Apocalypse: Inhuman Ascension

Chapter 84: Killing the Zombie Kings (3)

As soon as Martin joined the battle, the scales shifted. The zombie was forced back, and the other evolved humans felt the pressure on them reducing.

"Hahahaha! Boss is here now, let's kill this thing!"

One of them laughed, his voice filled with confidence. He was assured that the zombie would be eliminated now that Martin had joined them.

The others didn't reply, but hope shone in their eyes. Seeing their trust in him, Martin's chest swelled in pride, and he instantly became more aggressive.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Each swing of his sword struck the Hulk Zombie King with precision and strength, cutting several gashes across its skin. The zombie roared and countered, but its momentum was stifled. Several attributes and abilities were being used against it, and it was outnumbered.

However, this didn't daunt its fighting spirit as it fought more vigorously. It became violent to the extent that only Martin could face it, their surroundings filled with craters. A few meters away, the other third-level evolved were only able to lend support with ranged attacks.

Boom!

Blade clashed against fist, then halted. A fierce contest in strength ensued. Martin's gaze shone with a fierce light, blood dripping from his lips. He had exchanged several blows with the zombie, and couldn't escape unscathed.

The zombie's green eyes remained hot with rage, as its body was marred with several injuries. The most severe ones were caused by Martin, while the others were caused by his teammates.

For a moment, silence filled the battlefield, until a tearing sound was made.

Martin's sword shone with a gold light, and he unexpectedly tore the zombie into two. Several eyes widened at the sight of the seemingly invincible zombie suddenly sliced apart.

Thud!

Its body collapsed to the ground in thuds, and cheers erupted. The other lesser zombies immediately scattered, losing their concentration and will to battle. With their leaders gone, the zombie army collapsed. The remaining evolved immediately hunted as many as they could, but couldn't kill them all.

In the end, several zombies escaped, but much more were killed.

"Huff! Huff! Huff!"

Martin panted, his face pale. He leaned on his sword, watching as the zombies were being killed. Finally, when the last zombie retreated, he did a head-count. Out of the over hundred evolved who had participated in the battle, only seventy six evolved remained. Among those that died, fifteen were first-level evolved, nine were second-level evolved, and two were third-level evolved.

The casualty was mild, but it still made him frown slightly. Losing more people wasn't what he liked, and he felt sorrowful. However, there was nothing he could do.

"Brother Martin! You did exceptionally well! You singlehandedly killed those two vile zombies. You definitely deserve an award!"

Toji appeared with a fawning smile, his expression sincere.

Martin forced a smile, then shook his head. "You might be right. However, we lost many people."

Toji didn't look too concerned. "There's nothing we can do about that. Casualties are inevitable, and we can only be glad it isn't too high."

Martin blinked, a bit surprised. He felt like he had been naive, and his view had suddenly changed.

'He's right. This is the apocalypse. People can lose their lives anytime. The fact that we succeeded requires a celebration. However, I will always hold the burden of knowing the deceased ones in my heart.'

"Alright, guys! Let's pack up the loots!"

...

While Windsor was being joyous over the demise of the two Zombie Kings, Night Veil City was facing an unknown threat.

In the Glass Tower, Leon tapped the table rhythmically, staring at the report placed before him. He had just come out from his seclusion, after forging for several days without rest. Unfortunately, he couldn't even sleep yet, and was forced to attend to an important matter.

Recently, zombie activity had increased in the city, and the patrol teams were unable to curb them any longer. The zombies were strange, and equally strong. Third-Level ones had even appeared, requiring the Red Generals or the Red Valkyries to move out and eliminate them.

"Have you found the source?"

He asked Williams, who was standing beside him.

"I once fought a strange one. It was definitely a zombie, but could speak fluently like you."

Leon raised a brow. "Oh? And how did it go?"

"I couldn't beat it. Had to escape."

Hearing this, Leon's expression turned slightly serious. "Heeh? You couldn't beat it? This is getting interesting."

His previously tired expression disappeared, replaced by a look of interest. He tapped the table again, trying to remember if there were any records of these red-veined zombies in his past life.

However, apart from dungeon monsters, parasites, and a few other strange lifeforms, he hadn't heard of these kind of zombies.

'Perhaps because I wasn't in this city during that time.'

He sighed, then stretched lightly. "Give me a few hours to rest. Then call your colleagues to go pick their choices in the armory. I've made quite a collection."

Williams blinked, then nodded. With Leon personally intervening in the situation, he was confident in their victory.

While Leon retreated to rest, Williams called the other third-level evolved humans in the city, then led them to the armory.

Anna stood in front with her usual cold expression, then pulled up the heavy door. The door was rolled up, allowing them passage into the large room.

When they entered, some couldn't hold their surprise. The lights lit up, illuminating several silver weapons that shone with cold glints.

"Amazing…" Ye Zemin muttered, his gaze attracted to a pair of silver swords. They looked thin, however, their sharpness could be felt even from afar.

"Damn! Dibs on these." He immediately laid claim to them, his eyes shining in excitement. No one fought with him over the swords, as each person was attracted to specific weapons.

Williams crouched before a pair of daggers, gently tracing their curves.

'Three-Star… impressive. Boss is too impressive!'

His thoughts, concealed by a neutral expression, remained unknown to others. Anna didn't need to change her skeletal whip, but she was drawn to a pair of gauntlets. Aisha and Rebecca each picked a spear, twirling them in their hands. Professor Oliver finally changed his hammer, picking a smaller, but heavier one. Ye Ming also picked a large battle-axe, examining its beautiful craft.

Amelia picked a random three-star sword, but found a sheath customized for her. It could help store elemental energy into the sword, the longer it remained in its sheath.

As for Sylvia, her gaze was fixed on another pair of gauntlets which had sharp claws and flexible structure. As for Charles, the head of the guards, he picked a large shield, and a modest broadsword.

Finally, every third-level evolved of the Red Wings were fully equipped with three-star equipments.
