, even if they could take a goblin or two, the third or perhaps forth would land a hit. Sara had managed to keep her distance, blocking some of the fire whips. A few arrows shot into a fire clan member.
Kurt gave a three strike crescent slash at one of the fire clan members who blocked two of them somehow but the third on hit. Kurt rushed towards him, and was able to knock him down. A passing goblin drove a sword into his heart. Another groan of death, another set of dead eyes.
He was pushed to the side. A goblin had been hit by some blast into him. Kurt fell with him. Pushing the goblin off him he got to his feet again. The goblin gave him a look and a smile, before he went off into the mayhem.
Things had started to calm down, the fire clan member that remained became surrounded and taken down by arrows and swords. The warehouse they were in suffered some damages from the initial attacks. The grounds were stained in blood. A dead man, a dead goblin lay on the ground in front of Kurt, their entrails showing.
The scrambling mass seemed to calm down and the crowd began to shout.
"Glory! Glory!"
They had won. The goblins began taking the bodies through the gate, both human and goblin. There was to be another cremation soon, and the bodies of the fire clan. Kurt looked at his hands, blood, his sword blood, his clothes blood. He started to shake, the horror of what he had witnessed, what he had done started to come rushing back. All the men dead, all these goblins dead. Was this really inevitable? Couldn't there have been another way?
This was somewhat good for them, their largest enemy had been dealt a massive blow in the last few hours. Their main base was destroyed, and an unknown number of members with it were gone. It was doubtful they would have the resources to leave Dakota Spring for a while. And in the reverse, their power had grown, more Fae would mean more guardians. The fireball coins Kurt had made worked extremely well. Even if someone else had been thinking of making a move, after this they would have to rethink at minimum.
Sara had found her way to Kurt, her Auburn hair was a mess, blood also on her torn clothes. They gave each other a serious look. "You okay?"
"Just a few cuts," said Kurt, still shaking a little, sword relaxed at his side c with a blank expression. His eyes unfocused on what was in front of him, "this is all, this is all theirs," he said, turned and stared off.
"Yeah, I…" said Sara, tears swelled in her eyes, " I just, I…I…I didn't want to… Kurt." She rushed at him forcing a hug, Kurt dropped his sword as she did, she was crying, sobbing, she pushed her head into Kurt's chest, tears just came rolling down. They were both killers now. They weren't ready for it, who ever really is? Echoes of the gargling man still seemed to be heard in the distance, would that ever stop? Tears fell down Kurt's cheeks as he trembled at what he'd seen and done. And hugged Sara back. It wasn't like watching a castle topple in the distance.
The battle was won, the goblins seemed to have taken very little casualties. A few of them died but compared to their opponents. And for a goblin to die in battle it's seen as a glorious end, at least to them. It was so quiet now. So very quiet. Yet so loud. Sara sobbing, he couldn't concentrate, his senses weren't working right. Everything felt wrong.
Sara finally was able to push herself away. Tears still rolled but she was trying to stand strong. As strong as she could. They didn't speak. They didn't need to. They both knew.
Battles always seem so short yet so long, really a few good blows would kill most anything. Hour-long fights of endurance were rare. But seconds of adrenaline seemed to last forever. The whole thing couldn't have been more than a few minutes. He had fought monsters before, killed things with his bare hands. But one of your own kind, like that? Point blank.
Kurt made his way back to the gate. His job wasn't done today, they were still on the run at least for a bit. He planned to go as fast as he could. He just wanted to crawl into the ball, forget everything that just happened. The entire ordeal, but he knew, that he would never forget today. He would never forget what he did. How it looked. The sounds, he still could hear in the distance, of him, the man he killed, whatever his name was.
"You okay Kurt," said Layla.
Kurt gave Layla a dead stare, "just do it already."
Layla didn't say anything back and began to close the gate in silence after everyone else had gotten to the other side.
