Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 261: Water Cannon (Part 4)

If you ask which things make people feel the most helpless in the apocalypse, it is undoubtedly those things that survivors cannot control but must rely on.

For instance, now, the team Tang Xiaoquan is part of has overcome countless difficulties to board the city management vehicle, but whether they can ultimately break through the zombie encirclement and escape danger remains unknown.

Why? Because they cannot control the vehicle's start-up!

And this is precisely what's crucial for their survival!

The survivors at the back of the vehicle, being gathered together and busy fending off the invasion of zombies, have no time to worry about whether the vehicle will start.

But Zhao Yunhai is different. Positioned at the front, he not only has to face the zombies' clawing at him alone, but also must keep his composure to start the vehicle.

All of this is undoubtedly a monumental test of one's willpower.

Fortunately, the car windows are solid enough, or else Zhao would be the first to be fed to the zombies before he even started the car, becoming a "meal on the plate" for the zombies.

In panic, he picked up the key in his hand; to know that in such a pressing environment, even something as simple as picking up a key can be enough to drive a person crazy.

At least after Zhao pulled out the key, his shirt was almost entirely soaked with sweat.

"Bang!" A violent collision sound. Zhao, startled, almost dropped the key to the ground.

He blankly glanced at the window direction and saw a rotting zombie face pressed against the glass, baring its teeth, letting out hissing noises at him.

Suppressing his fear, Zhao took a deep breath and, with trembling hands, aligned the key with the lock below the steering wheel and shoved it in.

Watching the zombies swarming at the front of the vehicle, waving arms, trying to climb onto the front hood, Zhao's eyes flashed sharply.

Without a doubt, he had completed all the preparations, and now only one step remained: turning the key.

This step, obviously, was out of Zhao's control; success or failure was up to fate.

In the rearview mirror, Lin Junfu was still holding a "Water Cannon", vigorously fending off the incoming "enemies". The makeshift defensive barricades made of hardboard on the vehicle's sides had long been turned into a sieve by the zombies' frenzied attacks.

The lives of his companions hung by a thread, and the city management vehicle was about to be surrounded by zombies.

No more waiting. Zhao took a deep breath and forcefully twisted the key in his hand.

At this moment, time seemed frozen. Zhao could clearly feel the vehicle's body quivering slightly as the engine started.

Seconds later, the roar that signified the engine started finally resounded.

Success! The city management vehicle lived up to expectations and successfully started!

Zhao let out a sigh of relief, then his expression tensed as his eyes shot towards the beasts already climbing on the vehicle.

At this point, there was no point in thinking about anything else. Breaking out with all his might was the only thing to do.

Zhao instinctively glanced again at his companions at the back of the vehicle. He wanted to remind them, "Hold on tight," but both side windows were tightly closed, along with the cacophony of roars and curses outside the door creating a wall of sound.

Even if he shouted now, his companions probably wouldn't hear what he was saying.

Wang Qiang forcefully thrust a spear into a beast's head, an action he had repeated countless times; now he was like a numb machine, mechanically carrying out the movements.

Suddenly, the vehicle inexplicably jolted; the next second, the booming roar echoed, and he didn't even have time to react before the car suddenly lurched forward, promptly jerking to a halt.

"Damn it!" Wang Qiang cursed by instinct, almost getting thrown off by the sudden incident.

He wasn't the only one; the remaining companions were also stumbling where they stood.

But just as everyone was recovering from the previous scare, the vehicle "lurched" again, only this time, it was in the opposite direction.

"Bang!" A collision in reverse!

In an instant, everyone lost their footing, falling or kneeling, unable to stay standing.

"What's going on?" Lin Jun tried to maintain the aim of his water cannon, trying not to spray it on his comrades.

Upon hearing his question, Hu Xiaodong, who was lying on the ground, replied breathlessly, "It's the zombies blocking the way; Zhao can't break through!!"

Yes!! They had experienced the same issue more than once. Now, prompted by Hu Xiaodong, everyone suddenly realized it.

They needed to help Zhao clear the obstacles ahead, as Tang Xiaoquan thought of this, he stood up using the railing for support.

"Wang, Chao, help Lin Jun up!! Lin, forget the beasts at the back! Use the water cannon at the front to clear a path for Zhao!!"

Evidently, Tang Xiaoquan's idea coincided with Lin Jun's because as he was speaking, the latter had already stood up and turned the water cannon forward.

The white water column shot out in an unstoppable fashion, making the once arrogant and ferocious beasts instantly scatter like bereaved dogs.

Especially the unfortunate one that had just managed to climb onto the hood, still warming the cold car hood, but under the powerful force of the water cannon, it flew away.

10 seconds, or maybe less, Zhao felt the sky brightening when he opened his eyes again.

Undoubtedly, it wasn't the sky that brightened, but rather the zombies blocking the view had been entirely cleared.

Zhao didn't hesitate at all, decisively pressed the pedal, because he knew, these relentless "little cockroaches," given a bit of time, would regroup and block his path again.

"Quick! Everyone hold tight!" Upon hearing the engine become "frenzied," Lin Junfu realized Zhao was ready for an all-out push.

However, his reminder was ultimately a bit late, for almost as soon as he spoke, the city management vehicle rushed out like a fierce tiger descending the mountain.

The forward-moving vehicle continuously ran over the beasts still on the ground, creating sounds of flesh tearing, while the survivors at the back experienced severe jolts, losing their balance.

Tang Xiaoquan felt as if his stomach was about to churn out, the constant fluctuations genuinely made it feel like riding a roller coaster.

The agonizing ordeal lasted over 40 seconds before gradually stabilizing.

They had broken through!! This was the sole thought of the survivors experiencing a new lease of life, and when they collectively looked back, two long, narrow blood stains glittered eerily, reflected under the sun...
