The Stegosaurus Armatus was dead. Its body plopped to the ground, laying sideways. The battle was over, well, almost.
The spikes that the stegosaurus launched were still in the air, and by all odds, they were plummeting down towards them, and were going to land in mere seconds.
Gutaxun and the humans on top of him had nowhere to run, and nowhere to hide. They could not predict where the spikes were going to land, it was impossible to know, so at this point, it would be stupid to run.
Anna was especially aware of this. She had common sense, and on top of that, she was beyond stressed out, which forced her to take preventive actions.
She had leaped off of Gutaxun, with her bare feet facing forward as if she was a spear herself, and within a second, she landed on one of the stegosaurus' many, triangle-like plates that were sticking out across its spine.
Upon impact, she managed to bend one of the plates out of place. She heard a crack when the plate bent, which gave her motivation to push through with her plan.
After plummeting towards the plate, kicking it with both of her feet, she afterwards landed on her back, on top of the carcass' leg. She was alright, and benefited very much from the fact that the carcass had toppled over before she even hit it. She landed very comfortably, and then managed to stand up in a split second!
Once she stood up, she rushed towards the loosened plate as much as she could, and rammed it with her shoulder. This time, she managed to snap the plate out of place entirely, and had her Dinosaur Strength to thank for this success, though she was also sure that she had cracked a few bones of her own already.
Motivated by the fear of death that could affect any one of them, and of course, while powered by adrenaline, she refused to let her cracked bones slow her down. She didn't give in, and grabbed the broken, pinkish-red plate, and then jumped back on Gutaxun's back.
The plate roughly weighed ten kilos, or twenty-two pounds, so it was very easy for her to carry. Her plan developed well.
Anna held the triangular plate over her head, and stood on her feet, right on top of Jimmy's face. Granted, the position was awkward with her privates so close to his face, her plan was still solid. The plate was big enough to cover all three of them, and she was hoping that it was strong enough to withstand the needle-like impact of those spikes!
"Brace yourselves!" She shouted.
Nechi and Jimmy were frozen in place. They feared for their very lives, and they felt horrible that there was nothing they could do about it, other than wait, and hope that Anna's plan worked out.
Their hope was awfully laced with wishful thinking. They could intuitively feel that the plate was not strong enough to withstand the blow, but they kept their hopes high anyway. There was nothing else they could do, after all.
Seconds later, the spikes started landing. They crashed down from the sky, close to the speed of sound, and before they landed, the spikes were accompanied by this horrifying, low-pitch whistle while they split through the air!
Four spikes landed within a single second, one after the other. One of them landed on the dead stegosaurus, sinking deep into its flesh, in its upper body, and two-feet away from Gutaxun's head.
The second one landed on the ground, though it missed Gutaxun's head by an inch, which was horrifying! Its velocity was strong enough to partly burn his scales, before the spike shattered into the ground, but although he was spooked, he did not budge. He did not move, and even hadn't started eating yet, despite his grumbling belly prompting him otherwise, because he had a feeling that something was going on, though he did not know what.
The third spike landed four meters to their left, and shattered. The fourth was too far away for them to care about it.
They survived the first round of spikes, but all four of them had landed so quickly that they barely processed it. They remained worried, and were sure they were going to die soon.
The second, and third round of spikes were more brutal, because they all landed almost at the same time, usually a third of a second from one another. One would think that the gods were trying to strike them down from the sky, as if they've done something to anger them.
Two more spikes sunk into the stegosaurus, causing a bloody mess. They had shattered inside its body, and at this rate the situation was ironic, because the spikes were supposed to land anywhere other than its body.
Even with fatal magic to its side, the Stegosaurus Armatus remained as stupid as modern humans described them. If it had survived Gutaxun's bite, its own spikes would've killed it anyway.
Three spikes landed in some short trees close by, shaving plenty of branches off upon impact.
Every thud the spikes made felt like a nail piercing their hearts. They were scared beyond measure!
One spike scratched Gutaxun's tail, and then it shattered on the ground below him. It managed to shave a quarter pound of his flesh right off, but he was alright. He only filinched for a second, but did not let out a sound. He could feel that the people on top of him were staying still, very still, so he mirrored them, hoping that they knew what they were doing. If he knew how to protect them, he would try and do so.
Little did he know, they were mostly trying to protect themselves. He was clueless.
The seventh spike bolted a foot away from Gutaxun, quite close to Anna and the people she was trying to protect. The whistle it made before it landed was almost deafening, and all the more terrifying!
The eighth, and final spike landed sixteen-meters away from them, so in the end, all four of them were fine. Relatively speaking.
Neither of them were nailed to death, and the only person who was hurt here was Anna. She had cracked her bones trying to protect herself and her loved ones, only for the spikes to miss them completely. Which was a curse as much as it was a blessing.
It took them a solid twenty seconds to understand that they were safe. They caught up with the fact that all the spikes had landed, without giving the three of them as much as a scratch in the process. They were alright.
"We're okay?" Nechi queried, her voice unsure. "Guys?"
A moment later, Anna's knees got weak. She threw the plate away, and collapsed on top of Jimmy, half conscious.
