'Go away, you're disturbing me.' Xenon brushed the system off and started the impromptu test with the rest of the class.
He had managed to raise his understanding to fifty percent when he helped Jason study on Sunday, hence, the higher completion reward.
— — —
'Thank goodness I did the quest!' Xenon sighed in relief as he got out of the runes classroom.
The questions set were entirely from chapter one, which suited Xenon well. The majority of the class, however, were regretting not listening to Yadok's instructions.
Jason came out of the classroom a short while later and Xenon went over to put his arm around his shoulder. If it wasn't for Jason, he would have struggled more with the test.
"Hey, how was it?" Xenon asked cheerfully.
"All I know is I tried my best. I should be able to scrape a pass." Jason replied. "You?"
"As long as professor Yadok Mark's fairly, I'll definitely not fail the test." Xenon answered. "What do wanna do before History?"
"I don't know, have a drink or something." Jason replied dryly.
They walked to a nearby restaurant, sat at a table, ordered something to drink to pass the time, and left for History the moment it was time.
"Settle down, settle down!" Derp said as he walked into the classroom. "Since we went down memory lane last class, and all the topics before the emergence of demi humans are going to be the boring types, I have decided to go into the Great War today." Derp announced much to the satisfaction of the class.
"Now, are you all ready?" Derp asked and was greeted by positive nods and remarks.
The light in the classroom dimmed and the space in front of the classroom – from the front seat to the wall opposite it – changed into a very realistic illusion where spirits of different shapes and sizes all sprouted red, malicious eyes and looked down on humans, releasing bone chilling pressure, almost like watching a movie in 3D.
"As I was saying in the last lesson, we humans achieved the fourth ousia stage and the problem started from there. Whether it was jealousy, pride, or something else, we have no idea, all we know is that the spirits were not okay with our continuous rise in power.
"The people then knew from the beginning that something like that was bound to happen, and they tried as much as possible to make sure their relationship with spirits was smooth, but that all changed when a particular spirit spiked up the ego of a particular – and large group – of spirits.
"Esu, a very slimy and despicable spirit who was said by other spirits to be in constant search of greater strength, managed to get into the head of a large number of spirits who either felt threatened, despised, or felt they were meant to rule over us, over the world.
"This caused a large stir in the spiritual community. In the end there was a great divide between the spirits. Esu and some 70% of the spiritual population wanted sovereignty over our world, while the thirty percent left were against it?
"Esu and his seventy percent decided that we humans don't have the right to benefit from the energy they release into the environment for free, and we either had to pay for it, or work for it.
"To put it simply, since spirits have no use for money, our only options were death or slavery." Derp stopped to sip some water. "Of course, we would never agree to such outrageous demands, so we struck a compromise with the remaining thirty percent of spirits. We agreed to work together for as long as possible till Esu's tyranny was overcome. That was the first ever spirit-human contract.
"Of course, Esu and his gang wouldn't just lie in wait for us, doing nothing. The moment we entered an agreement with the spirits, Esu and his legion declared war on humans and the traitorous spirits."
The 3D movie in front of the classroom switched to what seemed like a recreation of the war. There was mass destruction brought about by the use of a plethora of different and unique destructive abilities.
"What you can see here is barely a tiny slice of what really went on during those grueling years of conflict. Every child, seven years and above in that era were made to cultivate and start training for battle the moment they awakened an ability.
"It was during this time that the power of the Nine metaphysical abilities came to light. It was also then that the Prasedymums numbers depleted steadily as they were the major assault force in the war.
"We lost a lot of people and things, but so did the spirits. The war went on for almost twenty years without end. After almost twenty years, both our and Esu's side had to call a truce and end the war.
"Our world started to groan, shake and shiver on response to the war at some time, and in order not to destroy the world, the war was ended.
"We and the spirits retreated to this side of the world, while Esu and his legion retreated to the other side of the world. If you all pay attention, you'd notice that I refer to the opposing spirits as Esu's legion, well that has a reason.
"As we made a contract with the spirits, Esu also made something like a contract with the spirits that supported him. We don't know how he did or even if contracts between spirits is possible, but all we know is that since the start of the war, all of the spirits that supported him were bound to him.
"I remembered I mentioned earlier that Esu was a spirit that always searched for greater strength, and the war was just another scheme to enrich itself. Esu never wanted to rule humans, he just simply wanted to be the strongest, that, with the fact that most of the spirits under Esu were weak was the reason we didn't lose the war." Derp sighed.
"What became of the spirits that followed Esu?" Jacquez asked.
"To put it simply, they became his minions and retreated with him to the other side of the world. Those spirits, though retaining their abilities lost their identities. We refer to them as specters and they are quite easy to identify.
"Specters are things you will learn about in your SSS classes. They are the main reason we keep away from the other half of the world – the dark side, that is their and Esu's territory.
"The influence of Esu and his specters on the dark side of the world has brought about severe mutations to all life on that side. The most common characteristics of these mutated creatures from the dark side is their undying wrath and bloodthirst. They are simply referred to as mutants and you will learn about them in Ecobiology.
"You will learn more about the Great War in your second year. This period is about to be over, so, class dismissed. Keep all your questions for next class." Derp declared.
"Have you seen either a mutant or specter before?" Jason asked Xenon as they exited history class.
"No, why-no how would I?" Xenon replied.
"Well, I have seen a mutant before, my father brought one home." Jason bragged.
"Why would your father bring a bloodthirsty beast home? That is not normal." Xenon exclaimed.
"It was fun. It chased me and tried to bite me, of course I was covered by my shield the entire time. When it got boring, my father killed it. They taste amazing by the way." Jason said.
"Well that sounds fun, what did the mutant look like?" Xenon asked.
"Like a large cat that had had too much to drink."
"Huh, nice."
"Yeah, my father said he has seen a specter once while travelling between Ruach and Pritulok. He couldn't kill it though and just chased it away because he was transporting goods." Jason recounted.
"What did that one look like?" Xenon asked.
"A large moving bunch of tangled hair with a purplish aura around it."
"Huh, nice."
"Hey guys!" Rogue approached the duo from the opposite side and called out.
"Hey." Xenon replied.
"What do you want?" Jason asked.
"I see your cut healed up well, Xenon." Rogue said and Xenon nodded. "Would you both follow me, there is somewhere we need to be."
