The situation here was very complicated. Even Teluos had no idea what kind of powerful beings were hidden here. Take Chen Xiao, for example. By the time Chen Zheng had even noticed him, he was already a man as devoted to alcohol as he was to life itself. And Chen Xiao was just one step away from ascending to godhood. If not for Chen Zheng, Teluos would have never known such a person existed in the City of Sin.
Moreover, there's that old swindler who appeared out of nowhere. I have no idea where he sprang from. Even after I leave this city and follow Ming Chong and the others back to a normal metropolis, I wonder if people like him exist there, too.
Chen Zheng guessed the old swindler's strength was comparable to Denps's, though he wasn't on the Celestial Ranking. According to the old man himself, Teluos simply didn't dare to include him, but it was just as likely he was boasting.
"Is something wrong?" Chen Zheng asked, lifting the bag in his hand toward the monk.
"Benefactor, your killing intent is very strong," the monk said faintly.
Chen Zheng chuckled. "Excessive killing intent? I only kill those who deserve to die."
"And who deserves to die?" the monk asked. "Everyone makes mistakes. Why not give them another chance? Teluos was here for over a hundred years, always providing a safe place for our Night Watchers to survive. Yet you killed him without even blinking. Even though he belonged to the Red Lotus, I still think he deserved a second chance!"
"You're still defending him?" Chen Zheng chuckled lightly. "This is the same Teluos who caused tens of thousands of our Night Watcher brothers to be buried on Mount As. Which one of them would be willing to spare him? Now, are you going to hand them over or not?"
The monk replied, "If that is how you see it, then you should have just let Teluos go. Perhaps in the future, he could have reformed and become the master of an entire city on his own."
"A saint, are you?" Chen Zheng burst into laughter.
Upon hearing this, the monk frowned.
"I came here to remind you, benefactor, not to kill. It does you no good. Your killing intent has already driven the ghouls and the human race to opposite extremes."
"Do you know anything about the origin of the Pointed-Headed Monsters?" Chen Zheng inquired.
"I do not," Zhang Xuan replied, shaking his head. "However, I understand that ghouls have their own thoughts. Since they have thoughts, there is an opportunity to bargain. As humans, although we all make different choices, there is no need for us to slaughter one another."
"You can explain to Teluos's people that when the Red Lotus first appeared, the Night Watchers did not attack them. But then the Red Lotus was transformed by Mr. Mo into a killing machine, and countless Night Watchers died at their hands," Chen Zheng said indifferently.
"Infinite Life Buddha," the monk intoned, drawing out the words. "Every injustice has its perpetrator. Why resort to utter annihilation?"
Chen Zheng felt that he couldn't communicate with this monk. In fact, he didn't understand why he was wasting so much breath on him in the first place. The monk seemed to be a man of lofty, unrealistic ideals. Chen Zheng had no intention of continuing the pointless conversation. The matter with Teluos was settled, and he had to leave.
"Benefactor!" the young monk spoke up.
Just as Chen Zheng was about to leave, the monk continued, "This is just a word of advice. Do not let your anger consume you. You are still young, and your life is long."
Chen Zheng glanced at him, then turned and started moving toward the docks.
Only after Chen Zheng had left did the monk bring his palms together and recite the Buddha's name.
After walking for about ten minutes, Chen Zheng saw two figures rushing toward him from a distance. When he saw them clearly, he was completely stunned. Upon seeing the girl, however, he paused, and his expression soured.
"Chen Zheng!"
The girl rushed toward him. Instead of tackling him, however, she stopped to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him. She scanned him from head to toe and said, "It's been five years, three months, and six days. I've really missed you."
Chen Zheng scratched his head, completely baffled.
For Chen Zheng, Li Yuqin was a girl of great significance.
Li Yuqin had participated in Chen Zheng's first large-scale operation and was a member of the Night Watchers' Research Division. Her grandfather was a preeminent figure among the Night Watchers, and since the death of Professor X, her grandfather, Li Guofu, had become the head of the division. The organization handled a wide range of operations, including tracking the Sharp Ghosts and translating their communications. Li Yuqin was a natural linguistic prodigy with an extremely high intellect. Before Chen Zheng even met her, she was already working in the Night Watchers' research facility.
Furthermore, Li Yuqin was also gifted in martial arts. When Chen Zheng first met her, she was already a top-tier expert, though she lacked any real combat experience. At the time, Chen Zheng had been leading Li Guohao and others to complete a large-scale operation, and Li Yuqin had joined their team as an advisor.
Chen Zheng had just handled a matter in Chongqing, which was when he had met the city's wealthiest man, Liu Yunfeng. Liu Yunfeng had been abducted, and the investigation confirmed it was the work of people from the criminal underworld. Qin Guosheng and his team were sent to rescue him, only to discover that he had been taken by a gang of over forty members called Lone Wolf. Among the Lone Wolf members was a scientist who enjoyed conducting bizarre experiments. They had kidnapped Liu Yunfeng specifically to extort funds from him to continue their research.
During a major battle, Chen Zheng and Li Yuqin were separated. At that point, both were utterly desperate. Although Li Yuqin was skilled, she could only scream in the face of such an overwhelming attack. It was by employing this tactic that Chen Zheng managed to hold on until the team arrived.
Back then, Chen Zheng had been prepared to die. Li Yuqin had wept by his side, vowing that if he survived, she would marry him. Later, when he indeed didn't die, she even tried to make him keep his promise.
At that time, Chen Zheng had only one thought: to become stronger so he could return to Bai Yao's side and show off.
They met again as time went on, but Li Yuqin's father and grandfather were strongly opposed to their relationship. They felt that since Chen Zheng was part of the Night Watchers, he was bound to die soon, so the matter was dropped.
Li Yuqin, however, took their promise very seriously. Every year, she would find a way to see Chen Zheng. Their relationship was good, but he never promised to marry her.
Over the next couple of years, Chen Zheng formed his own team and was constantly busy. Adding the time he spent recovering from being framed and severely injured, which resulted in amnesia, a total of about five years had passed.
Chen Zheng smiled faintly. "I can see that."
Li Yuqin listened to Jiang Shi's words and nodded slightly.
