Bery and Valerie left their castle two days after the king left. For Bery this was a chance to revisit the town of Korilis, but it was also a chance to go on a date with the dragoness. Ever since they got more members inside of their home, they'd had less time to be alone together, so the two decided they would go on a stroll down the mountain.
The kitten gripped her dragon's hand. "It feels nice today. Pretty soon it will start to get colder."
Valerie chuckled. "Worry not, my little kitten. When the days get colder, I will become your personal furnace. As you already know, fire magic is my specialty."
Bery nodded. With her free hand, the kitten tried producing a stream of water. The same nauseous feeling bubbled within her, but she was able to make a small water flow with her hand.
Valerie grinned and pet Bery's head. "I can tell you've been trying your best to learn magic. I am glad you're not overdoing it. There is plenty of time for you to learn everything."
The kitten thought back to the words of Yuri telling Bery that she would live forever. Bery turned towards her dragoness and decided to ask. "Is it your plan to make me immortal?"
Valerie smiled. "It was my plan, but it's already been set in motion."
"That makes sense...Wait, what?"
"Silly kitten, you didn't even notice at all. The mana within your body has been changing ever since you saw the goddess. If she didn't do that, I would have found other means myself, but I'm glad she did."
Bery looked at her dragoness with wide eyes. "Why did neither of you tell me about this?"
"Whoa, kitten. I didn't do anything. It was all that goddess of yours fault. She is the one who made you immortal." Valerie turned her head away from Bery and looked at the clouds. "Hey! Look up there, it's a kitten shaped cloud."
Bery's eyes flickered towards the sky, but then she was scooped from the ground into a princess carry.
"Gotcha!"
The dragoness leapt into the air and fired off a dark ring of smoke into the sky from her mouth. The puff of smoke formed into the shape of a cat's head.
"You tricked me!" Bery pouted, her cheeks inflating while they flew through the black cloud. She was surprised that passing through it didn't send her into a coughing fit.
"Hey, I didn't trick anyone, kitten. This is the way of dragons. We think of reality, and then we make it."
Bery released a deep breath. She wanted to feel frustrated, but the cute antics of the dragon threw her off. "Stop changing the subject. How did you convince the goddess to give me immortality?"
Valerie blew a ring of smoke from her nose. "I didn't convince her to do anything. She decided to do that herself. Though, I had wanted to do it anyways. And you are not immortal yet. This is a slow process that your mana has to adapt to."
"Is that why I feel dizzy every time I use magic?"
The dragoness nodded and landed them on a tree. "Once that feeling finally passes, you should be able to use magic more easily. Though, don't stop what you are doing now. It's still good to use it while your body adjusts. It will get you used to feelings like mana sickness."
"Mana sickness? I've heard of it before. I thought it was only strong mages that felt it?"
"I have no idea what they are teaching in the human kingdom, but that's not the case at all. New mages can feel mana sickness as well. It happens when the magic power within you fails to adjust to the stimulus you give it. That spinning feeling in your gut is similar to mana sickness."
Bery tilted her head. "Have you ever had mana sickness?"
The dragon nodded in affirmation. "Yep, I have had it quite a number of times over my life. Though, the end result was always devastating for the other party. No matter how sick I got, you should have seen the other guy."
Bery giggled and tried to imagine what it would be like. After watching Valerie for so long, she didn't expect that there existed anyone who could be on par with the dragoness. In terms of raw strength, Valerie was superior to everyone, and in terms of magic power, she could not imagine something that could rival her.
The kitten looked out of the tree they were standing in, and she saw the town of Korilis not very far away. For Bery, it was surreal to imagine that this town had now become theirs. In the early morning sunlight, there were many people moving within the streets.
Autumn's market stalls were set up around the plaza, and there were many artisans and other craftsman selling their goods. The kitten could even spot the merchant's guild building standing upright in that same street, and her eyes flickered towards the inn she always stayed at.
Lastly, her eyes trailed back towards the edge of the forest where a lone blue tree stood and several people gathered around to watch its leaves fall. Many of the leaves had already started changing their colors from dark blue to cyan. They fell away from the branches and dotted the grass below.
Valerie smiled while watching her kitten look around. "Where should we visit first? They will definitely take note of you coming back here. Our planned date might not go over so easily."
"You think they will remember me?"
"They'd never forget a kitten that's as beautiful as you. In fact, out of all of the people in this world, there could be no beast man or woman that would rival you. If I were to put you on a scale, even Kanai herself…"
Bery shut the dragon up with a kiss on the lips. The kitten's face had turned tomato red, and she wanted the endless compliments to stop. Even if she loved hearing them from the mouth of Valerie, her heart could not handle their ferocity. The dragoness's compliments came like a raging magic storm and swept up the kitten like mana sickness.
Valerie grinned after they finished kissing each other. "I've already figured out many of my kitten's weaknesses. Don't worry, I will be well-behaved for you here."
Bery sighed and rolled her eyes. "You should be well-behaved for the people that live here. Technically, they are all your citizens now."
"Do you think they would even know that? I imagine they still think they're part of the human kingdom. Most of them are continuing about as if their lives haven't changed."
Bery nodded. "That's what I always enjoyed about this place. The people here are very kind. I hadn't expected that people in the capital would be different. That King Crassius really put a dent in my expectations of humans."
Valerie shrugged. "It's the same with any race. We all have our good apples and bad apples. Don't forget that it was a dragon who inspired the king to behave in such a way."
"Yeah, I haven't forgotten," Bery said before giving Valerie another peck on the lips. "But you are a good apple." She took another taste to measure. "A very good apple."
Valerie leapt from the tree and spread her wings. "We should start our tour. Otherwise, I might devour you before then."
The dragoness flapped her wings and landed in the center of the park with the blue tree. She set her kitten down, while people gathered around.
Whispers spread among the people around them. All of the gathered humans stood in awe of the winged dragoness. Even though she was not in her dragon form, all of the people seemed to silently understand. It was hard not to with the wings and the horns on her head.
Valerie coughed into her hand and cleared her throat. "There is no need for you all to stare at me. I've no intention of eating any of you nor any intention of destroying…"
Her words were cut off by a middle aged man with a bright smile. "You're Valerie, aren't you?" The man's gaze flickered to the kitten. "And you, I remember you! You're Bery."
The dragoness was the one who looked at the man with surprise. "Wait a second…"
It was a different woman who answered the dragon's silent question. "We already heard all about it from His Majesty. We know that you will be the one to own this land."
Upon the commotion, more people started gathering, and a little boy piped up from within the crowd. "So it's really true!? We are going to be led by a dragon! Rawr!"
And then there was the voice of a little girl. "Miss dragon, can you show us all what your dragon form looks like? Look, I drew a picture of you."
The people let the little girl walk forward, and there was a small drawing on a piece of paper of something that vaguely resembled a dragon.
