Under Fang Zhou's command, the statue-like Skeleton sentinels waited until the Fierce Rats were within two meters. Suddenly, two cold glints of light flared to life in their hollow eye sockets.
Their Bone Claws slashed through the air with a sharp whistle, flashing coldly in the night.
A sharp, tearing sound cut through the air. Accompanied by a shrill, agonizing cry, the lead Fierce Rat was immediately cleaved in two by the sharp Bone Claw.
Blood splattered, filling the air with its metallic scent.
The other Fierce Rats showed no fear. Instead, as if provoked, they charged madly toward the Skeleton sentinels.
In the darkness, the only things visible were the cold gleam of the Skeletons' Bone Claws and the constant flickering of the Fierce Rats' savage, blood-red eyes and their glinting fangs.
However, the fangs of these mere Lower-Rank Apprentice Fierce Rats caused no damage when they bit down on the Skeletons' bones.
In contrast, each swipe of a Skeleton's Bone Claw killed at least one Fierce Rat.
As Fang Zhou directed the other Skeletons to form a defensive line at the cave entrance, he couldn't help but reflect inwardly.
Rats... creatures doomed to live in darkness, despised by all who see them. Even the mutated Fierce Rats are at the very bottom of the food chain in the Caves. Yet, when hundreds or thousands of them gather, they become a terrifying torrent sweeping through this world. The human-wave tactic is truly invincible!
Sensing the seemingly endless horde of Fierce Rats outside, Fang Zhou's expression grew solemn. Tonight is destined to be a restless one.
On the wasteland of the Caves, the swarm of Fierce Rats devoured every Demon they encountered. A bizarre mix of gnawing, the crunch of bone, and rustling squeaks created a chilling atmosphere that made the night all the more ghastly.
Some of the Fierce Rats that had devoured enough Demon corpses became exceptionally agitated and restless, as if injected with adrenaline. They emitted sharp, strange shrieks that echoed far into the distance like the wail of a siren in the night.
However, at the entrance to the goblin cave, this otherwise invincible swarm suffered a setback.
The Skeleton Army stood fearsomely, guarding the entrance impenetrably. Although the Skeletons had no weapons besides their claws and fangs, the individual combat strength of the Fierce Rats was pathetic. Every strike from the Skeletons drew a spray of blood, felling a Fierce Rat amidst its dying screams.
These Fierce Rats, however, exhibited none of the timidity common to ordinary rats. The power of Magic Energy had long since altered their genes, demonizing them and leaving nothing but instinctual savagery and bloodlust. One after another, the Fierce Rats were struck down by the Skeleton Army, but the thick scent of blood only drew more of them in, all rushing forward in a frenzy.
They seemed relentlessly determined to annihilate the Skeleton Army, as if they would not rest until every last one was destroyed.
As their numbers swelled, the Fierce Rats began attacking the Skeletons from all sides. Some even leaped directly onto the Skeletons, sinking their sharp teeth fiercely into their bones. Even if they couldn't bite through, they were determined to grind off even a sliver of bone.
The Fierce Rats' teeth were exceptionally sharp; an ordinary human's bones would be crushed in seconds. But the bones of these Middle-Rank Apprentice Skeletons summoned by Fang Zhou were not comparable to those of a normal human. Their bones were as hard as rock and as tough as steel. At most, the Fierce Rats' teeth could only leave a few scratches.
Furthermore, Skeletons were pure Undead Creatures. They had no nerves and felt neither fatigue nor pain. As long as Fang Zhou expended a minuscule amount of Spiritual Power to sustain them, they acted like tireless killing machines, continuously slaughtering any Fierce Rat that dared to approach and attack.
Watching the intense battle unfold, Fang Zhou felt a sense of relief. His deliberate choice to spend the night in the goblin cave had proven correct.
The cave was situated high on a hill and had a relatively narrow entrance, a terrain that naturally favored defenders. On either side of the entrance, the jagged rocks, steep steps, and crisscrossing stalagmites provided a superb terrain advantage for the Skeleton Army. He only needed to command his Skeletons to use the terrain and set up a few defensive lines to firmly withstand the Fierce Rats' assault.
If he had been caught unaware on an open plain and surrounded by the Fierce Rat swarm, allowing them to fully leverage their numerical advantage, defending against them would have been far from simple.
To conserve Spiritual Power, Fang Zhou didn't rush to use his other Skills. He only used "Resurrection of the Dead" when a Skeleton was severely damaged to restore its fighting capacity. When the Fierce Rats' assault grew too dense and placed too much pressure on the defensive line, he would use "Skeleton Arrow Rain" to clear the area.
"Hunting Points +0.5."
"Hunting Points +0.3."
"Hunting Points +0.2."
...
The notifications on his Hunting Recorder flickered nonstop. Fang Zhou glanced at it, a look of satisfaction in his eyes. He was already secure in first place on the leaderboard. After tonight's battle, the gap between him and the others would undoubtedly grow even wider.
Instructor Lu Hu had also told them that every 100 Hunting Points could be exchanged for 10 contribution points as a reward. As a hard currency, contribution points were something Fang Zhou could never have too many of.
Watching the swarm of Fierce Rats recklessly throwing their lives away outside the cave, his eyes burned with an intense heat. In his eyes, these aren't despised Demons at all; they are walking, rat-shaped contribution points!
The slaughter outside the cave continued for nearly an hour. The ground was littered with the corpses of Fierce Rats. The stench of blood from their bodies acted like a beacon, attracting many other restless Demons of the night.
During that hour, Fang Zhou also spotted several other types of Low-Level Demons, such as Fierce Snakes, Fierce Rabbits, and Stone-Skinned Lizards. However, they only appeared in small, disorganized groups of two or three. Before they could even get close to the goblin cave, they were completely devoured by the frenzied Fierce Rat swarm.
Just when Fang Zhou thought it would be a peaceful night and that the Fierce Rats were at their wits' end, a dense buzzing echoed from high in the distant sky.
His expression changed slightly as he immediately identified the source. Fierce Mosquitoes?
Sure enough, the buzzing rapidly drew closer, growing clearer by the second. Under the noisy, dense droning, even the Fierce Rat swarm, which had been firmly held back by the Skeletons, grew restless.
Soon, a faint, cold, rotten stench drifted down from above, and dozens of black shadows swiftly descended upon the blood-soaked battlefield.
This was a swarm of incredibly ferocious Fierce Mosquitoes.
An ordinary mosquito is minuscule, smaller than a pinky fingernail. But these Fierce Mosquitoes were each as large as an adult's fist.
They were completely black and exuded a chilling aura. Seemingly merging with the darkness itself, their presence made the entire battlefield grow cold and sinister.
