Chaos calmed down and all the records stopped flapping. Mater opened his eyes. He had just learned about everything regarding the history of the Fish Wraith.
There weren't that many files documenting the encounters of previous hunters with the Fish Wraith. Those who did had really limited information.
"No wonder why those deputies didn't know a single thing about the dark belly of this town." Mater jumped to Selina's shoulder and meowed.
He pointed to the door.
"You finished?" Selina said.
Mater nodded. The pair left the records storage and returned to the hallway of the building. The Sheriff's Office was extra crowded that day because of all the fake hunters they caught.
"Please believe me! I didn't do anything wrong!" A member shouted.
A deputy pushed him into a jail cell. "Fraud is enough. You even extorted our townsfolk! Who do you think we are, huh? A charity?!"
Selina went past the deputies and got to the front desk. Carter was speaking with Timothy there.
"So yeah. A bounty hunter caught them all. She's very efficient, huh?" Carter said.
"She? I thought the bounty hunter was a man?" Timothy's brow furrowed.
Selina came in time for Carter to point at her. "There she is."
Selina forced a smile and waved at Timothy. "Hi…"
"You?! You were outside when Crow was interviewing me?" Timothy blurted out.
"Crow?" Carter said.
"Yeah… So he's a friend of mine. He doesn't like to show his face much though."
"I see. Those Roady Seven also said that some masked man caught them. I assume it is the same person?" Carter said.
"That's right, sir." Selina nodded.
"You have some courageous friends, Miss Isles. How are the files treating you?" Carter said.
"I learned quite a few things, Sheriff. But I didn't find much about the previous… Hunters. Why is that?"
"Excuse me for a moment, Tim."
Carter pulled Selina to the side and talked with her alone. "I keep those information separately to avoid it being leaked out. But don't worry. I made a copy for you."
The Sheriff took out a small memory card from his pocket.
"You can read it with a phone or computer."
"Thank you, Sheriff."
The black cat snatched the memory card unapologetically and kept it in his paw. Selina had to explain her cat behavior before they left the office.
"Please don't mind him, sir. He is… a bit evil."
Carter laughed it off and didn't think much about it.
Without anything to do, the pair left and went to the woods surrounding Ines Sota. They were going to the gathering place of the Red Keepers in advance.
On their way there, Mater read the information available in the memory card.
There had been a total of 75 Iron Hunters and 234 Bronze Hunters that had tried to solve this case.
12 Iron Hunters survived and kept operating.
20 Iron Hunters left the profession after the case.
23 Iron Hunters were MIA or KIA.
50 Bronze Hunters survived and kept operating.
35 Bronze Hunters left the profession after the case.
149 Bronze Hunters were MIA or KIA.
'If I remember correctly, these are military terms. MIA is Missing in Action. KIA is Killed in Action.
This wraith killed 172 Hunters out of 309 Hunters! MIA doesn't mean they're alive. It means the government was never able to find their bodies.' Mater thought silently.
The cat grinned widely then licked its mouth deviously. 'This thing is very powerful indeed. The Bounty mentions it is almost Hazard level. That is Rank 2 of this world's supernatural pathway.
But are you really that powerful? Let me show you the true power of a Rank 1 being."
The wraith might be close to Rank 2. But so was Mater. He was already level 7. His spells and servants were also much stronger than the average level of this world.
He wasn't scared of the wraith. Rather, the black cat was excited. He couldn't stop himself from snickering while reading the content of the memory card.
Selina looked at him with a confused look. "If I didn't know you, I probably thought you were planning to take over the world."
"Who says I'm not?" Mater meowed.
The black cat continued reading.
According to the surviving Hunters, the Fish Wraith had three skills.
The first skill, it had an innate self-healing ability.
The second skill, on land, its fish legs would turn into actual human legs and it could run quite fast.
The third skill, it could turn into a spike ball and ram into its enemies as an attack.
Apart from these skills, the Fish Wraith usually used its giant jaw to attack swimmers. Its teeth weren't hidden inside of the lips but completely exposed to the outside world. It also had really big hands with gills and sharp claws.
"This is weird." Mater stroked his whiskers in deep thought.
"What's wrong, Mr. Mater?" Selina could sense his contemplation so she asked.
Mater flicked his finger, calling out Aurora and Crow from the Dark Grimoire.
The black cat meowed, which Aurora translated to Selina.
"Master said these records don't show the full power of the Fish Wraith. It wouldn't kill this many hunters if it's this weak." Aurora said.
Selina rubbed her chin. "If it's really that dangerous, it must be smart. A smart creature won't use all of its ability on a prey it knows would get away."
The black cat clapped its paws. "Exactly my thoughts. We can only use this as references, not guidance. That wraith must have some hidden abilities that we don't know yet."
"Alright. We should buy some snacks with us if we're really going to ambush those cultists."
The group went to the General Store once to buy some food and drink to bring with them. They went inside the woods, at the place where the Red Keepers would show up today.
Mater, Selina, and Aurora hid in a bush quite far away. While Crow turned invisible and stood right at the location.
While waiting, through Aurora, Mater taught his woman how to actually channel and use her version of Chaos, which this world called Psycho Force.
"Alright woman, listen closely. That ward of protection provides you a skill. It is very similar to a spell. But also very different. Let me teach you how to use it effectively."
