A glint of understanding flashed in Naira's eyes when she heard this, 'So, he came here for her.'
She then sighed inwardly and under his anticipatory gaze, she shook her head, "I don't think so."
Max's expression fell.
"Why?" He asked.
"Because Noah had seen uncle Ben, her husband, getting caught. So, I believe that she might not have been able to escape either." explained Naira.
"I understand." said Max before walking out of the room, "I'm not leaving yet. So, be at ease and eat the bread calmly."
"Mm." Naira made a soft noise as she watched him leave. And as she did, to her puzzlement, she felt a tinge of disappointment and envy.
Then, she caught herself and shook her head.
'I'm someone he came to know just a short while ago. So, it's understandable I'm not important enough to him.' She comforted herself.
The next moment, however, she bit her lip, and thought, 'But… he did that with me… Shouldn't he care a bit more about me?'
Clearly, she had thought Max had sex with her when she was unconscious.
…
Max was in no mood to care about what she was thinking.
He arrived in Noah's room, questioned him about Professor Evelyn and unfortunately, Noah told him the same thing Naira had told him.
Not wasting any time, he walked out of their house and looked down the street's left end.
Because the street had a slight bend a few meters after Noah's house which made it slightly difficult for anyone who came from the right to see what was on the left part of the street.
Moreover, Max's attention was on Evelyn's house, so he hadn't noticed the bloody streets and dead bodies littering it.
Holding his breath, he walked over.
At a rough glance, he could count over 50 corpses, both males and females, old and young. The females' lower bodies, regardless of their ages—except the really old ones—were naked, affirming what Naira had told him about those people r*ping the women before killing them.
As for men, most had their throat slit, some had wounds on their chest, hands and legs broken and some had their heads smashed—the sight was extremely gruesome, easily able to make a normal person's heart tremble.
Max, however, didn't feel anything because he had done something similar just a day ago.
His gaze swept across each female. Whenever he saw someone resembling Professor Evelyn, he would get a little nervous.
Phew!
He exhaled in relief when he finished checking them because Professor Evelyn wasn't among them.
"Stay alive, Professor. I'll soon find you." He muttered before walking back to Noah's house. Noah had already finished the slice he had given him, but Naira was still nibbling on hers.
When she saw him enter her room, her eyes lit up, then she softly asked, "Did you… see her?"
"No. She seemed to have escaped." said Max while sitting behind her with his legs going by her either side and his hands wrapping around her belly, pulling her into his embrace.
Naira's breath hitched, then she said, relief clear in her voice, "That's good. I just hope she is still alive."
"Hm. I hope the same." Max muttered, putting his head on her shoulder and taking a deep breath.
While she hadn't taken a shower in two weeks and the room had the stale smell, surprisingly, she didn't smell bad.
Naira felt her heart stir from the intimate gesture and took a deep breath. Then, after hesitating for a bit, she bit her lips and asked,
"You like her, Professor Evelyn?"
"Of course." Max straightforwardly said, "I came here to look for her."
"Hm. She is charming." Naira hummed. Then, she took another small bite from the small piece of bread remaining, and asked in a subdued voice, "What… What about me?"
"You… I like you too. Otherwise I wouldn't have pulled you back from the brink of death." answered Max, his tone casual but serious at the same time.
Naira pursed her lips, 'You saved me by doing that?'
Her silence and the subtle shift in her expression told him what she was thinking.
Smiling faintly, he asked, "Do you remember when I knocked on the door?"
"Mm. I do." Naira nodded.
"Did you try to get up, only to fall unconscious?"
Naira furrowed her brows slightly, the look in her eyes turning graver as she realized what he said about her saving her from the brink of death might be true.
She nodded, "Yes. Do you mean–"
"Yes." Max said, "You were completely drained and that last strain made you collapse—you were dying. Fortunately, I entered in time, found out what was going on and… saved you. It might be hard to believe, but that's what happened."
Naira didn't say anything for a few moments.
Then, she asked, her pale face flushing slightly in embarrassment, "Then why did you…do that? Was it part of the treatment?"
"Indeed." Max calmly nodded and then before she could react, he raised his hand in front of her, "Look at my palm."
Naira did and was about to ask what she was looking when suddenly and silently, a large piece of Bread appeared on his palm, causing her pupils to constrict in disbelief.
"Touch it." ordered Max.
Naira did as instructed and touched it.
A moment later, it disappeared as silently as it had appeared.
Before her mind could comprehend what was happening, a cup appeared on his hand, then a small stream of water started falling into it.
Shhh!
As she watched, the cup was filled to the brim and the stream stopped.
Max then put the cup to her lips. Without his prompting, she took a sip. "...It's real."
Max stored the cup away and said, "Supernatural, magical stuff is real. So are the people with superpowers. It's just that their existence was concealed from us until now."
"Anyways, I also possess some supernatural abilities, and one of them is, I can heal my partners if I'm intimately connected to them. So, to save you, I had no choice but to do that." Explained Max, his voice calm as if he was talking about some every day, mundane thing.
"I… understand." Naira voiced out after being stunned for a while.
"No, you don't." Max said, kissing her cheek, "But you will soon. For now, you only need to understand one thing only."
As Naira turned her head to look at him, and waited with bated breath for him to tell what it was because she knew it was the most important thing, he said, gently grabbing her chin:
"And that thing is that you are my woman now."
Ba-Dum!
Naira's heart skipped a beat when she heard this. At the same time, the insecurity she was feeling earlier vanished without leaving any trace.
"You understand?" Max asked, looking into her pure brown eyes.
"...I do."
"Any objections?"
"...No."
"Good." Max smiled and leaned in, placing his lips on hers, sealing the deal with a kiss.
Naira closed her eyes, her long eyelashes fluttering just like her heart.
Just after a second, Max pulled back and said, "Now, hurry up and finish the bread. I'll take you and Noah to the Governor's Mansion."
Naira looked at him and bashfully nodded, "Mm. Okay."
'Beautiful!' Max thought.
