For the next three days, Axel didn't go anywhere else.
He diligently worked on finishing the design that he and the girls decided on.
Of course, the entire time, Wisteria's entourage was with him too, watching his every move.
After completing the river placement and wastewater sewers, he quickly constructed a water treatment plant at the far eastern end of the walls.
The design was simple, but it was different from what a standard water treatment plant should be. Instead of using chemical and physical processes to "clean" the water, it used a weird, magical technology that purified the water before releasing it back into the river.
Although Axel couldn't understand the underlying principle behind it, it was cheap and ran on mana, so it was efficient too. He just had to charge it once a week, and it could work tirelessly.
After that, the next thing he worked on was the centerpiece: the castle.
For this one, he just purchased a simple five-story castle spanning roughly 200 meters on each side, going as high as 50 meters at its tallest point. This alone ate up all the space within the inner walls, so Axel had to move everything else outside.
After the castle was made, he worked on the main highways leading to the four cardinal directions from the castle. They were paved with bricks to ensure they wouldn't deteriorate too soon, and wide enough that three Humvees could parade through at the same time.
Finally, he worked on the various "districts" they had set up.
First was the residential district. For this one, he built one- or two-story residences for each family to stay in. This took up half of the area from the northern to the eastern sections.
The remaining spaces were set aside for commercial buildings, but since they had no use for such establishments yet, they were left empty.
South was the work district. It was where the Laboratory and the workshop were moved, close to the center. It was quite dangerous—especially the Laboratory—so he added a minor brick wall to enclose that section. Axel upgraded the workshop too, making it look more "presentable," while also creating a real warehouse right next to it.
Furthermore, Axel added a "forge" to the workshop. Something he had been hoping to include for a while now. With this, working with metals should be possible... as soon as they find someone who could use it.
Apart from those, he also added a "power plant" that provided electricity for the whole city. It wasn't made using diesel engines, though, but rather with the unlocked Hydroelectricity function, making use of the river's flow and a waterwheel to drive an alternator and produce power.
Axel was puzzled how it was able to supply enough electricity for the entire "city" when the river's flow was quite gentle, but... he blamed "magic" for its inner workings.
Finally, the west was where the garrison was built, with most of the surrounding area used as training grounds, as per Arianne's input. This was where the Valkyrie Knight Order would practice during their free time.
But since the space was a bit lacking, it didn't include a sniper's firing range for Eve just yet.
Only crossbows and swordplay could be practiced there.
In the meantime, she practiced by staying on top of the wall, shooting at targets they planted at 300, 500, and 1,000 meters respectively.
All of these were made within three days—no more, no less.
A speed that compressed work equivalent to half a year of hard labor into just a few days!
Such an achievement was, of course, celebrated by everyone.
In the newly built castle's large hall, everyone gathered.
The tables were filled with various dishes—ones cooked by the ladies, and others bought by Axel to make everything more "fancy" for their guests.
"Everyone!"
Axel, the host of the party, stood at the raised platform and spoke.
"Thank you for all your hard work. The modification of the camp is now done! With this, we can slowly expand later on, and increase our numbers slowly but surely!"
"Oooh!"
The girls raised an energetic shout, as if trying to liven up the mood. Axel smiled, feeling that they truly were pleased by all the things he built and added.
"Then, let's not stand on ceremony for too long! Raise your glasses and tankards!"
Along with his shout, he raised the glass of wine in his hand and yelled:
"CHEERS!"
His and everyone's voices overlapped—joyous and celebratory.
After he was done with his speech, he came down from the stage and moved to the table set for the bigwigs. There, Eve, Teruria, and Queen Wisteria were already seated.
"Welcome back, husband~!"
"Please have a seat, Sir Axel."
As soon as he approached, Teruria and Eve greeted him, leading him to the chair right between the two of them. Axel smiled wryly, following their arrangement even though there were many empty seats around.
"Congratulations on your achievement, Sir Hexel, son." Queen Wisteria also praised him.
Axel nodded respectfully toward her, not really used to being addressed as such, and acting humble for once. "I just did what I could, nothing more."
The Queen shook her head slowly.
"Whatever the case, it's true that you've built a city in just three days. That's a feat nobody could replicate."
"Well... It's all thanks to my abilities, really."
For some reason, Axel could feel that the Queen was gearing up toward something—something she was about to request from him.
To confirm, he glanced at Teruria but...
"Ehehe, this one's good too~!"
She was far too absorbed in eating to pay attention. Even the little penguin on her head was drooling at the food before them.
As for Eve, although she was listening, she had no idea what Queen Wisteria might be hinting at. Thus, Axel could only brace himself for whatever was coming.
"Do you know about the Demon Invasion?"
"Huh...?"
Axel paused, confused.
Of course, it was his first time hearing the term. Yet, it felt foreboding and oddly familiar.
"Could it be..." He gasped, stringing together the first thought that came to mind. "This zombie ordeal we're facing?"
With his answer, it was Queen Wisteria's turn to fall silent.
"...I guess it's roughly the same." She nodded. "But the one this world is suffering could only be called scouting at the moment—far from a real invasion."
"..."
Axel felt chills hearing that.
If this much was just scouting, and already enough to decimate the world... how terrifying would a real invasion be?
Just as he imagined the scale of it, the Queen continued.
"Actually, Witcheria is one of the frontline dimensions fighting against the Demon Invasion." She dropped the bomb casually.
Axel gulped.
He could already guess that whatever the Queen was about to request was going to be troublesome!
"As I've watched your skills for a few days, I'm confident that you can help us." She leaned forward. "Can you, please, help us rebuild our fallen fortress and regain a portion of our lands?"
"...I knew it."
Axel could only sigh.
Just when he thought he could finally spend his days peacefully, trouble had found its way to him once again!
