'It's a bloodbath.' Michael could only shake his head. The video ended abruptly since the connection had been cut before it could fully load, yet it was enough for him to arrive at several conclusions.
'The General alien would have been a dire problem if it was alone. But with thousands of Elites fighting by its side, it's not hard to imagine why the quest of protecting Triton is categorized as impossible.' He thought bitterly.
'I don't think it specializes in close or ranged combat. Seeing the way the troops seem to freeze when close to its presence must mean that it attacks their spirit or their mind.' He concluded.
It was worse than he thought. Fighting against foes that could damage your mind and soul was infinitely harder. A wound to the body could be healed, but one to the spirit or the mind was an entirely different matter.
Being done with analyzing the video, he turned off the tablet.
"Did you learn something?" Ava asked, seeing that he was done with his assessment.
"You could say that. The General appeared to be capable of attacking the soul and mind. Though it's hard to say for certain." He said casually.
Ava's body visibly trembled. A foe that could attack such things was much harder to deal with normally. What puzzled her even more was the way Michael casually said such things.
"Why are you talking like you have fought against similar beings before?"
Michael couldn't help but chuckle. "No, in this life I have never encountered such foes."
With the conversation over, they reoriented their attention to the alien ship.
Once they entered the foreign domain, they enhanced their senses to the limit, ready to face any hiding threat that could still be lingering.
The captains spread over the army, covering the whole perimeter. That way they should be able to minimize the casualty should disaster strike.
Unsurprisingly, Michael and Ava remained close to Victoria.
"The more I look at their technology, the more I can't wrap my head around it." Enzo, who was close to them, mumbled.
"Not quite titanium but with similar properties." Victoria analyzed the material of which the ship was made.
Fortunately, thanks to its massive size, the corridors were wide enough for the army to pass through without any trouble.
"Prepare!" Roy shouted, getting into a battle stance. It had been only a matter of time until they sensed trouble ahead.
Of course, since they were still in the unstable ship, the army didn't bombard the approaching aliens with their artillery, not daring to damage the ship even more. No one wanted the ceiling to come crashing down.
Wanting to deal with the threat as fast as possible, the captains at the front engaged in combat with the generals close by their side.
'A few Higher aliens appeared with two Elites. We should be able to dispatch them quickly.' Michael sighed with relief, killing the first foe.
[Current slain forces: 2,013/20,000]
To his pleasant surprise it seems that killing any alien would aid progress to his quest.
With a wide smile on his face, Michael activated Berserker to its limit before killing as many foes as he could.
Meanwhile, the generals each took an Elite alien. With the assistance of the captains, the Elites quickly fell.
"From now on, we won't stop even if there is a threat ahead. We can't afford to waste more time than necessary." Victoria suggested.
Roy nodded. "Usually I will be more careful considering the ambush that could have ended my forces, but with base #1 urgently requesting help, we can't leave them waiting."
A few hours passed. The march continued relentlessly while the front forces dealt with any threat that still lingered in the ship. One advantage of entering the ship was that the aliens hadn't anticipated their actions and hadn't set any traps.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the sunrays of the other side reached the soldiers, who had started to get weary.
"We made it!"
"Bless be the generals!"
"Don't forget about the captains!"
The mood of the soldiers quickly skyrocketed. Many of them had begun to feel claustrophobic in the dark hallways of the ship.
Naturally, aside from the captains, no one else knew about base #1's urgent request for help. If the word that the strongest base had requested help from every available troop in Triton spread, the common soldiers were going to lose all of their morale.
Among the said soldiers there was a duo of reporters that seemed stubborn to remain in their ranks.
"Thank god, I thought that this was going to be my end!" Skylar exclaimed.
"We could have left a long time ago. It's just that you are too stubborn to listen." Luis mumbled.
"That's because I am sure there will be many more spectacular fights we can capture!" She pouted.
Luis could only shake his head. "I should have just left you."
Skylar grinned. "But you can't do that, right? Where I go, you will always follow."
"Shut up." Luis looked to the side, hiding his blush, causing Skylar to giggle.
BOOM!
However, the lively atmosphere was instantly silenced by explosions that resonated in the far distance.
"Isn't that the command ship that the strongest forces of Triton had been fighting all this time?!" Skylar exclaimed, eyes going wide.
She knew that it was roughly 400 kilometers in width, but knowing and seeing were two entirely different matters.
"How much I wished we didn't break the drone!" She mumbled before taking Luis by the hand and leading him to the front.
"I—It's so much bigger than I expected." Ava mumbled, a chill running down her spine looking at the massive alien ship.
'That's what she said! HAHAHA!' Devil's Tongue, which Michael had summoned, didn't miss the chance to make its usual remark, causing its owner to shake his head.
"To think that there are thousands of Elites there…" Leo wasn't in his usual calm mood as well.
Even if the soldiers had begun to feel exhausted, they couldn't just rest. With the battle visible from where they stood, they couldn't rationally ignore that there were other humans currently locked in a merciless battle.
"My granddaughter is there. It's high time I came to her assistance!" Bryce proclaimed, his eyes burning with determination.
Despite the fear that spread through the soldiers' hearts. Their resolve proved to be far stronger. The brotherhood they felt didn't allow them to rest unless the alien threat was completely eradicated.
"Humanity was born to inherit the stars!" With a collective shout to hype themselves up, they continued their march towards the battlefield.
