The night deepens.
Su Ziyu stands by the bed, gazing at the sleeping profile of the little girl. He crouches down and gently ruffles her little head, then lightly brushes her delicate eyebrows with his thumb. Perhaps she's been living in constant fear recently, because even in her dreams, the little girl's brow furrows, her face showing signs of fear, making one's heart ache for her.
For a child of her age, suddenly losing her mother and being hunted by the Academy, showing such calmness is indeed remarkable.
Su Ziyu questioned himself, knowing he couldn't have managed it at that age.
"Don't worry. With Dad here, everything will be fine." Looking at the little girl's gradually peaceful sleeping face, Su Ziyu felt a wonderfully peculiar sensation.
Daughter.
He actually has a daughter.
The term father is very unfamiliar to Su Ziyu. He never imagined he'd have children, let alone be prepared to be a father. In his past, the word father was a stranger. Growing up as a dependant, he sometimes thought how great it would be if he had a reliable father. He wouldn't need to carefully appease those around him for survival, wouldn't need to swallow his words after being bullied by older kids, he could just tell his father, rather than wait until high school to settle scores.
What a strange feeling.
Once he confirmed that the little girl was his daughter, Su Ziyu accepted her without hesitation, a blood bond making him feel both anxious and joyful.
He was no longer alone.
While on Earth, he had relatives like uncles and aunts, but to Su Ziyu, they were just acquaintances, people he visited annually during the New Year. Most of the time, he was accustomed to being alone. It's not that he couldn't handle loneliness, but the connection between him and his uncles and aunts had a layer of separation, and the distance felt with friends was even more pronounced.
But the little girl before him was entirely different.
She was his daughter.
His child, his bloodline's continuation. She inherited his genes and exhibited extraordinary talent at such a young age, managing to evade the Academy's pursuit on her own.
Su Ziyu felt both proud and furious.
He had no clue how to be a father, but his childhood experiences informed him of his daughter's needs at this moment. Su Ziyu always sought stability, but upon knowing the girl was his daughter, he faced the Academy's force head-on without hesitation.
Even if the opponent was one of Wasteland World's strongest organizations, even if they possessed countless advanced technologies.
So what?
Su Ziyu asked himself if he could accept any risk to protect her, willing to confront the Academy directly if necessary.
Maybe this is what being a father feels like.
Very strange.
While unprepared, Su Ziyu was now beginning to prepare.
If one day he, like the previous Space-Time Inspector, perished in a perilous world, falling to some terrifying monstrosity, he hoped his daughter could live well—perhaps this is the meaning of human bloodline continuity.
Whether to let the little girl travel with him to other worlds wasn't a consideration for Su Ziyu.
He didn't even want to take Qing Ji, so how could he bring his daughter?
The difficulty escalated with each world visited. Su Ziyu refused Qing Ji partly because she couldn't endure such dangerous worlds, making bringing his daughter even more impossible.
He'd rather face everything alone.
In fact, the previous Space-Time Inspector's demise had already prepared Su Ziyu for the worst—that he might one day die in some world—but he was less worried now, even more eager to become stronger, not just for himself but to protect his bloodline.
Squeak.
Su Ziyu gently closed the door. He noticed Matty peeking out from the next room; the girl seemed to have cut her hair a bit shorter, looking almost like a tomboy.
"Thank you for saving her," Su Ziyu said earnestly, looking at her.
"No problem at all," Matty said, somewhat embarrassed, rubbing the back of her head. "Hehe. If you feel like thanking me, just give me some Bottle Caps."
Su Ziyu chuckled, "That wouldn't be enough."
"Go to sleep now."
He reached out and ruffled Matty's hair, saying, "We'll talk about everything tomorrow."
He had seen it all—how Matty let his daughter escape first at the crucial moment, staying herself to intercept the androids. How could Su Ziyu repay that just with a few Bottle Caps?
Her character was somewhat like Van Helsing, always talking about money.
A true money-loving person wouldn't risk their life for someone else.
"Hey!" Matty curiously watched Su Ziyu's silhouette and whispered, "Are you really Superman? How can you fly?"
