Evolution: From Little Devil to Devil Empress

Chapter 88: Descent [4] - Exchange

If she were to face such a strike at any other time, Liora wouldn't even have to expend any effort in order to defend.

Such a weak blow would have failed to cause any damage to the outer layer of her defense, much less seriously injure her.

Yet, Liora understood very well that she could not do such things in her current state.

Thus, sensing the golden sword approaching her, she swiftly sidestepped out of its trajectory.

Unfortunately, though she managed to dodge, a knight on the side seemed to have anticipated her movements.

Holding a giant metal shield, he brought it in front of him and embedded it into the floor, blocking her way and keeping her within the siege.

Seeing this, Liora could only kick forward, pushing her feet against the metal shield and launching herself backwards.

This abrupt movement allowed her to barely dodge one more sword slash, but she had yet to escape from danger.

A dozen knights were still surrounding her tightly, cooperating seamlessly without giving her any chance to escape.

Although these knights were all ordinary people, the armor they wore and the weapons they wielded seemed to be blessed with extraordinary power, increasing the power of their attacks significantly.

Feeling the faint holy power emanating from the weapons around her, Liora's face turned stern.

With her rich combat experience, she should have been able to deal with this team of knights.

But the underground room restricted her area of movement, forcing her to fall into the opponents' momentum.

Helpless, Liora could only do her best to evade the several attacks coming in her direction, unable to form any counterattack of her own.

In fact, such a situation should have favored her.

Even though her strength had been suppressed, her endurance was still beyond that of ordinary people.

Sooner or later, the knights around her would end up exhausted, rendering them powerless to resist.

Unfortunately, Liora couldn't afford to wait for this to happen.

Using the back of her hand to fend off a spear attack, Liora raised her head and peeked at the Priest standing behind the knights, who had not taken half a step since the fight began.

In the Priest's right hand, Liora saw a large amount of light gathering, slowly transforming under his control and taking the form of a real object.

"This should be the extraordinary power of this world.", Liora realized.

Though unfamiliar with this world, she immediately understood that she could not give the Priest the time to finish activating his spell.

With that in mind, she tried to think of a way to break the current delicate balance.

Her consciousness wandered through her body and checked its state, while her mind went through the several abilities in her arsenal, trying to find if there was anything that could be used.

Shadow Manipulation, Spear of the Blighted Sun, Silent Domain...

Liora attempted to activate each of her abilities, but her efforts resulted in nothing.

She was unable to activate any of these abilities, as if they had been plundered away by an invisible will.

Just when Liora was contemplating whether she should grab the blonde woman and escape, she suddenly discovered something unusual.

Or rather, she noticed that one of her abilities could still be used.

Surprisingly, this ability was not one of those she had created using the System, nor one of the many she had awakened as a result of her advancement.

Instead, it was the one she had developed on her own—Tongue of the Abyss.

Feeling the invisible power rising from her chest and going straight through her throat—as if it were looking for an outlet to vent through—Liora didn't hesitate.

Parting her lips, she opened her mouth, using the ability that she had almost forgotten about.

Instantly, loud shockwaves emerged from her throat and rushed everywhere, turning into countless garbled, inexplicable, and eerie words that echoed throughout the underground room.

Impacted by these words, whether it was the knights or the trembling woman sitting in a corner with a lifeless head in her arms, they felt as if a heavy hammer had smashed them on the head.

As if they had reached an agreement beforehand, they all froze at the same exact moment, their eyes losing their luster and turning empty.

"It's now!", Liora thought silently and, using this as an opportunity, she rushed forward.

She didn't choose to strike at the defenseless knights, but instead bypassed and ran behind them.

Her target was clear. It was the only person unaffected by her large-scale attack—the Priest.

In an instant, her figure appeared beside the Priest, and she reached out with her right hand, aiming at the left side of his chest.

Although her movements were so quick that an ordinary human would have trouble detecting them, the Priest was far from being ordinary.

The moment Liora flashed before him, he reacted.

A hesitant expression flashed across his face, but it quickly disappeared.

The moment it did, the spell he had been casting all this time was abruptly interrupted.

However, the light in his hand didn't disperse.

Instead, it transformed into a short sword entirely made of holy light, which he swung at Liora.

He didn't try to defend against Liora's blow, as if he was ready to die with her.

Taking into account the Priest's decisive actions, the right course of action for Liora should have been to dodge or, at the very least, defend.

But Liora did neither.

Mirroring the movements of the Priest, she also gave up defending, putting her entire weight into the very next strike.

The next moment, both their attacks landed on their opponent.

Liora's right hand easily tore through the Priest's skin and pierced through the left side of his chest, while the Priest's sword cut straight through Liora's waist, separating her body into two.

As he collapsed to the ground with a thunderous bang, the Priest felt his lifeforce slowly pass away.

However, he showed neither sadness nor any regret. A satisfied smile appeared on his face, followed by a trace of relief.

"I—I did it...", the Priest muttered, knowing that although he was about to die, he had managed to fatally injure his opponent.

In his opinion, it was absolutely worth it to exchange his worthless life for the world to be at peace.

Just when the Priest was feeling a strange sense of accomplishment, though, the sound of something scraping against the stone floor reached his ears.

Raising his head with difficulty, the Priest turned to look at the source of this sound, only to discover that that "something" was the upper part of Liora's body.

With only the upper part of her body remaining, she pushed her bloody hands against the ground, struggling to move in his direction.

Moments later, she arrived right above him and stretched out her hand with a ruthless expression.

The crimson veins in her armor pulsated creepily before they jumped onto him and, like countless tiny ants, began devouring his body piece by piece.

Before long, the painful cries of the Priest—who had now completely lost his composure— echoed throughout the underground room.

At the same time, a barely audible swishing sound could be heard, as if something was being sewn together.
