Supreme Paragon Reborn: Humanity’s Rise To Galactic Supremacy

Chapter 137: True Nature

'HAHAHA!' The Overlord erupted into maniacal laughter.

Was the reason for its earlier paranoia really a single Expert? An insect that had reached this place through sheer luck?

'Hilarious!' If the alien was still in its material form, its laughter alone would have split the very ground it was standing upon.

As the Overlord was having the time of its life, Michael observed it calmly.

The alien didn't have a material body, meaning he couldn't hurt it even if he tried. After all, in this life he had yet to gain the capability to challenge a living being to a soul battle.

However, should the Overlord challenge him… It wouldn't end until the demise of either party.

"Could it be that you are afraid?" He taunted the monster. There was the possibility that the alien would ignore him, and that needed to be avoided.

At a moment's notice the laughter of the Overlord ceased. Did a mere human just imply it would feel fear from an inferior being?

The audacity!

'I was planning on leaving him alone, but now…'

The alien had observed Michael and the surroundings carefully. The human didn't carry any treasure that could harm souls. In addition, there weren't any Lords waiting to ambush it in moments of weakness.

In simpler terms, Michael was alone.

Regardless of how delusional one could be, the outcome was already predetermined. The situation was akin to an ant going against a god.

'I suppose I can spare a minute or two to torture this fool.' The Overlord thought mockingly, initiating a soul battle.

Faster than one can blink, the two found themselves standing over a black sea.

Instantly the Overlord's soul began to shift into a material form.

Finding it pointless to assume a human's skin, it opted to wear its natural appearance instead.

"This is more like it." Michael mused, observing his foe nonchalantly. "On Triton, the General who challenged my soul hadn't grasped the concept of soul attack fully."

"Oh… Finally I can let out some steam!" With its transformation complete, the Overlord felt a great sense of contentment wash over it. Since the numerous soul battles it had initiated against the Lords had lasted barely a second, it hadn't been able to go all out.

But now it could take its time.

"Oh?" The alien exclaimed in amusement.

To its surprise, the human was faring much better than it initially expected. Rather than succumbing to the weight of the Overlord's soul, Michael was standing about a kilometer away, not showing any signs of struggle.

"I guess I can take a peek at his life." Curious, the alien glanced at the sea.

The souls of living beings always sent faint ripples through the water. By sensing them, the Overlord could unravel the lives of its opponents. This was how it had come to learn everything about the Lords.

"..."

Confusion etched onto its face.

'Am I making a mistake?'

For the first time in its long life, the alien doubted its abilities. The soul was meant to be the mirror to oneself, something that couldn't be hidden or altered.

Yet the readings it bore witness to made it question reality. Surely it was making a miscalculation with its approach!

"Why did you suddenly go quiet?"

Michael's question hung in the air, the Overlord too stunned to react.

"You aren't human…" The Overlord bellowed, its feet dragging it backward out of instinct.

Michael chuckled dryly. "Pathetic, really. You still believe the misconception that humans are beneath you? It's high time you realized the fact that we are above you in every aspect."

Deciding to engage with the alien, he stepped forward.

"!!!"

A mountain of pressure descended onto the Overlord. Before it realized what was happening, its knees buckled under its own weight. The corners of its eyes started to seep with blood.

"N—Not a human!" The being insisted, using all of its strength to limp backwards. Since its material body had disintegrated, it couldn't cut the connection between them no matter how much it wished to.

"Again, going on insisting that I am not a human…" Michael sighed in disappointment. Had the aliens always been this dumb, he wondered.

It's not like he was the child of some godlike creature, nor had he conducted some kind of experiments to change his very nature.

His body, mind, and soul were all entirely human.

The next step he took caused the limbs of the alien to turn into mush.

With each nonchalant step he took, the mighty Overlord felt its very existence coming undone.

"Not human, not human…" It cried repeatedly. Its ability to think rationally was disrupted from sheer fear.

Amused by the Overlord's reaction, a cold smile spread over Michael's face.

"I remember now!" He stopped when he halved the distance.

"After reaching a certain level of power, you aliens stop categorizing beings by their races and start judging them by their achievements and character. That's why you Etroxs can collaborate with other races. In the end, power is all that matters, right?"

Now it made sense why the alien was insisting that Michael wasn't human. It didn't mean its origin but his feats!

Yet that raised the question. He had been so focused on exterminating any alien race there was that he never stopped to consider how he looked from their point of view.

"Before I cast you into an eternity of torment. Tell me… What am I?" He asked the alien barely clinging to reality.

Weakly, the Overlord tilted its head upwards. The mighty body of an alien that could threaten the planet was now reduced to a bloody mess.

Michael was still far, yet the aura emanating from his body had become impossible to see through. It radiated a spiritual power so overwhelming that even the strongest beings would struggle to withstand it.

"You are a…"

A cold shudder ran through the Overlord's soul, as if even uttering the very word would cause its spirit to shatter in countless pieces.

Yet even that fear paled in comparison to what the alien felt when gazing at Michael's menacing smile. Defying his order wasn't an option.

"...Godkiller."
