Chapter 97: Getting to Know Each Other

This time, Michael was utterly dumbfounded. Due to the shock, he drove the car from the road, before he stopped the car on the side.

He gazed at Kate, wondering if she was okay up there. After all, even though they had interacted a few times, they had only met 4 times before.

First when she arrested him, second when he had called for the police to come and pick up a gangster that had broken into his house.

As for the third time, it was when he went back to the orphanage, and the fourth time was the evening of the same day, where they dealt with the gangsters.

It could be said that this was the 5th time that the two of them were meeting. So, what made her think of marriage, when they had not even began dating?

But as soon as this question appeared in his mind, he suddenly seemed to understand.

In those big families, the issue concerning marriage was usually in the hands of the older generation.

They would find the partner that they deemed to be suitable, not suitable for the person that they were selecting for, but for the growth of their family.

And after the selection was made, it was almost impossible to be able to change this decision.

So, the marriage usually ends up happening, and the couple would have to build a relationship after marriage, learn to love each other. If it did not work, then it would be a marriage that they only survived in.

Seemingly, it seemed to be a good option to find someone for themselves, rather than waiting for a selection. Of course, the person that was found had to be one with the qualifications that the family would approve of.

What Michael had thought about was exactly what Kate was thinking about.

First of all, Michael was the same age as her. There was not much difference between them, and the age gap wasn't huge, most probably just a matter of months.

That was something that suited her just well, as she did not want to end up marrying someone that was way older than her.

According to her, she felt that being married by someone that was older than her, they might not share the same views.

On the other hand, another thing that made her ask this question was Michael's mysterious background.

Even though he had said that all the wealth that he currently possessed was from his uncle, she did not know much about this uncle.

But apart from that, just the skills that he had demonstrated, they indicated that he was not simple.

With those skills, it proved that he had more abilities, as compared to some wastrel of a young master that her family might have found for her.

For most of those young masters, they only knew how to squander the money that their parents had made. They did not have much ability, and neither did they suit her taste.

This was the exact reason why she did not interact much with Raymond and the others. After all, they were in the same boat with those young masters that she detested. She believed, those that would have to marry them would definitely repulse them.

With the wealth and the skills that Michael possessed, he definitely had the qualifications of being an in-law of the Morgan family.

As for if he was going to marry into the family, or she would have to marry into his family, that would have to wait.

Back to the present...

Michael deeply gazed at Kate, before in the end, he simply sighed.

"I understand the situation that you are in. That is unfortunate for you. But for the issue of marriage between the two of us, I'm sorry, it cannot happen.

For me, I don't plan to just marry anyone. I want to marry someone that I love, someone that can understand me, and I can understand them.

Even if it is going to take years to find her, it doesn't matter. I'm just 18 anyway, I still have quite a few years that I can use to search.

And for the time being, I don't think that I am in a situation that can allow me to be into a romantic relationship." Michael said honestly.

He did not detest Kate, and neither did he look down on her due to the decision that she had made. If not for her family making some arrangements for her, she would probably not have mentioned something like this.

But unfortunately, Michael wanted to love someone, before getting married. Additionally, nobody was putting any kind of pressure on him on the marriage issue. So, he could just take things slowly.

Kate was actually a good option, that was something that he had to admit. But still, apart from familiarity from meeting a few times, there were no any other feelings between them so far.

Michael would not be tempted by the beauty, only to end up regretting after marrying her, in case they did not match.

It might be true that at the moment, considering their age, most probably, it would just be an engagement. But even then, it would not be that easy to be able to break the engagement with those big families.

With his abilities, as long as he increase his net worth and connections, it would be pretty easy for him to be able to deal with the Morgan family.

But, some unnecessary conflicts were what he did not want, no matter how small they were.

Upon hearing Michael's response, Kate seemed to have anticipated this. She did not seem disappointed, as she simply said, "Okay, let's give it some time. Maybe, if we interact a few more times, you might end up falling for me, you never know."

At the same time as she said those words, in her mind, she was already thinking of a solution.

She had to make sure that she went back, and talked to her mother. She had to use all the methods possible to make sure that this engagement did not go through.

But if it was impossible to cancel the planned engagement, then she would have to find a way of delaying it. Even if she would have to stay at the dorms at the police station, she would do that.

Michael simply nodded, as he thought, that would work as well. So, he continued driving towards his place.

"By the way, when did you come to Brenton city?" Kate suddenly asked.

"The following day after we dealt with those gangsters." Michael responded.

"Huh? That fast? I thought that it would take a few days for you to be able to come here. And by the way, where is grandpa John and the children?" Kate was slightly surprised as she asked.

"I rented a few apartments for them in the school district. I will take you there later on." Michael replied.

The two of them then continued, chatting randomly, without going into details on anything.

During the few minutes together, through the chatting, Michael came to kind of understand her, and her personality.

It seemed, she was quite a sweet girl, but was quite prideful as well.

As for the way that she treated him when they first met, it was simply because of her hatred towards gangsters. And when she noticed that Michael was almost the same age as herself, yet he had already began engaging in criminal activities, she was even more irritated.

Michael could understand her. After all, this feeling of hatred towards gangsters was something that had been there since she was young.

Losing her father, someone that loved and dotted on her, she of course had to hate the reason why he disappeared.

It did not take that long for them to get back to his apartment. And when she saw where he was staying, Kate was left speechless for a moment.

This place was not that high-end, and the price of the apartments here was what most of the middle-class families could afford.

With the wealth that Michael possessed, was it impossible for him to purchase a villa in a good residential district? Was there any reason for him to stay in an apartment block?

Despite all these questions in her mind, she did not ask any. Instead, she just followed Michael, and the two of them entered the apartment.

Just as she entered, she noticed that there was someone else in the apartment, currently busy in front of a laptop screen.

And when the two of them entered, this person raised his head, before looking at them.

As he stood up, he greeted her, "Hi."

"Hi." Kate responded, despite her surprise.

Michael on the other hand gave the introductions. "Kate, this one here is my personal assistant, Adrian. Adrian, this is Kate, a friend of mine. In case she comes looking for me, you can just let her in."

The two of them then shook hands, before Adrian went to the kitchen to prepare two glasses of juice for them.

From the way that Kate was behaving, it seemed that she had not realized that Adrian was not a human, but a bio human.

"By the way, I just remembered something. If you have time, could you help me in improving my marksmanship?" Kate suddenly asked while the two of them were waiting for Adrian to return.
