Even though Starseer Tower was considered to be something like a heaven for any researchers or scientists, that was actually not true.
After many years of development, this mighty place had been filled various kinds of politics. Fortunately meritocracy was still present here but personal connection was becoming more and more important with the passing of time.
Lance was a young scientist who was very confident and hopeful about his talent and future. After graduating early from a very prestigious university, he had immediately applied for the Starseer Tower as working here was the highest accomplish that any and all researchers dreamed about.
With his extremely good papers, Lance had managed to fulfill this long cherished dream of many scientists at a very young age.
So while he was entering this mighty looking building, his eyes were filled with pride for his talent, hope for his future and determination to leave behind a mark in the history of this world with his inventions.
All of that had happened 7 years ago. After working in the prestigious Starseer Tower for the last 7 years, the bright eyed, prideful and determined youth was no more. He had been replaced with a bitter looking old man who always looked tired and had dull, almost lifeless eyes.
Currently this man was sitting in the canteen of this high research department with a bitter black coffee in his hands. The taste of this coffee exactly matched the current situation of his life.
For the first two years after he had started working in the Starseer Tower, Lance was extremely happy with his work and his life. He had climbed the ladders extremely quickly and had become a supernova among the young researchers of the tower.
This fact had made him very arrogant and Lance had started to see even the senior researchers here to be in his same level. So he had stopped respecting them as much.
A year had passed after this and Lance had suddenly found himself in front of a wall. A wall that was blocking his progress. This wall was there not because of his lack of progress or talent but because of lack of personal connections.
In order of break through this, he had then started to madly try and find a way to make a good connection with the senior researchers. The same people whom he had started to look down upon some time ago.
So in order to mend this relationship, he had to start acting very subservient to them. Lance had a dream of saving his virginity for his future wife but in order to suck up to an elite researcher, he had to give up on his Virginity and he lost it alongside three other young men.
But with all this hard work and sacrifice, he managed to become a senior researcher after struggling for two more years. But even after that his life had not really changed. He had just gotten new superiors to suck up to.
As for his satisfaction as a researcher, that was also very rarely found. Most of his current research was on a subject that was not famous among the other researchers of the tower.
So even his most proudest of achivements were considered to just be mediocre and lackluster by his colleagues and seniors.
In this situation, the only reason why Lance was still here and not dead was because he had found the love of his life. Her existence was the only thing that was keeping him alive.
But three days ago, this love of his life had fallen ill with an unknown disease. In this day and age, an unknown disease was an extreme rarity. So some of his colleagues were even trying to start treating his wife as a living test subject and take her to the lab instead of the hospital.
Somehow Lance had managed to stop that form happening by burning some bridges and using his authority. But that was all he was able to do.
As this disease was completely unknown, even the best doctor here had no way to treat her. According to their estimate, she would pass away in two days or so.
Lance was sure that if his wife died than he would soon follow her to the afterlife very soon. There was no way he could keep living in a world that did not have his wife. That was just impossible for him.
...
With these thoughts in his mind, Lance suddenly heard some bright cheerful voices. They did not belong to any of the researchers that he was familiar with.
Actually it looked like these voices did not belong to any researcher at all and instead were from some tourists.
The area where he was currently was present in was a classified area where only a limited amount of people were allowed entry because of security concerns. So any tourist who was capable of coming here was definitely some kind of mega big shot.
If it was a month or two before, Lance would not have wanted to miss a chance like this and would have tried to suck up to this kind of big shot. But at the current moment, he was not interested in anything like that.
He was currently only waiting for the news of his wife's death. Immediately after that he was planning to end his measurable existence too.
As Lance was sipping his black coffee with a lifeless look on his face, one of the tourists approached him. It was a lady with golden hair whose presence was somewhat on the weaker side.
But when he actually took a close look at this lady, suddenly he realised that there was no way she had a weak presence. Her beauty was overwhelming and there was no way such a beautiful person would have a weak presence.
As Lance was looking the lady with a dazed expression on his face, she suddenly asked him a question with her beautiful voice -
"Dr. Armell, is this your research ? I found this to be very fascinating. Will it be possible for me and my friends to take a closer look at this ? Obviously if there is any legal procedure that we need to follow, we are definitely going to do that. And if you are not comfortable with sharing this research, I can understand that too."
The lady said all of this with a sweet smile on her face. Lance wanted to call out her bullshit and insult her in his rage. There was no way a bigshot like her would think of his worthless research as anything valuable.
She was most likely just trying to give him a ladder to make him go up and then push the ladder away when he was at the highest point. Lance had seen many powerful people with sick hobbies like this.
But just one look at Elena eyes and her sweet smile made all of his anger and worries to fade away. Then with a sigh, he pushed his research reports toward the lady and said in a low volume.
"Feel free."
Lance had no idea that this simple action had actually changed his fate and his whole life.
