Chapter 60: The Spirit and The Stranger

"I'm done, professor." Juan said after gathering everyone's assignment and putting it on Derp's table.

"Okay, thank you Juan. I see everyone was able to do the assignment, good." Derp said before going to lean on his table. "So, let's get into today's topic. A quick summary in this world's history. A very degraded version."

"Now there are two parts to this. The history before the Great War, and the one after that. The Great War was a fierce, drawn out event in history that affected all life in our planet, I will not go into it much because it is something you will learn later on.

"As I said, there are two major parts to our history, but the influence of the Great War on the world was so large that it almost wiped out all of our history preceding that time. In simple terms, a lot of the different cultures and history of our world was lost in the war, that why I mentioned earlier that this history of the world I'm about to narrate will be a very degraded one."

Derp snapped his fingers and the light in the classroom dimmed, the atmosphere rippled and then everything changed. Everyone found themselves in a tranquil, green landscape where plants, animals, spirits and humans alike were living in harmony.

And that was not all, the students had also been fit somehow into the picture. Their dressing had somehow been changed to fit the ancient dressing of the humans in the landscape.

"Do not panic everyone, I have created this very detailed illusion to make you understand things better. This is basically my routine for every important, or interesting topic." Derp explained.

"If you all look at miss Regina, you'll notice she appears greyed out. That is because in this age, demi humans didn't exist yet." The illusion warped and changed to what appeared to be an even more ancient time.

This time there were no humans, just a bunch of glowing dots of light scattered around a very dense forest where different animals came into view from time to time.

"This is what we believe to be the advent of intelligent life on our world, the appearance of spirits. All spirits on our world – no matter the grade they are now – all started as these glowing dots, as lesser spirits.

"We do not know where spirits came from or how they were created, all we know is that they were the first intelligent creatures to walk our world and their influence is what gave rise to us humans.

"As the spirits went about their activities upon this world and grew, the energy they released into the world – now referred to as Àse or Spiritual Energy – gave birth to mutation in some particular prehistoric creatures we have no record of anymore, which in turn led to the birthing of the next set of naturally intelligent beings, we humans."

The illusion changed to a part of the dense forest where blurred out creatures warped into ape like figures which then gave birth to the first set of humans; hairy, bulky and hump backed.

They then produced offsprings who produced offsprings and so on, with each generation coming closer to what humans looked like now.

"After hundreds of years of evolution, humans were spread all around the world and outnumbered spirits 100 to 1. It was around this time that humans made the first amicable contact with spirits, all other meetings between both parties beforehand had resulted into conflict and death of humans, because we couldn't hurt spirits then.

"As I was saying, the very first human came in contact with a spirit and got to leave with all parts intact, and even managed to befriend the spirit. Can you guys guess what this human's last name was?" Derp looked around the class but no one knew the answer.

"Nobody knows what his real name was anymore, but he was one of the first members of the Prasedymum family." He paused to allow the students to express their surprise and throw fascinated gazes at Xenon.

"What we managed to find out about him was that he was usually referred to as 'stranger' by the spirit in their ancient tongue, and the spirit itself was at least of the Apex grade – which was impressive at that time.

"It was also recorded that the spirit was never in a corporeal form, but in a bright white light the shape of man. And it was also said that the stranger developed white hair with time, but it's probably the effect of old age. A lot of humans died young then and he was one of the first to overcome the boundary of a hundred years so that hair stuff can't be trusted.

"Anyway, after the Prasedymum stranger's friendship with the spirit, the Prasedymum family started to grow and progress at a fast rate. This was mainly because the spirit taught the stranger, who in turn taught his kinsmen how to harness the free roaming spiritual energy. This allowed the Prasedymums to grow in strength and vitality, which in turn granted them an easier life, hence their rapid expansion.

"Later on, the Prasedymums awakened a strange power which made them completely dominate all other humans-and don't get me wrong, it's not the forming of an ousia or awakening of abilities like we do know."

"Then what was it?" Jacquez asked.

"Nobody exactly remembers, only a Prasedymum would know, but it was similar, yet very different to what have now." Derp answered and some students started to murmur shoot glances at Xenon.

"I thought we were learning about the world, what's all the stuff about Prasedymums for?" Xenon said aloud.

"I'm getting to that, it's all intertwined." Derp replied. "So, the Prasedymums awakened something strange, but the strangest thing wasn't that. After the awakening, the Prasedymums surprisingly shared their knowledge of assimilating of spiritual energy with the rest of the world, notable people and peasants alike.

"But that wasn't the strange thing." The illusion which had been showing a faceless man and a man made out of white light suddenly changed to a group of people and glowing lights.

The group of people was leaded by the faceless man, and the group of glowing lights was leaded by the man of white light.

"The strangest thing was that the Prasedymums started to withdraw from spirits gradually, until they completely isolated themselves from spirits totally." The illusion showed the two groups separate slowly till there was a thick wall of darkness between both of them.

"Nobody knows the reason." Derp sighed and his eyes rested on Xenon for a while before moving away.

"So, humans started mingling with spirits through the influence of the Prasedymums and our development skyrocketed. The spirits taught us their language, which is where runes were derived.

"We discovered that some words of action in the ancient spiritual language impose instructions upon nature when infused with àse. Oh, did I mention that the word 'Àse' infact means authority in the spiritual language. And it was one of the action words that couldn't be converted into runes.

"Don't ask me why, ask Yadok or Aevin, my subject is history, not Runes or Spiritual studies." Derp said as a student raised her hand to ask a question, she dropped it.

"I hope I also mentioned that we humans weren't the only ones who benefited from the occurrence of spirits on this world. All natural life, and even none living things benefited from it, some even more than us, they were here before us after all.

"That's why there almost nothing on this world with a weird quirk of its own. If we didn't learn to harness spiritual energy, we would have died out a long time ago.

"Back to the story. So, the Prasedymums withdrew from human and spirit relations – but still protected us in times of need – after awakening something strange, and we humans harnessed spiritual energy and developed very fast.

"Fast forward a few hundred years, the first human awakened an ability and the world went wild, thinking that was the peak of what a human could obtain.

"Fast forward a few thousand years, the first human developed his ousia to the 4th stage and everyone thought that was the pinnacle of human evolution. And that was where everything started, the advent of the Great War. The truly dark times."

The illusion which had been showing progressing humans changed to one in which spirits of different shapes and sizes all sprouted red, malicious eyes and looked down on humans, releasing bone chilling pressure.

"Wait, did I mention that they were numerous, diverse tribes who all had their strongholds in different places all over the world?" Derp asked and was met with negative replies throughout the class.

"I can't believe I almost strayed from the original point of this lesson." The illusion all over the class broke and the light in the classroom became normal again.

"According to explorers, the world is a globe. But I haven't seen the world from outside before so we will make do with this for now." Derp made a large rectangle hologram in front of the class, featuring various landscapes.

"Now, according to what I have read and researched they were at least five continents before, the fifth continent was either very large or made up of little broken landmasses, and Askesis and Vasileia had always been lone standing islands.

"Now, the reason that the rest of us humans are all mixed up, residing on two continents and three islands, and the reason a continent was specially created for the demi humans is all tied to the Great War.

"So, do you all want me to go into the different tribes and races of we humans before the great war and where previously belonged to who, or do you want me to go into the Great War first?"

Almost everyone vouched for the great war.

"Okay then, Great war it is." The whole classroom transformed again.
