Traveler of the River of Time and Space

Chapter 34: Highly Mutated

"Requesting reinforcements!"

"There's an unknown creature inside the research facility! The advance team has already lost contact." Leon reacted swiftly, quickly picking up the communicator to request support from the rear.

About five minutes later.

A group of soldiers wearing exoskeleton armor arrived. Their equipment was more sophisticated, and the weapons in their hands had been upgraded from conventional firearms to laser rifles, far more advanced than those the Wolf Gang had used. Leading them was a young man with a blank expression, seemingly a member of the Bionics School. Behind him were several fully armed synthetics, and if you looked closely, you'd notice that these synthetics bore a slight resemblance to each other.

The group quickly re-entered the research facility.

As they passed through the initial corridor, they were greeted by a scene of carnage. Leon inhaled sharply at the horrific sight before him and muttered, "What kind of monster did this?"

Seven or eight soldiers in exoskeleton power armor lay dead on the ground, blood pooling around them. Not far away, a completely bent rifle looked as if something had snapped it with brute force. The shattered exoskeleton armor was riddled with holes, and even the nearly two-centimeter-thick steel could not withstand the enemy's assault. Aside from the dense bullet holes on the surrounding walls, there were also marks made by sharp blades, and at the top of the corridor were claw marks, suggesting that the creature could traverse vertical walls.

"Activate thermal imaging!" the young man leading them ordered in a deep voice.

The dim lights flickered.

It seemed as if the research facility's energy supply had been cut off, leaving only the faint glow of emergency lights, casting a dark and eerie atmosphere all around.

Su Ziyu quietly fortified himself with a Spiritual Protection Field and followed the team deeper into the facility.

A massacre had just taken place here!

Along the way, they saw virtually no survivors. Aside from the advance team sent in earlier, they also found numerous facility members who had been killed, almost all with a single fatal strike. Most had been killed by having their hearts pierced. In just this short stretch, they came across dozens of corpses. Heavy iron doors had been torn open with brute force, and laboratories lay in ruins, piled with over a dozen bodies—both male and female, none of whom appeared to be combatants.

Soon enough.

Su Ziyu and the team reached the core area of the lab, where they saw a pile of undamaged bodies in their field of vision, basically all wearing lab coats, confirming that they were the researchers here.

These bodies were bizarre.

There were no external wounds on their bodies, and no signs of a struggle nearby. Many of the corpses lay quietly on the ground, some even maintaining the positions they had in life, dead in front of various instruments. Ahead was a spacious lab, and through the weak emergency lights, a completely shattered glass apparatus could be seen, with an unknown liquid seeping out, carrying a faintly fishy scent. The thick tempered glass was riddled with web-like cracks, with a few bullet holes, though not many. In the corner were three corpses of armed guards, unlike the others; their throats had been slit.

"I've seen this manner of death before!"

"Cerebral hemorrhage!"

"No external wounds, sudden brain death!"

A member of the Brotherhood said gravely, "When we were pursuing Solomon, our people died in just this manner."

The entire research facility was eerily silent.

Even Su Ziyu couldn't detect the creature's presence anymore. Dead researchers lay everywhere, not a single survivor to be found.

"Come take a look!" Leon's voice called out.

Su Ziyu hurried over and quickly found a body pinned to the wall in an office. It was a bald doctor, dressed like a scholar, crucified against the wall in a posture reminiscent of Jesus Christ, although there were notable differences, as a lever protruded from his chest, with two trays hanging from his lowered arms, making him look like a set of scales.

Blood dripped down, drop by drop.

"What does this mean?" someone nearby asked softly.

"I don't know," Leon shook his head slowly. "It resembles some kind of religious ritual."

"The creature might have fled."

Fled?

Su Ziyu frowned thoughtfully. He had only glimpsed the creature from afar, but his Sixth Sense triggered a strong reaction, leading him to retreat first. After all, this time they had brought a large force, making it unnecessary for him to confront the unknown creature head-on.

Moreover, the research facility's confined terrain made it difficult to fully exert his abilities, with Flashing confined to a narrow spatial range.

Yet unexpectedly, the creature also seemed to have turned and fled.

It seemed to possess considerable intelligence.

Perhaps, as Su Ziyu had been startled by it, the creature itself was also startled by him. After all, both parties had a certain amount of spiritual energy resonance during their brief encounter.

"Let's first find a way to restore the energy supply here."

"Don't touch those documents."

"Wait for the upper echelon to arrive before proceeding."
