How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World

Chapter 68: City Lord Burden

Seeing the word, the City Lord's anger rose to the maximum, his face first turning red and then black with rage.

"You insolent brat! My name is Li Kaishi! (李凯世) (凯世: Kaishi = Victorious Era)" the City Lord shouted in fury.

"What!? You did not spell your name for me, so how the hell would I know whether your name was dog or maggot? Besides, do they not sound the same? Goushi (狗屎: dog shit) and Kaishi (凯世: Victorious Era). Don't be such a nitpicker," Wei Chen retorted. Both he and the avatar of death raised their middle fingers at the City Lord, who was seething in anger.

Handsome Tall and Rich: [HAHAHAHA! Dog shit! Great name! Hahahaha! From now on, I'll call this guy Dog Shit! HAHAHAHAHA!]

Little Wealthy Demon: [Even if it's true, you shouldn't say it out loud! HAHAHAHA!]

Ethereal Snow: [Ufufu… you two are too much.]

"Ke… hehe…" Hearing the exchange, Dream Butterfly could not help letting out a small laugh while trying her best to suppress it.

Seeing a beauty laugh was like watching the arrival of spring. The guards and people nearby could not help but stare at her in mesmerization.

The City Lord did not know what the middle finger meant, but judging by that guy's punchable face, he was certain the gesture had no good meaning.

But…

As a respectable City Lord, he had already lost enough face today. This guy was clearly not a bloodthirsty demonic path cultivator. He had demonstrated that what he used was just a high level combat technique that the City Lord had never seen, and not some forbidden summoning technique that brought evil beings into the world.

And most importantly, he was not confident that he could take this guy on and win without getting injured.

City Lord Li looked at the corpses of the thirty men lying on the ground. Right now, his priority was to uncover the identity of the people who had caused trouble in his city.

The City Lord ignored Wei Chen and flew toward the thirty corpses. He took off the shawls covering their bodies, hoping to recognize them, but it was futile. These people were merely pawns, and he did not recognize any of their faces.

"What happened?" the City Lord asked the surrounding guests.

The matron stepped forward and greeted the City Lord.

"This humble woman greets City Lord," the matron said before continuing.

"As for what happened, I will slowly explain everything over a cup of tea. Please follow me to the lobby." She gestured politely, inviting him to follow her.

The City Lord followed her into the tower lobby and began listening to the matron's account of what had occurred.

Wei Chen, on the other hand, checked the pulse of the thirty people. He was certain that he had deliberately spared them. But how on earth had these thirty people suddenly died like this?

Seeing the words, the city lord's anger rose to the maximum. His face turned red and then black with rage.

He then looked toward the first man he had taken out. That man was still unconscious due to blood loss. Wei Chen walked toward him, and the city lord followed since they both seemed to have the same target.

"What do you want?" Wei Chen asked.

"I wanted to know if I know this one," said the city lord.

Wei Chen did not say anything and allowed the city lord to take off the cowl covering the man's face.

The moment the cowl was removed, the city lord's eyes constricted. He knew this man. Wasn't he one of Murong Wen's bodyguards, the personal guard of the young master of the Murong Clan?

Why was he here? No, more importantly, why was he one of the assailants who caused trouble in his city?

City Lord Li was now in a pinch. As a city lord, his primary duty was to protect the city from external threats. He would not interfere with internal struggles or conflicts between factions as long as those factions were under the jurisdiction of Azure River Province.

For example, in the conflict of interest between the Azure Sky Conglomerate and the Thousand Treasure Hall, even though each faction supported a different dao path and it was a conflict between the righteous path and the demonic path, he would not bother intervening.

They could kill each other for all he cared as long as they did not bring outsiders into the game. Based on that principle, he would intervene the moment outsiders came and messed with his backyard.

But this situation was different.

This man was the bodyguard of the Murong Clan's young master. He was an outsider, since the Murong Clan was a clan within Vermilion Bird Province. By this standard, City Lord Li needed to contact the Murong Clan and demand responsibility.

But the problem was…

The Murong Clan was a subsidiary clan, a branch of the Vermilion Bird Royal Family, and responsible for the military of the entire Vermilion Bird territory.

The difference in strength was too great. If it were only himself, he would not mind. At worst, he would die. But he was acting under the name of a city lord, and he had the entire city to consider.

If he let it go, it would affect his stance as a city lord and give his political opponents an opportunity to attack him. If he followed his principles, not only might his city face the ire of the Murong Clan, but his opponents would still use this situation to attack him.

The choice was clear.

Justice for a brothel, even if it was the number one brothel on the continent, was not important enough for him to offend the Vermilion Bird Royal Family.

Wei Chen noticed the complicated expression on the city lord's face and asked, "Now that you know, can you do anything about it?"

"I don't know this man…" City Lord Li said after a brief moment of deliberation and hesitation.

Wei Chen scoffed. He knew this guy was just spouting nonsense. Not know this man? Then why did he look as if he had stepped on something foul? But he only retorted in his mind and did not point it out.

He understood that as a city lord, there were more things to consider than personal ideals. And Wei Chen was not some hot-blooded fool who would do anything in his power to uphold justice.

He simply wanted to know why these people suddenly went bat sh*t crazy and launched a terror attack against a brothel.

Wei Chen looked at Dream Butterfly's goddess-like face. She smiled back at him the moment she noticed him looking at her.

He had heard that this girl was the number one courtesan of this place and that she did not sell her body, only her art and good company. And she was the first target during the attack.

Wei Chen looked at the crippled man on the ground. He remembered that this guy had shown no killing intent toward her. Did that mean the guy only wanted to kidnap her?

Wei Chen's mouth curled into a strange expression, a mix of contempt and amusement.

[Don't tell me… this sh*t happened because someone was horny!?] Wei Chen came to that conclusion in his thoughts.

"Achoo!" On the deck of the Murong Clan's large flying ark, Murong Wen suddenly sneezed.

On Wei Chen's side, his thoughts continued. [But who was the horny one?]

His gaze stayed on the crippled man. He wanted to know so that he could prepare himself and avoid that guy. A horny young master was a disaster. They could go as far as annihilating an entire sect just to get the girl they desired.

Wei Chen's mind returned from his own thoughts, then he looked at the city lord.

"Hey, Dog Shit, do you want to know who caused this?" Wei Chen asked with a teasing tone.

City Lord Li gritted his teeth in anger, a vein popping on his head. "My name is Kaishi, not Dog Shit! And no! I don't want to know."

"Why not? Aren't you the city lord of this place? Isn't it your duty to protect your people?" Wei Chen continued.

"I protect them by not knowing it! Not every truth is worth knowing!" the city lord said sternly.

This time, Wei Chen didn't retort. His knowing smile said everything, which irritated City Lord Li even more.

"I know… I'm just messing with you," Wei Chen said with a chuckle.

"But you have no problem if I want to know it myself, right?" Wei Chen probed.

"Hmph! Do whatever you want, I won't be responsible for it," City Lord Li said with a scoff before flying out of the Immortal Dream Garden and leaving.

Seeing this, Wei Chen shrugged and walked toward the cripple who was unconscious on the ground, then picked him up by the collar.

"Hey, lady," he called to Dream Butterfly.

"Ye… yes?"

"Do you have a quiet place for me to interrogate this guy? I want to know something," Wei Chen asked.
