Done speaking, Max glanced at Robert and said, "Grandfather, I'm sure everyone will have questions related to Martial Artists… Please inform them about the reality of our world and what's going to happen once the radiation spreads."
Then, he turned to Jamie, "You tell them about the water contamination and the risks."
"Yes, Master." Jamie nodded in acknowledgment.
Tap! Tap! Tap!
Max walked off the stage and headed out with Vivian following after him.
Robert watched him leave before glancing at the nervous and bewildered crowd. Almost everyone looked suspicious, unhappy and… uneasy.
'He is in too much of a hurry and a little inconsiderate.' He sighed before shaking his head, 'But I guess he can't be blamed for it.'
Standing up, he walked up on the stage, swept his gaze across everyone and lightly said,
"Everyone, before I begin speaking about the important stuff, I want you all to stop worrying or let your thoughts wander. Instead, focus on what I say."
There was no need to mention that even though Max had become their leader and was an extraordinary man, they still hadn't completely accepted him and still trusted and felt comfortable with Robert.
So, when he asked them to pay attention, despite their worries, they did so.
When Robert saw everyone was looking at him, he began, "I know you aren't really comfortable with what you just heard, but remember the times we are living in. If we don't take steps to save ourselves, we'll be killed.
Remember, just a day before, how the mansion was on the verge of being destroyed? How helpless we were feeling?
Were those people going to pity us or let their morals stop them from tearing down the mansion gate, killing us and… humiliating our women?"
His expression solemn, he continued, "Who saved us from that fate? It was Max.
Do you think he wanted to lead us? No, he did not. Why would he uselessly take up our burden when he could just focus on saving himself and his loved ones, a much easier task?
But he still agreed to lead us on my request."
Robert paused, his expression hardening, "I hope you haven't forgotten that we have already pledged our allegiance to him. If we do not obey his orders, we would be the most ungrateful people.
Moreover, in the best case, he would just up and leave us… or he would do what he had promised—punish us. I don't think I need to tell you what this punishment would be."
"Now, with the unpleasant things said, let me tell you something about the Martial Artists like he asked me too." Robert said and began, "Martial Artists do exist and they possess superhuman strength…"
Robert spoke for over five minutes, his voice clear and words concise.
When he finished speaking, he nodded at Jamie and walked down the stage.
Jamie stayed silent for a while to let everyone digest the revelation Robert gave them. Then, he clapped his hands.
Clap!
The crisp sound made everyone look at him.
"Though the Radiation clouds have yet to arrive at this place, I found out that somehow the ground water the mansion uses is already contaminated with it. While the level of contamination doesn't seem to have affected you yet, this will soon change because the level of contamination is increasing every moment."
Announcing this, he paused and took in everyone's stunned expressions. Before they could begin to panic, he continued,
"However, you don't need to worry about going thirsty as long as you obey my Master."
Let alone others, even Robert, and Max's uncles furrowed their brows and felt unease when they heard about water contamination. Then, they heard his following words and became surprised.
"Does Sir Maxwell have a method to purify the water?" Max's third uncle, Evans, asked aloud.
Immediately, the panicking crowd focused on Jamie, who calmly nodded, "That's right. However, it isn't easy to purify the water. So, everyone will get a limited amount daily. If you want more, you need to use the merits to buy more."
"Now, I'm giving you ten minutes to get your thoughts in order. Then, we'll form the groups and leave to carry out our orders."
As soon as he said this, Hank and Tommy stood up and walked over to the stage.
"What is it?" Jamie asked, raising his brows.
"I'm Tommy, Max's best friend, and he is my father, Hank. Here for the group leader's positions and also to request your guidance on how we should better complete the task." Tommy said, a calm on his face.
When Max brought them to the Governor's mansion and they found out he had taken the charge of it, the father and son duo had already expected that Max would need people to do his bidding.
So, they had already discussed it between themselves and were mentally prepared. Therefore, while the others were still hesitating despite finding out how chaotic the world's gonna be, they had taken the initiative to come over, showing Jamie and everyone else their determination.
"Oh?" Jamie looked at them with an evaluating gaze.
"Come up." He said,
The duo went up and stood in front of him.
Jamie raised his right hand, palm facing them, and said, "Throw the hardest punch you can."
"You go first, old man." Tommy said to Hank, who gave him a side-eyed glance, took a step forward, took a deep breath and punched with all his might.
Whoosh!
Thud!
Jamie calmly caught it and nodded, "Alright."
Hank was a little disappointed to see that Jamie didn't give his evaluation, but he didn't say anything and stepped back.
Tommy stepped forward, put his left foot forward, twisted his torso before throwing the punch.
Whoosh!
Thud!
Same as before, Jamie caught it expressionlessly, and then said, "You two will lead the second and third group."
The duo nodded, relieved.
Then, Tommy looked at Jamie and asked, with an eager look on his face, "Brother Hulk, whose punch was more powerful?"
Hank's eyelids twitched in annoyance and also in concern because he didn't know if Jamie would get angry.
Fortunately, Jamie just gave Tommy a look upon hearing what he called him, mainly because he was Max's friend. And for the same reason, he bothered to respond, "Your father's."
"Tsk!" Tommy clicked his tongue.
After seeing Jamie didn't get angry, Hank chuckled and threw his arm around Tommy's neck, pulling him to the side, "You are still ways off from surpassing your father, brat."
"Just you wait. Once I awakened and learned some martial arts, I'll leave you in dust." Tommy shot back, throwing his arm off.
…
Jamie watched the father and son duo bicker, his eyes flickering.
He then glanced at the crowd and sure enough, their casual behavior seemed to have affected others, whose expressions told him that they were about to firm their determination.
He then shifted his gaze to the Foster family and saw Mark, Peter, Evans and others looking at him with not so pleased looks.
He met their gaze for a moment before closing his eyes, completely ignoring them.
While it was true they were Max's relatives, he wouldn't go out of his way to cater to them and would only give them what they deserved.
…
Robert glanced at his sons and it wasn't difficult for him to tell they weren't pleased with his decision to make Hank and Tommy the group leaders.
"There is no use frowning. It's your fault you let them take the lead." said Robert indifferently.
Mark and others flinched.
"You are right, father." said Mark, knowing they had disappointed their father yet again.
"But it's still not a good decision to give them the group leader's roles. I'm sure even Alex can defeat them." Riley, Peter's eldest son said. "He should have waited until he tested us all."
Robert glanced at him, and coldly said, "If you don't change this mindset, you won't amount to much in future."
Riley pursed his lips hearing this, displeased. But he didn't dare retort.
"Let's go. People are waiting for us to go up there." Evans said, stood up and walked up the stage.
Mark, Peter, Sunny, Riley, Ross, Aaron and Alex followed after him.
…
After walking out of the auditorium with Vivian, Max headed to the warehouse-type building where the food items were stored.
Upon arriving there, Vivian swept her gaze across the remaining items and frowned, "Hm? Only half is left."
"Don't worry." Max said, walked over to a table and waved his hand.
Shua!
Immediately, to Vivian's shock, a stack of large pieces of bread appeared on the table.
