My Goblin System : Levelling up with my SSS Class Devouring skill

Chapter 184

"Did I—" she started, clearly worried she'd done something wrong while sleeping.

"You fell asleep beside me," Satou interrupted gently. "That's all. Nothing inappropriate. Just two people resting after a traumatic day."

Relief flooded Seraphine's expression. "I wasn't sure. Sometimes my instincts kick in when I'm sleeping, and I..." She trailed off, embarrassed.

"You were fine," Satou assured her. "Actually, having you here helped. Made it easier to rest knowing someone was watching over me."

"I should check on my people," Seraphine said, but she didn't move. "Make sure the rebuilding is progressing. Reassure everyone that we survived."

"Probably," Satou agreed. "But you could also take another few minutes. Let yourself actually rest instead of immediately jumping back into demon lord responsibilities."

Seraphine considered that, then made a decision. Instead of pulling away, she shifted closer, her head finding a comfortable spot on his chest. "A few more minutes won't hurt anything."

They lay together in comfortable silence, both of them aware this was a pivotal moment. What happened next would set the tone for whatever relationship was developing between them.

"Satou," Seraphine said quietly. "When you're recovered... when we return to your settlement and I meet Lyra and Jessica... what happens if they don't approve of me? What if they see through to all the manipulation and games and decide I'm not worth the risk?"

"Then we figure it out," Satou replied simply. "But I don't think that'll happen. If you show them the same vulnerability you've shown me, the same willingness to be genuine, they'll see what I see."

"And what do you see?"

"Someone who's lonely and tired of being lonely. Someone who's built an impressive civilization but forgotten how to build personal connections. Someone who's ready to try something different but terrified of failing."

Seraphine was quiet, processing that assessment. It was accurate in a way that made her uncomfortable—not because it was cruel, but because it was true.

"I am terrified," she admitted. "I've seduced countless people over three centuries. I know how to make someone desire me. But making someone genuinely care about me? Making someone choose me not because I've corrupted them but because they actually want to be with me? That's completely new territory."

"Then it's a good thing I'm patient," Satou said, his hand coming up to stroke her hair. "We can take this as slowly as you need. No pressure to be perfect. No expectation that you'll transform overnight. Just... honest effort to build something real."

Seraphine lifted her head, looking at him with an expression that was equal parts hope and fear. "And what if I fail? What if I can't break three hundred years of patterns? What if I fall back into manipulation because that's all I know?"

"Then I'll call you on it," Satou replied. "Gently, probably, because I understand how hard change is. But I won't let you hide behind masks. If we're doing this, we're doing it honestly. That means calling each other out when we're not being genuine."

"That sounds terrifying."

"It is," Satou agreed. "Vulnerability is always terrifying. But it's also the only way to build something that lasts. You can seduce someone into temporary devotion, but you can't manipulate someone into genuinely caring about you. That requires trust. Honesty. Vulnerability."

"I'm not good at any of those things."

"You're doing them right now," Satou pointed out. "This entire conversation has been vulnerable and honest. You're better at this than you think you are."

Seraphine searched his face, looking for any hint of deception or hidden agenda, but found only sincerity. It was still strange, having someone look at her without desire or fear—just genuine interest and care.

"I want to kiss you," she admitted suddenly. "Not as part of a seduction. Not to manipulate or corrupt. Just because I want to. Is that okay?"

"More than okay," Satou replied. "That's exactly the kind of honesty I've been talking about."

Seraphine leaned down slowly, giving him plenty of time to pull away if he wanted. But Satou didn't pull away. He met her halfway, their lips connecting in a kiss that was gentle, tentative, and entirely free of any magical compulsion.

It was nothing like Seraphine's usual kisses—those were designed to overwhelm, to seduce, to make the target desperate for more. This was just... a kiss. Simple. Genuine. Two people exploring a new connection.

When they pulled apart, Seraphine was surprised to find she was trembling slightly. "That was..."

"Different?" Satou guessed.

"Terrifying," Seraphine corrected. "And perfect. And I want to do it again but I'm also worried I'll ruin it by overthinking."

Satou smiled. "Then stop overthinking. We've got time to figure this out. No rush. No pressure."

"But I want—" Seraphine started, then stopped herself, clearly wrestling with something.

"You want what?" Satou prompted gently.

Seraphine took a breath, gathering courage. "I want to be close to you. Not just emotionally, but physically. I want..." She paused, struggling with how to phrase it. "I want intimacy that's real. Not a seduction. Not manipulation. But I don't know how to separate those things. For three hundred years, intimacy and manipulation have been the same thing for me."

"Then let's find out together," Satou said softly, his hand cupping her face. "No manipulation. No corruption magic. No games. Just us. Being genuine with each other. Can you do that?"

Seraphine's breath hitched. This was what she'd been afraid of—being asked to be vulnerable during intimacy, to let someone see her without the masks and magic that usually protected her.

But looking into Satou's eyes, seeing the genuine care there, she found herself wanting to try.

"I can try," she whispered. "I want to try. With you."

"Then that's all I'm asking," Satou replied, pulling her closer. "We take this at whatever pace feels right. And the moment you feel yourself falling back into manipulation patterns, you tell me. Deal?"

"Deal," Seraphine agreed, her voice shaky but determined.

She leaned in to kiss him again, and this time there was more heat behind it. Not from corruption magic—she was consciously keeping that suppressed—but from genuine desire. From three hundred years of loneliness finally finding a crack of light.

Satou responded, his hands moving to her waist, pulling her closer. His touch was gentle but firm, respectful but clearly interested. It was intoxicating in a way that had nothing to do with magic and everything to do with being wanted for herself rather than what she could provide.

"Satou," Seraphine breathed between kisses. "I want... I need..."

"Tell me," Satou encouraged. "Use your words. Be honest about what you want."

"I want you," Seraphine said, the admission both liberating and terrifying. "I want to be with you. Completely. But I'm scared I'll ruin it. That my instincts will take over and I'll turn this into another manipulation."
