Chapter 50: Bad Luck

Elmagse trees were the trees that knocked out all the students during the TSEUCAEE lesson and that was what they treated throughout the double period of Ecobiology.

The students learned a lot about them. Some of the things learnt was that the trees only produce one – inedible – fruit throughout their lifetime, how the height of each individual tree is proportional to the force absorbed through its lifetime, and how the trees could be damaged effectively without it being able to absorb attacks, amongst other things.

The class ended uneventfully as everyone protested against gauging the magnitude of the attack a fully grown elmagse tree would expel when fully charged by kinetic/spiritual energy.

Xenon, Aoi, and Jason spent their break time with Jeage in the infirmary as they had nothing else to do. Felicity called Xenon to her office to tell him the first stage of the procedure would commence that night, Jeage's affected organs would be the first thing to take care of, that was the first stage.

The trio left the infirmary as break ended to go the most boring class till date – Runes and Rune Technology. Xenon studied chapter one again, as diligently as the day before and managed to increase the quest's progress to fifteen percent.

The next and last class attended was The Study Of Each Unique Characteristics Of Abilities Ever Exhibited, TSEUCAEE, and they did some actual learning today which didn't include any student being harmed.

"Abilities are mainly classified into four categories, they are physical, elemental, psychic and metaphysical." Copious started. "Abilities in the physical category are those in which spiritual energy affect a person's physiological make up, it could be the enhancement of an already established, general human attribute, or the rewriting of a person's physiology." Copious explained.

"For example, Xenon's speed is an enhancement type physical ability, Juan's ability to 'morph' - change his body's structure and configuration – is the other type, while Jacquez's ability to change his size is in between the other two types. The physical category is further divided into numerous parts which I will not have the leisure of mentioning today.

"The elemental category of abilities is that in which people employ their spiritual energy to summon, create, manipulate or twist the forces of nature, such as Jason here who can change one form of elements to another, or Xenon – again – who is able to generate lightning. The elemental category is also sub divided into other parts.

"The psychic category consists of abilities that aims to defy the laws of nature, the ability to heal, Jacquez's ability to nullify our spiritual energy dependent abilities, Arkham's ability to delve into minds and so on. This category is also sub divided.

"And finally, the metaphysical category. It's abilities are the most rare and most powerful abilities above all others. Those who have abilities that fall into this category are basically able to manipulate reality and the laws of nature through their spiritual energy, this category is also the most taxing on the physical, mental and spiritual strengths of their users. Example of an ability in this category is the number ten, Arnetta's ability to stop time.

"This category is not sub divided as there are only nine of such abilities, that is your assignment to be submitted on our first class next week." Copious smiled as the class groaned in protest.

"There is one more category I didn't add because it is not really a category. This uncategorised category consists of numerous abilities that do not fit into any of the others, examples are my abilities, Bèishù's ability to create materialised and concentrated balls of spiritual energy, and Aoi's ability – which I shall not disclose."

"You're still not gonna tell us what your ability is?" Xenon asked Aoi who was seated between Xenon and Jason as usual.

"I'm sorry guys, but I can't tell you yet..." Aoi replied while avoiding both Xenon and Jason's gazes.

The trio separated after the last class as Jason was starving, Xenon wanted to visit Jeage, and Aoi was avoiding them both.

"Jeage! You did tell me you had a girlfr..." Xenon was saying as he saw a girl by Jeage's bed when he came to see him, but stopped abruptly when he saw her face.

Xenon had barged into Jeage's room in the infirmary as usual and had misunderstood when he saw a girl seated by his bed, at least until he saw it was Tamara, Jeage's elder sister.

"Hey, I forgot you exis-studied here also." Xenon said when he saw the familiar unfriendly face.

"What are you doing here?" Tamara frowned and surveyed Xenon while plainly showing her hostility.

"In case you didn't know, me and your brother are both first years and I am literally the only reason he's still alive. So stop looking at me like I came here to slot your throats and be a act a bit grateful, will you." Xenon replied sharply and walked into the room, sitting on a chair at the side of the bed opposite the where Tamara stood.

"What a nerve you have to talk to me like that." Tamara said to Xenon and then turned to Jeage. "And you, since when did you start mixing with filth, with this... illegitimate orphan?"

"Hey, Tamara th..." Jeage was trying to reprimand his sister but was cut off by Jeage.

"Don't waste your breath on her Jeage, it's not her fault, lunacy just happens to run in the family." Xenon yawned as he waved his arm for Jeage to not reply.

"Jeage, tell him to leave now!" Tamara said through gritted teeth.

"What? No! He saved my life and is my friend, yes, MY FRIEND!" Jeage stressed the words when Tamara looked at him in shock. "I won't send him out!"

"Okay then, I'll do it myself!" Tamara stormed out the room, and a minute later she was back with one of the staff in the infirmary, urging the staff to send Xenon out.

"I'm sorry miss, but I can't send him out of the infirmary, he is an acquaintance of the Grand Healer Felicity." The man Tamara had brought spoke apologetically. "Unless, the patient wants him out, there's nothing I can do." The man said and looked to Jeage for confirmation.

"I don't want him out, take her instead, she's disturbing me with her tantrums." Jeage said, avoiding his sister's eyes.

Tamara looked at her brother, she was shocked angry and hurt all at once that she just stood at the doorway dumbfounded.

"Miss, would you please leave peacefully." The man pleaded with Tamara.

"I'll leave." Tamara said softly and turned around to leave the room. "He's a bad omen Jeage!" Tamara said aloud before she walked away, her footsteps echoing off the corridor.

"You know you didn't have to do tha..." Xenon was saying.

"Shut up!" Jeage cut him off, his eyes were bloodshot. "I need to rest, the first procedure is tonight." Jeage laid in his bed on his side, with his back facing Xenon.

"I hope it goes well." Xenon replied softly and saw himself out of the infirmary.

"I already feel miserable enough without you, don't bother me system." Xenon muttered.

As he walked towards his room, he wondered what Jeage saw in him to choose him over his sister.

"I wouldn't do the same. If I had the choice, I would choose Melcrow over and over again." Xenon said to himself. "I wonder how she's doing back on earth, I hope Groggins us taking good care of her.

"Ah," Xenon sighed. "There's no use thinking about her now, I probably won't ever see her again." Xenon slapped himself in the face with reality but he still didn't let go of the hope of seeing her again.

In the midst of his thinking, Xenon had not paid attention to where he was going and he suddenly collided with someone. He staggered back a few feet before he realised what had happened.

The person he had walked into had fallen unto the ground, he walked towards the person to help whoever it was up. Xenon bent down, grabbed the person's hand and dragged them up.

As he dragged the person up, the person's face came close to his and he saw to glowing green irises, it was Regina.

'How is my luck this bad today to come across her after what happened with Jeage.' Xenon was thinking inwardly as he sighed.

"Are you okay?" Xenon asked her.

Regina yanked away her hand which was still in Xenon's and walked away without saying anything. Xenon watched as she went down the corridor he was coming from.

"Wait a minute, how did I get into the tower." Xenon muttered as he realised he was already in Erythros tower, his mind had been somewhere else as he walked. "And why is my hand wet?" Xenon noticed the hand with which he grabbed and pulled Regina up was wet.

'Come to think of it, the skin around her eyes were glistening as if they were wet too, was she crying?' Xenon thought to himself. 'Whatever, it's not my problem anyway.' He dried his hands on his trousers and continued towards his room.
