CAT WARLOCK: This Darklord Feasts Upon Horror

Chapter 86: Ines Sota History

All of the members were knocked out cold. They had some broken bones here and there, and countless bruises, but they'd live.

"Should we interrogate them, Master?" Crow said.

The black cat stroked his whiskers in deep thought. He then meowed, "Sure. Find out where they found the Ankh Badge."

Crow's interrogation skill was undeniable. The trio continued to enjoy their ice creams while Crow dragged the leader to a dark corner and interrogated her.

He got his answers within minutes.

"So?" Mater meowed.

"There is a small newly formed river flowing out directly from Onoke Lake. It is located in the Onoke Swamp.

They found the badges at the end of the river. Other than that, they know nothing." Crow said.

"Well done. Let's call Sheriff Carter and have him deal with these delinquents." Mater meowed.

Selina went and collected all the badges on the fainted Roady Seven members. Some of it was Bronze while most were Iron Badges.

"What should we do with these?" Selina raised a badge and said.

"Just give them to the Sheriff also. We have no use for them."

Sheriff Carter and his deputies quickly surrounded the workshop. They went inside and cuffed the delinquents while Selina and Mater watched.

Aurora and Crow had jumped inside the book to avoid being questioned. The Roady Seven would remember Crow but Mater didn't think it was that much of a deal. Lowlife delinquents couldn't cause that much trouble.

Sheriff Carter collected the Badges and put them in a suitcase. He came to Selina and Carter.

The Sheriff tipped his hat as a greeting.

"Miss Isles. Mr. Mater." He said.

"Do you remember his name?" Selina's eyes sparkled.

"A familiar for a talented Psychic like you is no ordinary animal. Of course, I remember him.

I have already completed the mission for you, Miss Isles. I'm afraid I can't give you more than that." The Sheriff said.

"Oh?"

Selina quickly took out her phone and checked the reward. It was 500 credits and 5 tokens. It wasn't that much but Selina didn't feel disappointed.

It was an easy job with no NCE involved. 500 credits also took care of the last two nights in the motel.

"Thank you, Sheriff."

"I actually have another mission for you, Miss Isles. If you are interested, I will tell you about it."

"Of course, Sheriff."

Carter nodded and opened up the suitcase. Inside were all the Ankh Badges from the Roady Seven.

"These Badges mean something. And they may be the last objects that these Hunters left behind.

Now if we didn't lack manpower, I would have some of my boys go and deliver all these Badges back to where they came from.

To give it back to those who lost it. And to... You know, give their families some closure."

"You think these belong to dead hunters?" Selina said.

Sheriff Carter nodded. "I do. There have been many Iron and Bronze Hunters that went to the Onoke Swamp, Miss Isles. Some died. Some went missing. Some abandoned the profession.

I can't provide you any reward for it. But if you delivered these to their PDs, I firmly believe the police would reward you greatly."

Selina took the suitcase and looked at the Badges. She could already imagine the last moments of their owners.

"There are 22 of them." Sheriff Carter said. "Maybe even more in the swamp but no one went there now.

Ordinary folks don't know about those demons. But they're superstitious enough to stay away. I am also old and weak. I have no fight left in me any more."

"Don't worry, Sheriff. If I find more badges in the swamp, I will also collect them and bring them back to where they belong."

Sheriff Carter smiled and took his hat down. "I didn't think you'd agree, Miss Isles. You really have a heart of gold."

"Please, Sheriff. I only do what is right."

"Good luck on your journey, Miss Isles. I hope you will see that fish bastard under the lake."

Mater observed the entire exchange. Unlike Selina, he knew what the implications were for giving back these badges. He hacked the ACPD before so he knew returning lost badges would get a reward. However, the journey might be very long.

'Oh well. We can collect bounties on the way as well.' Mater thought to himself.

After the event with the Fake Hunters, the pair went on to have some brunch. The food in Ines Sota was extremely delicious, much more than Aeliz City. Selina thought that it might be because of their organic and fresh ingredients.

These people ate what they raised and planted while Aeliz imported them from everywhere else to accommodate its large population.

The meeting time of the Red Keepers was around midnight so they had plenty of time left in the afternoon.

Selina and Mater went to the Sheriff's Office to read about the Fish Wraith in the records.

There were stacks and stacks of documents relating to this wraith. When the black cat saw them, he finally understood why Carter needed so much time to gather the records.

Reading all of these alone would waste at least a few days, Mater didn't have that much patience so he just used Chaos to envelope the entire records and read them quickly like how he surfed the web.

The Fish Wraith's first appearance was 25 years ago. When the Great War had just ended.

After the war, people were hopeful, but the shadow of the past still haunted them. Supernatural events and NCEs were everywhere. Especially for a rural town like Ines Sota, there were even more.

One of them was the Fish Wraith. A bald head humanoid wraith with the lower body of a fish.

It wasn't those pretty female mermaids that the kids used to see in fairy tales, but a hideous monster that dragged people down to the bottom of the lake and killed them there.

The Onoke Swamp was not a swamp back then. It only had a lake. People came to the lake often to fish, have a picnic, or just simply to hang out. But more and more deaths occurred around the lake. Soon, the government had issued a fake reason to calm the citizens and warned them to not go near the lake.

According to the government, Onoke Lake had a hidden cave entrance that constantly released a pull that would make people drown.

It was complete fabrication but people believed it. But old people still told their grand kids about the horror of Onoke Lake.

Soon, the lake was abandoned. Its water became darker and more dirty. The surface of the lake expanded. Its humidity and water leaked out to the surrounding landscape, creating the dangerous swamp in the present.
