Apocalypse: Inhuman Ascension

Chapter 61: Lucky-Spin Machine

*Whistle*

Laying on the rooftop of the high-rise building, Leon whistled as he watched the hulking zombie's head burst apart.

He hadn't expected the sniper's firepower to be so impressive. The materials he had used were a bit costly; they consumed three third-level crystals and seven second-level crystals.

"It's worth it, I guess."

Sensing his thoughts, Aisha remarked casually. Just like Anna, she only appeared aloof to others. When with Leon, she was just her normal self—an easy-going girl. The same could be said about Rebecca.

"Indeed."

Leon nodded, then stood up. His eyes narrowed as he watched Sylvia battle the acid zombie who was slowly losing to her.

His hand unconsciously rubbed the sniper, reminiscing the feeling when he had shot. It was precise and sharp, like he had trained with guns in the past. Obviously, he had no experience in shooting.

"Code 408D—Interface."

His eyes darted to the glowing screen that appeared.

[Name: Leon White]

[Race: Undead Devourer]

[Dual Class: Smith-Weaver|Sharpshooter]

[Attributes: |Silver Hide||Target Lock||Weaving||Death Claws… (expand)]

[Level: Third-Level]

His race issue had been resolved, and he had used the Dual-Class Special Card on himself, allowing him to have two classes. With his racial transformation granting him superb close-combat abilities, he opted for a class that allowed long-range attacks.

With the Sharpshooter Class at hand, he could easily kill enemies from afar without being injured.

Still, his desire for close-combat surpassed this. The thrill of battle and the danger was something he longed for.

'Haha. Have I actually become so twisted?'

Without his transformation, his mind worked like an abnormal human, filling him with several crazy thoughts and desires.

"They're done."

Rebecca's clear voice woke him from his thoughts. Looking down, he realized that the Red Valkyries had eradicated the entire zombie horde and had begun to collect their essence crystals.

Stretching lightly, he stepped onto the ledge of the rooftop and grinned.

"Let's go check it out, shall we?"

Without waiting for their reply, he jumped off the building. Both girls had their eyes widened, shocked by his action. Even as evolved, they still had a primal caution of jumping from high places.

They exchanged a quick glance, then smiled wryly. Although they were also third-level evolved and believed that they wouldn't die from such fall, they chose to climb down the stairs.

Bang! Crack!

The asphalt caved beneath Leon's feet as he landed, feeling a jarring sensation in his legs. His expression had returned to its usual calm as he approached the team.

"You did well."

He said flatly, yet those words sounded like high praise in the women's ears.

Even though Leon knew they were exemplary, it wasn't easy for a team to confront other creatures numbering more than twice their own. Yet, this all-female evolved team had done it.

'Looks like I have to carefully allocate class cards to them…'

Shaking his head, he looked at the person approaching him. Dragging the headless bodies of the two third-level zombies, Sylvia's grin widened.

"Boss! Can I eat them?"

She was quite excited because she knew that she was close to evolution. The energy gained from consuming two third-level creatures would be enough to directly trigger her evolution.

Leon nodded nonchalantly, uninterested in the bodies. Although eating a third-level creature would help his evolution, it'd be slow. Even slower than Sylvia's. Although they were of the same race, Leon noticed that she advanced faster.

'Perhaps it's because I'm the Alpha?'

He chuckled inwardly. Even as he had been the one to transform Sylvia, there was no bond between them. The only reason she was following him was because of their former relationship.

'We're truly like zombies. Turning others without binding them. Well, that sounds alright…'

Shrugging, Leon turned his attention to the loot. Two third-level crystals, fifty-five second-level crystals, and one hundred and sixty-two first-level crystals.

From behind him, Rebecca stepped forward, then collected the crystals into a suitcase. They needed to be safeguarded, since essence crystals were practically currency in the apocalypse.

Finally, Leon approached the machine which had been surrounded by the zombies earlier.

As soon as he saw it, his eyes widened.

'This…'

Leon felt stumped. How was this possible? Already? He felt like he had seen a ghost. Yet, the machine remained still before him, not dispersing into smoke or anything.

'It's real…'

Still, he quickly calmed his nerves and suppressed his excitement.

Calmly, he approached the machine and touched it. Immediately, a holographic panel flickered to life.

[Lucky-Spin System]

[Welcome to your ultimate gachapon in the apocalypse!]

[Do you wish to spin immediately? However, you have to pay the price]

[Note: You only gain items corresponding to your price]

Leon's expression grew solemn. He had never known that this machine could be so animated.

"Rebecca, bring the crystals."

Though surprised, the young lady complied and brought the suitcase to him. Leon picked five first-level crystals, then tossed them into the machine's hole.

The screen flickered, then turned into a wheel. Displayed in its sectors were seven different items. Leon and the evolved women behind him studied them intently.

His eyes glinted as he recognized each of the items displayed.

'Swordsman Class Card, Summoner Class Card, First Level Evolution Potion, One-Star Velon Metal, Siber Roots (1), Code 408D manual, One-Star Attack Card…'

He mentally listed the items, recalling their uses. Among the seven listed, number six seemed to be useless. However, only Leon knew the true worth. It was practically a divination scroll—one that revealed information whenever a major event approached.

This was one of the reasons why the Solaris Domain and a few other factions became unparalleled in North America.

Leon had some interest in the Siber Roots. He didn't know its function, but knew it was a lifeform. If nurtured, it would undoubtedly be useful. In the apocalypse, there were no useless items, only inappropriately used items.

'The Summoner Class is rather fascinating, even better than the Swordsman Class.'

If groomed well enough, the Summoner could summon powerful creatures a level higher than their summoner. In the apocalypse where power meant survival, it was a great boon.

'Magnificent.'

His eyes narrowed at the last item—an attack card. He recognized it. After all, it was quite common in his past life. When used, it would shoot an attack at the target, carrying the strength of an evolved. What made it a variable however, was that the kind of attack it dealt were unpredictable. It could be a poisonous attack, or one that directly struck the soul. Even Leon felt cautious before such unpredictability.

"Uh… not choosing?"

Sylvia's confused voice made him realize he had been standing idly, lost in thought. Raising his hand, he clicked on the button illuminating the option 'Play'.

Immediately, the wheel spun, making the evolved hold their breath. The women could already tell that this was something important based on Leon's expression. Everyone watched as the wheel slowed then stopped. The pointer calmly rested on an item.
